Crown of femurs? How?

lunarul ,

Ah, didn't think of them being vertical. A very tall and heavy crown, but doable.

lunarul ,

Why remake movies that are already good?

lunarul ,

I was confused why a package manager would need to import posts from a social network.

Why name a new product the same as a very popular existing product?

lunarul ,

Most people don't like a paragraph worth of information being stretched out into a 14 minute video. Luckily someone already provided the info in another comment.

  • RPAN (actual subreddit name is R/PAN but they messed up the word mark for the registration I think.)

They didn't mess up, it was called RPAN from the start. And that's something Reddit launched, so it makes sense they'd trademark it.

lunarul ,

On one had, responding like that is definitely a sign that it's not going to work. On the other hand, that's a perfectly normal feeling for a person who doesn't live their life on the internet.

lunarul ,

I just did that last week for my son (he found it in a science book). The dish soap and water slowly mixed together into a single layer.

lunarul ,

Our version only had 5 layers:

  • honey
  • milk
  • dish soap
  • water
  • vegetable oil

The jar stayed out for a week before we finally cleaned it up and in that time only the dish soap and water mixed (which happened within the first hour)

With the introduction of AJAX, web pages became apps. It was the advent of SPAs and SASS. Which enabled the things you saw as a consumer.

kill way less people

I believe the danger axis is about danger to the passengers, not others

Yes, sometimes I see something that looks interesting and click to learn more. But I think more often than not I'll just open an incognito window and search for it instead of clicking on the ad.

it doesn't just have to be grape wine either

People in my country make hard spirits out of various fruits, but mostly plums, and in English those are being translated as fruit brandy.

Although if you want to make cognac (a type of brandy), it has to be grape wine.

Cognac, like Champagne, is about where it's made, not just the recipe. I has to be made out of specific varieties of grapes harvested and fermented in the Cognac area in France. You can import the same grapes and follow the same recipe, but you're not allowed to name it Cognac if you made it outside that area.

I'm going to venture a guess and say it's grams of CO2e per passenger over 1km

See Rich Cook's Wizardry series. It's about software engineers transported to a fantasy world and they start approaching magic as software. They create complex spells out of lots of smaller spells, they even create a debugger demon.

Fun fact: orcas are not whales. The name "killer whale" is a reversal of their previous name, "whale killers". They're just mean dolphins.

here in Ur

Wow, I never really thought about how long Ur has stood. The city was already 2000 years old in 1750 BCE

How do you store your grounded coffee? ( slrpnk.net )

Hiya, just quickly wondering how people store their coffee? Mine is in a tin box I got second hand, cos I thought it looked nice. Any rules regarding storing grounded coffee? I don't store much at the time, it's just if I grind a little too much and what not. I'm assuming the general thumb rule for this is to store it in a...

lunarul ,

I have a similar grinder, paid less than $20 for it, works great. I've been using it daily since 2019.

Unfortunately it's not on Amazon anymore. I found it on eBay, but with a single 1 star review: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124212737537

I thought flags were made of non-flammable materials to prevent people from burning them.

Someone: does something good.

Always that one person: but why not do another good thing instead?

lunarul ,

They also count one vote as one vote instead of this electoral college BS

I am confused. I'd think something experienced "as pure Logos" is the easiest to verbalize. And why is the image representing it as fractal imagery?

lunarul ,

I remember when it hit 6 billion. It's wild that population was below 5bil when I was born and its over 8bil now. Barring any catastrophic events (either personal or global), I'll be seeing world population double within my lifetime.

lunarul ,

OP probably meant "perspective", not literally "angle".

lunarul ,

The way I recall it seeing thing unfold and not really following the political stuff at the time:

CDC said that cloth masks don't stop viruses. You need a medical mask for that, but please don't use those because hospitals need them. That was all true.

In other countries, notably South Korea, almost everyone wore masks, and the numbers showed their effectiveness.

So CDC realized that indeed, if everyone wears one, it greatly reduces transmission of the virus. It doesn't have to be perfect to be efficient.

I always imagined early hominids were just like us. Some were smarter, some less so. One of them might have a brilliant idea and invent some stuff like that adhesive, teaches his group about it. The only difference today is the spread of information. It's not that we're smarter, it's that we've hugely improved our ability to share knowledge.

lunarul ,

I remember seeing the first Johnny Bravo episode when it aired. It was a segment called Cartoon Cartoons (cartoons made by Cartoon Network) where they ran various pilots to see what went well with the public. So it was basically the viewers who decided what will be made into a full show. Dexter's Laboratory also started there, Powerpuff Girls too. There was also a pilot for what later became Family Guy.

Christians literally go door to door trying to covert people.

That's the problematic statement. You use the word "Christians" to refer to certain American denominations that represent a small fraction of Christians globally. The funny thing is, those denominations were seen by most people in my native country (about 90% Christian population when I was growing up) as heretic sects that should be avoided. I believe that was (and probably still is) the case for most Orthodox or Catholic Christians (who are the vast majority of Christians outside of the US).

You mean a garbage disposal unit (insinkerator is just one brand). I've never seen those in the side sink, I've only had them in the main one.

lunarul ,

You can get fruit out of season, but they're definitely not fresh.

lunarul , (edited )

It is. Slack and Discord didn't kill forums, Reddit did. Because Reddit is a mega-forum. Instead of creating a specialized forum somewhere on a website you need to maintain, it's easier to just create a subreddit. Bam, new forum!

And we're discussing the disappearance of forums on a forum...

Wtf are you on? I grew up in a European city. I never got a driver's license or even learned to ride a bike. Everything was within walking distance of my home or of a subway station. Lived like that for almost 30 years. Only when I moved to the US in a suburb I had to get a car because nothing was within reach.

Polish Hackers Repaired Trains the Manufacturer Artificially Bricked. Now The Train Company Is Threatening Them ( www.404media.co )

The situation is a heavy machinery example of something that happens across most categories of electronics, from phones, laptops, health devices, and wearables to tractors and, apparently, trains. In this case, NEWAG, the manufacturer of the Impuls family of trains, put code in the train’s control systems that prevented them...

No, that shouldn't be illegal either. Against the rules of a server and getting you kicked out of that server, sure.

Before I noticed what community this was in, I didn't even realize this was a jab at electric cars. I though the poster was talking about how abandoning electric cars would be the mistake we shouldn't repeat.

College professors are going back to paper exams and handwritten essays to fight students using ChatGPT ( www.businessinsider.com )

College professors are going back to paper exams and handwritten essays to fight students using ChatGPT::The growing number of students using the AI program ChatGPT as a shortcut in their coursework has led some college professors to reconsider their lesson plans for the upcoming fall semester.

lunarul ,

AI is a tool that can indeed be of great benefit when used properly. But using it without comprehending and verifying the source material can be downright dangerous (like those lawyers citing fake cases). The point of the essay/exam is to test comprehension of the material.

Using AI at this point is like using a typewriter in a calligraphy test, or autocorrect in a spelling and grammar test.

Although asking for handwritten essays does nothing to combat use of AI. You can still generate content and then transcribe it by hand.
