Accused adulterer Trump who paid to keep Stormy Daniels affair secret professes ‘love’ for the Ten Commandments ( www.independent.co.uk )

“I LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER. READ IT — HOW CAN WE, AS A NATION, GO WRONG??? THIS MAY BE, IN FACT, THE FIRST MAJOR STEP IN THE REVIVAL OF RELIGION, WHICH IS DESPERATELY NEEDED, IN OUR COUNTRY. BRING BACK TTC!!! MAGA2024,” Trump wrote in the early...

Why should faith be respected?

aphlamingphoenix ,

First, I didn't say the people shouldn't be respected. I said faith shouldn't be. It's the worst, least reliable way to draw conclusions about the world. A method that only ever produces falsehoods is not respectable. Why should I respect it?

I am bisexual and somewhat poly. With some of my friends I have a more publicly physical/intimate relationship. We may hold hands, hug, or kiss. In private, we cuddle and... do other things as well. I imagine the straights of Lemmy will largely tell you they don't cuddle their male friends while the queer folk will give a different answer.

aphlamingphoenix ,

Why is this a survey? A survey is a tool used to approximate the distribution of opinions held among a population. What this survey is attempting to measure is a detectable fact, though. It would be more appropriate to do a statistical analysis of actual grocery costs over time.

Back in the day, the plant cannabis was referred to as "marihuana" to associate its use with Mexicans, who were (are?) often maligned as migrants, itinerants, etc. Those people could then be made the subject of racist laws and wind up arrested or deported.

This article goes into a couple explanations and offers a different one that's maybe less racist. https://www.sacurrent.com/cannabis/why-some-people-believe-marijuana-is-a-racist-word-and-why-it-doesnt-offend-me-31654627

Biden needs campaign ads calling Trump out for passing unconstitutional anti-gun legislation.

Tori Amos's Silent All These Years. That mercurial little piano riff. The painful lyrics. The liberation of the middle eight. It's a perfect song.

Didn't legalization in Colorado lead to less youth usage?

aphlamingphoenix ,

I get it. I love the slow pace, the beautiful cinematography, the careful dialog. But it's not for everyone.

aphlamingphoenix ,

The sequel was worse: a hackneyed "elements" magic system and a plot that would only work on a much longer time scale. Too much stuff crammed into too little movie.

"Filmed on a canoe" is how I put it.

Gavin McInnes stuck a plug up his ass to own the libs. Anytime you think you're inventing something so ridiculous the right can't possibly have done it, you're probably wrong.

Do you use both a personal desktop and laptop?

I'm moreso curious if laptop functions have been offloaded to phones. If you have a full gaming desktop, do you see the use case for an additional laptop? or if most people here don't see the need for the increased processing power of a desktop, do you just use your laptop and a phone?...

aphlamingphoenix ,

Primarily use my desktop (nothing beats a proper desk setup for Getting Shit Done) for work and gaming. I have a laptop that I use less frequently, but it's an acceptable way to take work with me if I have to. It won't play any games more graphically intense than Slay the Spire, but that's not the point. I use my phone for Serious Business only when absolutely necessary. Anything short of a proper desktop setup feels like a crippled user experience, and phones are the most crippled experience of them all.

My neighbors just put out a couple little pride flags. I should do the same.

I don't know the legal standard to which such a decision would be held, but it seems like it's pretty justifiable at this point.

Eligible. Just barely. No word on whether it actually was or not.

I'm neither young nor a racial minority, but I fully understand the position of not consenting to genocide. Is this really that hard for people? What is the argument in favor of supporting Israel? I mean, I know the state is doing a capitalism, but what's the argument to an average Joe?

aphlamingphoenix ,

Modest Mouse called this out in their song Novocain Stain back in '97 or whenever.

Interchanges, plazas and malls
And crowded chain restaurants
More housing developments go up
Named after the things they replace
So welcome to Minnow Brook
And welcome to Shady Space
Well it all seems a little abrupt
No, I don't like this change of pace

aphlamingphoenix ,

Kind of both? I'm becoming more cynical, but my cynicism does tend to be fairly predictive. I am getting better at taking it in stride, though, and I try to be more laid back.

aphlamingphoenix ,

I mean... Leviticus through Deuteronomy is one long string of genocides that were committed by Israelites and justified by "God said to." There's even a story in there where the Israelites don't want to commit yet another genocide because the army they're up against is bigger and stronger, and God tells them basically, "If you don't go do that genocide I'll kill you where you stand." This brutality seems expected in that context.

There are places like this or the Castro district in San Francisco that attract queer people and have large queer populations.

Biden challenges Trump to 2 debates but won’t participate in nonpartisan commission's debates ( apnews.com )

Biden’s campaign proposed that the first debate between the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees be held in late June and the second in September before early voting begins. Trump responded to the letter in an interview with Fox News digital, calling the proposed dates “fully acceptable to me” and joked about...

I worry that not doing debates for this cycle would be the start of a tradition of not doing them anymore, ever. To some degree, I'm in favor of doing them even knowing they're only ceremonial.

But even as I write that out, I wonder if the whole thing needs a facelift. This kind of televised debate was made up in a world where television had the broadest media reach. It was a public service to broadcast debates, and there was a time when that might make up the majority of what a voter knew about the candidates.

Now we have the Internet and no need to shoehorn a Very Formal Debate into a prime time slot. Debates could be shorter and focused on the details of particular issues, allowing the candidates to converse more directly on topics. I would listen to a whole year of weekly podcast episodes like that leading up to an election.

Time is up for neoliberals | Democracy requires a new, progressive capitalism. ( www.washingtonpost.com )

We care about freedom from hunger, unemployment and poverty — and, as FDR emphasized, freedom from fear. People with just enough to get by don’t have freedom — they do what they must to survive. And we need to focus on giving more people the freedom to live up to their potential, to flourish and to be creative. An agenda...

anti-Jesus

You might say the Jesus character in the Bible is a projection of the Yahweh character's internal need to excuse his own horrendous behavior in the same way that Trump excuses his base's behaviors.

He's gonna die sooner than later. While I don't disagree that the evangelical fascist movement will continue, they sure have latched onto Trump hard. Who's your bet for his eventual replacement? Has to be someone with a big media reach with a history of pandering hard to that audience. No need to be qualified for the position. Alex Jones, maybe? Or is he old news/dead meat at this point?

aphlamingphoenix ,

And also we would want to kick out people who would complain about having to give back to the society they profit so much from.

Trumpism Is Emptying Churches: The former president’s embrace of White Christian militantism coincides with a precipitous decline in religious affiliation in the US ( www.bloomberg.com )

Donald Trump, a 77-year-old Bible salesman from Palm Beach, Florida, has emerged as the nation’s most prominent Christian leader. Trump is running for president as a divinely chosen champion of White Christians, promising to sanctify their grievances, destroy their perceived enemies, bolster their social status, and grant...

Two protestors who were chanting were taken away in handcuffs, according to The Bloomingtonian. Authorities haven’t said whether they will face charges.

What charges? For chanting? Isn't chanting free speech? Were they creating a blockade? Were they causing harm to someone? Or just vocalizing dissent?

For real, get high and go to a glow in the dark mini golf course. There's one in every failing mall in the USA.
