So it depends. For example some legacy apple stuff had a bad DHCP implementation where it would try to hold onto an IP address it had before.

When there's one DHCP server with a reserved ip it won't assign that ip to the wrong device. (Unless you're running some buggy software that takes your configuration as suggestions)

Where the advice to set it anyways comes from scenarios where that DHCP server goes down for long enough that everyone starts self assigning addresses. It's a real hassle to find the correct system when that happens.

Keep in mind sdcards have short lifespans. If it's been a considerable amount of time it could be close to failure.

It's been working all day for myself. Maybe the change hasn't been pushed universally yet.

Try using strict mode in firefox for the privacy settings and confirm there isn't any DNS shenanigans or malware injecting ads.

You can use a hex editor to view those files and even change them in some cases.

Hey careful there, the iPhone 6s and newer still receive security updates. Just not feature updates on the really old models.

https://endoflife.date/iphone

Toes ,
@Toes@ani.social avatar

The reason is simply the developer has failed to understand that iOS 15 is still supported by Apple.

It's not hard to target the older models, with iOS it's mostly just a few small tweaks.

I'm wondering if it's blight or root rot.

Does the earth have a pungent or sweet smell about it?

I'm assuming you've been watering it, potentially extra after this started? Too much water can be just as bad as too little water.

Are you familiar with the paperclip problem?

The idea that if you task a sufficiently advanced AI with making paperclips it'll inevitably turn the universe into a collection of paperclips when that is its only goal.

Where to put a smartphone if you move fast and need it always at hand?

As I always move fast I have a problem with feeling like I loosely strapped a brick onto myself when I put my phone in my pockets, including waist and knee ones. It chaotically moves at each step and I'm tired of that. To the point I take it in my hand when I'm in a real hurry....

@Toes@ani.social avatar

My outfits tend to have small pockets, my phone fits snugly with absolutely no room for anything else.

So maybe you just need smaller pockets or a watch phone thingy.

With the current economic model I suspect that to be unaffordable by most of the world governments. The cost of ownership, the initial demand on production, temporary workers, etc.

It may be more realistic to retrofit existing infrastructure such as vacant office buildings into a space capable of comfortably providing for people that rely on electricity to survive.

Music industry’s 1990s hard drives, like all HDDs, are dying ( arstechnica.com )

My father told me he wanted to make USB flash drives of all the scanned and digitized family photos and other assorted letters and mementos. He planned to distribute them to all family members hoping that at least one set would survive. When I explained that they ought to be recipes to new media every N number of years or risk...

Toes ,

Yeah if you're looking for long term it needs to be archival media. Many people think the flash drive will hold it forever but they are potentially the most fickle.

Betrayal at House on the Hill

Great board game for 3+ people. Best with a full crew. You and your mates explore a mansion. As you explore a new room you place a tile and something can happen.

It's meant to have a lot of replayability as each time you play there's a booklet full of potential end games that you can trigger. Such as the mansion is burning down and you need to escape.

Chat GPT appears to hallucinate or outright lie about everything

As an analytics engineer, I've used basically every major variation of web-based AI there is. Claude, Gemini, Microsoft copilot, Chat GPT. Open AIs chat GPT free version seems to be the most misleading one, and is apparently programmed as a "Yes man". When you ask it questions, it'll provide you a generic answer, and if you...

USB C Gigabit ethernet adapters wont work in Windows 10 unless I boot into a Linux distro first?

First off, if there is a better place or forum to ask this, I will take suggestions. I haven't gone to any Linux forums because most of the ones I looked at did not want to support anything specifically Windows related, and this is primarily an issue in Windows....

Toes ,
@Toes@ani.social avatar

If I had to guess you're experiencing a bug with the firmware of your board or a driver issue. (check for bios and driver updates on the manufacturers page before proceeding)

Somewhere in your bios you should be able to control the USB ports.

Try looking for something along the lines of xHCI handoff and try toggling the options to see if that resolves it.

The other commentor made a good point. It sounds like defective software for the dock. They are thinking if you disable the power management features you might be able to get it to fire up. Does the gigabit adapter show up at all in device manager?

Toes ,
@Toes@ani.social avatar

Are you able to use an additional hub between the USBC port and dock? I'm wondering if that additional nested hub might bypass the issue at hand.

NetBSD (i386) should run fine on that box.

I'm curious how well CDDA (you may need to compile it from source) runs on that.

If you need a hand with anything this era of computers was what I learned on. So feel free to msg me.

Toes ,
@Toes@ani.social avatar

Oh the serial idea sounds like fun. You would need a null modem cable for that. A regular non-crossover serial cable typically won't work.

You could use ZMODEM for that.

There are adapters out there to connect some floppy drives to a modern computer but they tend to be expensive or difficult.

Alternately, you could just copy the large floppies to the smaller kind. Then use a more common usb floppy drive for that.

If you could get a ISA ethernet card into that box, you could setup networking and transfer that way.

Toes ,
@Toes@ani.social avatar

Yeah, sounds like a plan. The zmodem protocol was designed for this if you wanna save writing your own tool from scratch?

Be sure to check the hash of the files before and after. You could also zip them before transmission for that functionality.

What would you do/how screwed would you be if you woke up in the last game you played?

The Last game I played was Splatoon 3. It really depends on a few things, Am I an Inkling/Octoling? Do I speak the language? Where am I? In Splatoon lore all humans died in mass floods, so if I was still human I would probably be studied. Also, if I'm in the middle of the ocean I would be screwed either way. Assuming that I am...

    I'd suggest broadening your scope.

    There's lots of nerdy ladies out there, but you're most likely to meet people at conventions and other hobby events. If you're near NYC that will likely be where to go for that stuff.

    You could also explore online forums and support groups on discord. But please understand that these places are not intended for you to seek out women but to meet like minded individuals. Continue to respect the community and people's boundaries.

    You could further your education and try to meet people at college.

    Avoiding spam filters and ISP blocks are a common issue with self hosted email.

    Ideally you'll have a mature domain, dkim configured and an IP that's not blacklisted on a network that allows email traffic.

    OVH offers pretty cheap email hosting if you just want a turn key solution.

    Otherwise if you want your home lab to work this way you may need to configure something akin to a forward proxy on a VPS to act as a gateway for your homelab.

    This could be achieved using wireguard and iptables. By routing the email traffic to your homelab.
