👇🏼Via Rupar:

President Obama on the stakes of 2024: "What we're seeing now is a byproduct of 2016 where a whole bunch of folks, for whatever reason, sat out. They said, 'well, we're not enthusiastic, we're not feeling inspired, why bother'. And hopefully, we have learned our lesson. Because these elections matter in very concrete ways and we are now seeing how much it matters when it comes to the Supreme Court."

The "something for nothing" magical economic system,...

... where no one contributes and yet military defense, schools, roads, research, airports, ports, magically appear.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Npars01 @GottaLaff The funny thing is how often I hear that line from people who work for the government (police, fire) and whose salaries and generous retirement are DIRECTLY FUNDED BY THOSE TAXES. 🤷

WmShakesp3are ,
@WmShakesp3are@mastodon.social avatar

@Npars01 yeah, but rich people don’t need those kinds of services so why should they pay more? 😳🙄

@ai6yr @GottaLaff

Npars01 , (edited )
@Npars01@mstdn.social avatar

@WmShakesp3are @ai6yr @GottaLaff

The rich do use those services.

For example, Elon Musk often uses airports for his private jet.

Charles Koch & Tim Dunn help fry the planet by using ports to export fossil fuel products to China.

Steven Schwarzman & Miriam Adelson rely on a publicly educated labor force to operate their businesses.

Erik Prince profits from his warmongering by getting taxpayer funded defense contracts.

The argument that funding the common good is like ...

1/2

Npars01 ,
@Npars01@mstdn.social avatar

2/2

...watering your neighbors' garden.

It's the ideology of selfish shortsightedness.

"What do you get out of that?"

It's the same rationale used in India to justify not educating girls to read & write.

You fund public education because you don't want grandkids who can't read. You want them to have the best chance of success possible .

@Npars01 @GottaLaff I think highlighting this and the fact the IRS is now going after them, along with all the anti-trust cases going after massive corporations would be the thing to highlight or the DOJ findings against the Phoenix PD…
Hopefully the campaign will fire this up after a bit

@GottaLaff yes but as long as the Senate remains a toss up the ability to confirm SCOTUS judges is in jeopardy regardless whether or not a Dem is elected president thanks to McConnell's precedent of stonewalling confirmations. Founders never calculated for corruption on the GOP scale

@GottaLaff in 2016, the Democrats ran a thoroughly uninspiring candidate against a populist, lost, and blamed the public.

Now they're doing it again with someone even less popular while he unapologetically supports a genocide, and they're already blaming the public for their failures.

Kinda makes you wonder if the two-party system is really meant to represent choice at all.

@GottaLaff I do want to see Obama call out Dems who didn't commit to codifying reproductive rights and voting rights when we had the opportunity.

Even if we didn't get it done prior to 2022, Dems should have gotten caught trying.

It's never a fool's errand if voters would see the messaging that we're not the ones who are holding back progress on abortion rights, voting rights, student loan forgiveness, income inequality.

We're not republican-lite, we're Democrats and we need to act like it.

etherdiver ,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@Badger_AF @GottaLaff Actual image of Obama calling out Dems for not codifying voting and reproductive rights when they had the chance.

He actively chose not to do that exact thing when he had 60 seats in the Senate and a mandate for change.

CurtAdams ,
@CurtAdams@urbanists.social avatar

@etherdiver @Badger_AF @GottaLaff Obama never had 60 seats for that. There were only 60 Democratic seats for about 50 days, and it included several abortion opponents like Ben Nelson.

@GottaLaff yup! Some people believe that the Constitution and federal rules are the law of the land and they quote Article 4 Section 2. Such as Thomas Hartmann on Substack. That’s not my read, but be that as it may, in my opinion the Untouchables have become the Supreme Law of the Land with their bump stock ruling!

@GottaLaff He is aware he’s part of the problem right? Many people voted for him because he promised to bring positive changes, only for his policies to be more or less a continuation of Bush’s. Right down to droning people in the ME, allowing monopolies to expand and throwing out immigrants.

Many of us learned our lessons about letting republicans seize power, yet the democrats should look inward if they want to know why people are unenthusiastic about voting for them.

black_flag ,
@black_flag@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff Did Obama have anything to say on what politicians should be doing to inspire a desire to join in?

No, I expect not. He just expected us to rubber stamp the more of the same thats killing us all anyway.

Before the step of people hearing them, the media would have to give them a lot of coverage.

That's the biggest tripping point, really. 😒 We got nonstop coverage of Fucking Emails in 2016 that led directly to this.
