Can't say anything about privacy because I haven't used their stuff enough, however I have an iPad from 2013 in perfect state that it useless because I can't install anything on it.

I think most of us like the generic communities as it means they are well cared for/moderated

Welcome!

My first instance here on Lemmy was Kbin too but I created a new account on Beehaw as soon as I learned about it.

Kbin was ok for me, the only thing I actually liked a lot was the chat tab or something that magazines had. At the time the UI there felt very frustrating for me.

I like how the administration care about the community and I think from all the others you can actually care about your instance instead of just using it as means to access other content.

Just keep in mind that Beehaw might not be here in the long-term as there's a plan to migrate away from Lemmy. I don't think there's a set day to happen but it will, eventually.

If this means that I might be able to use NFC payments because alternatives to Google Pay will exist, I am very happy. Hopefully this will also make possible to F-droid to provide auto updates.

I'm confused why you would assume that there isn't any context where someone might need to store their cards on their phone instead of carrying a wallet. Have you considering asking why instead of assuming everyone is like you? Is amazing when you get to know other perspectives.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

Yes I realized that, the one that doesn't is Aurora I think

It seems many banks/providers used to had this functionality and just stopped maintaining in favor of Google/Apple Pay.

Hopefully they decide to do it again.

I see you are heading down for some fun, OP. This is just the invitation.

Did you manage to get a position? How was it?

I applied to one job opening and already want to give up

Thank you! Appreciate the message, sometimes I need to remember this

Stremio is a parasite. They are "legal" because the app itself doesn't contain anything illegal, you have to add the plugins on the side. It is just awful because it just leeches from torrents and don't seed anything.

We're just self hosting our stuff and using Jellyseer, it's convenient and we can just forget stuff seeding as long as we can

Templa OP ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I should probably learn with you and start blocking people, but I don't see many things that trigger the need being on Beehaw

Templa OP ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I dislike that there isn't another option like "don't show me this on the front page" or something. Blocking sounds too strong for me, haha

I love how you organized your message, it helps my ADHD brain read haha

Is there a federated/non-profit alternative to Stack Overflow?

Considering how SO is killing itself rather quickly, it would be interesting to have a platform with similar structure but taking users interests instead of profit of executives. I am not saying their system is perfect, I have made a post in the past on their meta community regarding how hard it is for new contributors to start....

Templa OP ,

Discourse is fine, thank you for sharing! I visit a few forums on Discourse but I didn't know there are so many communities forming using it.

I dislike very much the quantity of AI art used on this. It makes overwhelming to look at lol

How can you read so much 💀 I'm envious! Does comics count?

Templa ,

In the perfect world where you can convince your company to use anything other than MS Teams and that your family bothers to use anything that isn't WhatsApp or Telegram. Unfortunately I don't live on it 😭

Templa ,

This is cool. I switched from Winamp to Foobar2000 at some point, I don't really remember the reason.

Does anyone know of a FOSS Firewall for Windows

I currently use TinyWall Firewall, it works very well, it's small/portable, no complaints I even donated to the Dev but I would really prefer open source, also it needs to be user friendly like TinyWall so my non-tech family members can/will use it like they do with TinyWall.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I knew I was going to find a comment like this and I am disappointed that I did.

It is hard for people to make transitions specially because they probably used Windows their own life. If they are asking for a FOSS firewall they most likely know they should transition to Linux at some point. There is actually no need to be the questioning person.

I use arch btw

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

If you phrased your initial question differently or asked more details about OP's use case I think it would be completely fine. For example, they might be the "sys admin" where they live but their family members would be extremely annoyed if they tried to push Linux.

Just kind tired of the "you cannot ask for FOSS alternatives if you are using something proprietary" and ended up venting because of your comment, that's all.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

This is Beehaw and we aim to be a nice place, right? So to me is kind of pointless this kind of discussions and I just meant to say that your comment sounded very judgemental and it could be written in a nicer way, that's all.

Edit: Check OP's new comment on the post.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

Sorry you had to write this down, OP. On the internet people make a lot of assumptions. I hope you ended up getting a reply.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I'm never said you were violating any rules, I was just expressing my opinion. If a person asks a question you can decide if you are going to be helpful and answer that question or make an statement regarding the irony of their question, which isn't helpful at all.

You keep doing whatever you think it is best.

The only reason I stopped using my iPod was because I lost it. 🥲

It was my companion for many many years, I think I lost it in 2016 or something. I recently started considering getting another one, but I honestly wouldn't like having to install iTunes just for it.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I completely forgot about that! I used foobar2000 a lot back in the day, but never managed how to manage my iPod through it, it was just my main music player.

Is there a market for modified iPods? I'd love to get one already modified with the flash storage you mentioned

I think it is weird they didn't say anything before, considering Dorsey deleted his account 8 months ago.

Drip - Keeping track of menstrual cycles (If you have it lol)
Tempo - Music client for navidrome
Clima - Weather app
Telegram FOSS - Alternative to the proprietary client
Aegis Authenticator - 2FA app

It was fine but now I feel awful since I destroyed my desktop motherboard

I accidentally scratched its back in a way that ruined it while trying to remove the cpu cooler

Where/how to efficiently download music in bulk?

I have a relatively large collection of songs I downloaded from YouTube, one-by-one, on my Android phone. I would like to download a lot more of the songs I like, with correct metadata and without having to manually edit the album cover art, artist, and more, on my Windows PC....

I think DS Lite is the best one (apparently it can only run GBA games natively tho, which is a shame imo)

We installed an IPS screen in one of our GBCs and now I want to mod my GBA SP soon. The shell looks awful and its display is one of those that's completely washed out. It will need a substantial investment so I am delaying it.

I don't really like to explain stuff to other people because I often repeat myself too much and I don't like to evangelize/lecture people. However, when I have to explain why I do things certain way it is usually about the following:

  • FOSS + self hosting
  • Retro console moding
  • Mechanical Keyboards
  • Board games
  • Using the steam deck as a computer/emulation station
  • Vegetarianism / Plant based recipes

We usually make chili using Impossible ground meat. If you are okay with that I do have a recipe if you are interested!
