I live an work in Scotland, as part of our job we're voluntold to speak to young people considering a trades apprenticeship. Last month was my turn, one of the kids was going for his welding ticket. His game plan was to immediately move to Texas. I told him there's loads of places you'd be less likely to be shot considering how lippy he is.

Scotland is oil country sadly. A lot of the money that comes into small communities is from people going off to work the rigs. So I'm positive that that's something they'd be taught.

I was within 8 meters of someone dying twice, the second time I was less than 2 meters away.

The first was a truck driver with a load of cast iron pipes. Truck was on a slight angle, and when he undid the straps the load fell on him.

Second time was a load of stone going up a scaffold on a hoist, it hadn't been secured properly and a guy cut through the exclusion zone and this 100kg stone window cill just...yeah. There wasn't really a lot left of the top third of him.

I've had a lot of therapy about these and I still dream about the second one.

So I grew up in Canada, on the west coast, basically Vancouver. So I'm well aware of the dog-whistles. I now live in Scotland. There was an event where I work recently, and the event contractors were 88 Events. And immediately I was like: FUCKIN NAZIS!

My wife seems to think that they're too...idk...girly? to be nazis, but where the fuck did 88 come from, they started up in 97, so couldn't be that. I feel like I'm being fuckin paranoid, but the fascy bastards are coming out the woodworks lately...shrugs

But don't take this as something to freak out about. Keep an open dialogue with your kids, the best way to make sure they don't turn into a racist, fascist or criminal...is to be as big a part of their life as you can without trying to control them. Talk to them about especially the history of racism in Canada, the concerted effort to wipe out First Nations identity and people, and bring them to as many different cultural events as you can. These movements thrive on the Us and Them mentality, if you can teach them that we're all just people, that our similarities outweigh our differences, and that we're culturally healthier with many different people... Well, that'll go a long way.

It's certainly never went away the many times I flew out of many UK airports. I've not flown out of all of them, but the ones I have flown from definitely had the 100ml limit
