Sephiroth. His look is basically the most generic bishy anime character you can make, his entire backstory can be boiled down to "mommy issues" and his motivations are the standard villain "destroy world/become god". He's just so bland.

High altitude northern California. It's snow and ice during the winter, high and dry desert during the summer and alternates during the spring and fall. This May it went from 80 degree weather to freezing at night in the space of two days and then back again in the same span. Also, my yard is subsoil fill, I've been gardening for years and my garden bed soil is only just getting to marginal.

There's been research that language shapes how we perceive the world around us. Because there was no word for "blue" there was no concept of blue, the color still existed but their brains just lumped it into "green". Sight works by the visual centers brain taking data from the eyes, throwing most of it out, then building a model which is what the rest of the brain gets to actually "see". That's why optical illusions work.

A commonly cited source for language shaping our perception of color is Jules Davidoff's studies on the Himba tribe. The Himba have no word for blue, and they struggled to pick out the blue square from this color wheel. However, they do have many distinctions for shades of green so when given this color wheel they could easily pick out the square that's a different shade of green (and yes I opened it in MSpaint to check and one of the green squares is a different shade.)

Bunch of uneducated goons.

Oh, they know they're lying, they just want to lie so much they bury the truth re-write the past (which is kinda ironic if you think about it, given that whole eight commandment). It's kinda the same way the "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" is embedded into American mythology despite being a after-the-fact whitewashing of history.

"McDonalds discovers that text-to-speech hooked to a LLM is not magic like they were promised."

I mean that's what I'm assuming they were using. The term "AI" has become so trivialized it's hard to tell from the article what their "AI" solution actually was.

Sludgehammer ,

I view "reporting on the obvious" as being in the same vein as "a scientific report proving the obvious." Sure we all know it's true, but now there's actually documentation you can point too.

At least at one major auto maker, environmental and serious health concerns are outweighing its aesthetic appeal.

Suuurree they are. Hasn't chromium getting more expensive over the past couple years? I'm guessing this sudden concern about the environment and the health of the workers will save them quite a bit of money in the long term.

Still, credit where credit is due, at least this cost cutting measure that actually has positive benefits for once.

In 2010, shortly before the case was set to go to trial, the South Dakota legislature passed a law that prohibits victims of alleged sexual abuse who are 40 or older from suing institutions.

Why am I not surprised?

I still wear a face mask when out shopping... although really it's more about not breathing the dust flaking off the 400 pound man in pajamas that look like they haven't been washed since the Obama administration rather than blocking facial ID or reducing the spread of COVID.

After looking at the photo with the article, I have to say that I'm glad I live in a society where machines have taken over the burden of drawing dicks onto peoples faces.

I'm planning on growing some normal petunias first. Then once the price has come down a bit (and I have some experience keeping petunias alive and overwintering them indoors) I'll grab a Firefly plant.

I did however buy some of those new purple tomatoes. Hopefully they'll do well enough I'll be able to make some crosses I want to try (Early Girl and San Marzano).

Trump floats idea of three-term presidency at NRA convention ( www.theguardian.com )

Donald Trump flirted with the idea of being president for three terms – a clear violation of the US constitution – during a bombastic speech for the National Rifle Association in which he vowed to reverse gun safety measures green-lighted during the Biden administration....

Sludgehammer ,
@Sludgehammer@lemmy.world avatar

So let's see here, Trump is 77 years old, but will be 78 at the time of election. Let's just add eight years and we get 86... yep he's angling for president for life.

"Country threatens to kill civilians unless terrorists do as they say" Yeah, I'd say that's not gonna work, but the whole point of this ultimatum is to justify the slaughter of Palestinians.

In the long run it'll probably work out for Hamas too. Watching friends and family get murdered will probably radicalize a lot of folks and drive up recruitment.

The 67-year-old chair of the real estate company Van Thinh Phat was formally charged with fraud amounting to $12.5 billion — nearly 3% of the country’s 2022 GDP.

Wow, when your fraud starts being measured in "percentage of GDP" you know you got too greedy.

I was confused by your comment at first, then I got to this part in the article:

One of the partygoers called an ambulance, but when paramedics arrived they were refused entry and were only able to attend to the man after police were called, according to the reports.

I'm not sure what the legal term is, but that's nearing murder in my book.

So let's see:

Ivermectin: Relatively low toxicity de-wormer

Fenbendazole: Relatively low toxicity de-wormer. However, it was actually investigated as a possible chemotherapy drug... but didn't produce notable results.

Aprocot seeds: Contain cyanogenic glycosides

Soursop tea: Contains annonacin, a neurotoxin linked to Parkison's disease.

Chlorine dioxide: Fuck no. Bleach/sterilizing chemical.

Dandelion root tea: Not gonna cure your cancer, but apparently fine?

Frequency therapy: Run of the mill "healing with tones" quackery

Antineoplastons: Never heard of this one. Apparently a term made up by a quack cancer center for some chemicals he found in urine.

I also find it amusing that they're railing against chemotherapy drugs... while pushing a drug investigated as a chemotherapy drug as well as some quack compounds pushed as chemotherapy drugs. I guess it's only bad when they're mainstream, hipster "You wouldn't have heard of them they're too underground" chemotherapy drugs get a pass.

TIL The fish pepper was thought to be extinct for much of the 20th century until the rediscovery of fifty year-old seeds in a family's freezer ( www.bbc.com )

The fish pepper (named for its common use in seafood dishes) is popular today, but it nearly disappeared altogether: that it still exists is thanks to William Woys Weaver, a Maryland author and ethnographer. In 1995, Weaver discovered a jar of seeds in the bottom of a freezer that belonged to his grandfather, H Ralph Weaver....

It's interesting to consider how many distinctive breeds of plant just vanish.

One time when I was making hot sauce my mother started reminiscing about her grandmother would soak some tiny peppers in vinegar to make hotsauce. From the sounds of things it was some variety of tabasco pepper. But she had been growing and selecting these peppers for multiple decades and so they had probably grown into a distinct variety... and then she died and the variety was lost.

What the fuck kind of human author is publishing 3 BOOKS A DAY.

Just to play devils advocate, maybe there is a author out there who has a stockpile of unpublished books that he's publishing all at once. I mean it could happen.

What gets me though is that if they set the amount that high there had to have been people spamming AI "books" at a rate much greater than that.

Okay I know what to do from here.

First, reverse pickpocket poison apples into all of the guards inventories, then hang out in their barracks until they all eat poisoned apples, once the guards all die steal their stuff and sell it to the town merchants. Now not only are you richer, but the town's guards can't arrest you on account of being dead.

The best part is that when the guards eventually respawn they keep the poisoned status and will quickly die again, with a new loadout of guard equipment!

Bernie is the Ron Paul of the left; he has a small group of very loud supporters online who by constantly shouting at each other on the internet have convinced themselves that he's actually some sort of populist god. I mean seriously, he couldn't even win the popular vote in the Democratic Primary in 2016, losing to Hillery by over three million votes, where were all the extra voters to "whoop" Trump supposed to come from?
