    My brother said Apple News does this too— you have the optional ability to subscribe to newspapers using it, but the subscription only content shows up in your feed even if you don’t subscribe. They have an option to block particular publications from your feed as well so he tried that to omit the articles he couldn’t access, but instead of actually removing them it leaves a blank square in that space in your feed saying that you’ve blocked the content. IDK what they’re thinking.

    They shout out a stat from gallup I hadn’t seen— 43% of people gallup polled in 2023 identified as independent. Much higher than I thought.

    The main power company in CA (PG&E) has built tons of other things into the bills aside from power generation, so I expect my bill (which has gone up 300% since 2018) to continue to climb despite this.

    Never make important decisions when you’re depressed. You can’t think clearly in that state and you are only able to see the doom. It’s called tunnel vision and it makes you feel like there’s objectively no hope (which is rarely true). Instead you should take methodical steps to improve your situation. Pretend a friend is in your same situation and think about what you might do for them. Make warm tea. Watch media that’s gentle on you. Feel the warm sun. Focus on making sure you’re fueling your body with something. The money will be fine. 1k is not a lot of money and you can deal with it later if you can’t deal with it now. Credit scores can be repaired.

    You have to be that person for yourself. I find that when I am spiraling I have to put myself on a regimen. Eat at least twice even if it’s just crackers. Take a walk around the block. Watch some clouds or some tree branches or some water. My only job is to exist, for now. Nothing anyone thinks about me is important. Other things can wait. I’m not the only one in this situation. My depression is a valid reaction to the world but it is not permanent.

    To me if a certain method of organizing fails to give people power over their own needs without infringing on the needs of others than it should be avoided. Privatization of -everything-, which is core to ancap theory, is itself an aggression. The enclosure movement in the UK is a good example. The ‘best’ way for people to organize would incentivize people to be good towards each other and good stewards of the planet. It would not allow one person to gain power over anyone else’s right to exist. You should be highly skeptical of a movement whose theorists support slavery, free market organ sales, etc. which are antithetical to freedom of the individual (at least one person in the relationship is getting the shitty end of the deal).

    Related to bargaining, I read the wiki article on Iran’s nuclear program the other day and was surprised at how hard they are trying to do their nuclear program “by the book” while the US keeps blocking everyone else from agreeing that they’re entitled as long as they follow the guidelines (paris agreement etc).
