I can't speak for anyone else, but the supplements I take are primarily intended to improve the quality of my life, not quantity. For example, I take a B multivitamin because I find that my nails don't break quite so easily when I do.

QualifiedKitten ,

Username checks out!

I also frequently enjoy more alcohol than recommended, so it's good to know that my "expensive urine" may be serving more purposes than intended. Lol.

QualifiedKitten ,

I could be completely wrong, but my life experience so far suggests that the best way to get better at something is to put yourself into situations where you have to actually practice the skill. I've been fostering cats and kittens for a few years, and I think it has really pushed me to learn how to manage my emotions better.

Is Craigslist Dying?

I went to Craigslist in my local area for the first time in awhile. I used to like “best of” Craigslist because some of them were great, there still are some, but its just not the same. A community I used to visit had about half the number of posts as I remember, and of jobs and things for sale, I would say roughly half the...

QualifiedKitten ,

I still use Craigslist, but it does seem like fewer other people do. I've never really cared to get top dollar for whatever I list, I mostly just want to avoid tossing it in the garbage or hauling it to a donation drop off, and it's worked well for that. I'm currently browsing for a few items, and it does feel cluttered with dealers, even when supposedly limiting it for sale by owner only.

I tried Offer Up once a few years ago, and for some reason, it didn't notify me of any responses, so by the time I thought to check it again, I had already sold the item through CL. I refuse to use any Meta products, so FB Marketplace effectively doesn't exist to me.

I was actually looking this up the other day regarding ducks, and had trouble finding an actual answer. What's the difference between a breeding male, a non breeding male, and a juvenile male? They each look different, but why? Can an individual bird/duck go through phases of each? Somebody please info dump! Links greatly appreciated too!

QualifiedKitten ,

Awesome! There's a PDF referenced in there too that seems to go into a lot more detail about plumage and molt (40+ pages!), which I will have to read a bit later.

I've been seeing mallard ducks during my daily walks and have really been enjoying learning about them. They're seasonally monogamous, and this was an entertaining read about their mating habits: https://www.tyrantfarms.com/duck-mating/

Imagine a primary election with 5 candidates, 2 from Party A, 2 from Party B, and 1 from Party C, and these are the results of the primary:

  • Candidate 1 (A) 50 votes
  • Candidate 2 (A) 49 votes
  • Candidate 3 (B) 10 votes
  • Candidate 4 (B) 9 votes
  • Candidate 5 (C) 5 votes

Where I live, those results would mean that Candidate 1 and Candidate 2 move on to the general election, while the others are eliminated. To me, it sounds like you would instead see Candidate 1, Candidate 3, and maybe Candidate 5 move on to the general election.

I'm a big fan of blue cheese:

  • Water cracker, soft blue cheese, and a bit of hot (spicy) honey drizzled on top.
  • Ramen with blue cheese crumbles melted into the broth.
  • Avocado toast with blue cheese crumbles.

There's a link at the bottom labeled, "Our Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Program", and it was exactly what I expected.

Looks like it may be in Japan? The link in the article is not in English:

The team is recruiting for this Phase IIa trial now.

Why publishers are preparing to federate their sites - Digiday ( digiday.com )

The Verge and 404 Media are building out new functions that would allow them to distribute posts on their sites and on federated platforms – like Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky – at the same time. Replies to those posts on those platforms become comments on their sites.

QualifiedKitten ,

Any idea how things might be handled when things get crossposted? Will replies on the crossposted threads also become comments on their sites? Or only replies to the original post?

Is Biodegradable Plastic Really a Thing? Technically, it exists. But here’s what to think about when shopping. ( www.nytimes.com )

But there’s a big catch: Just because your plastic fork, cup or doggy poop bag is marketed as biodegradable, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll break down in the environment. The same goes for so-called compostable plastic.

QualifiedKitten ,

I have some supposedly compostable bags, but I can't seem to find anything on the package that tells me what type they are. Any clue how I might figure that out?

Looks like they've changed the packaging since I last ordered, but here's one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JHR635J

QualifiedKitten ,

That I really have absolutely zero interest in smelling their buttholes. Also, I sometimes eat plants.

Yeah, I guess I just might be a crazy cat person.

QualifiedKitten ,

I kinda sorta understood, but can anyone ELI5?

QualifiedKitten ,

Be mindful that ... air conditioning nullifies the effects for cavities.

Got any sources for that? My admittedly very brief search just turned up a bunch of stuff about ventilation and COVID/aerosols.

QualifiedKitten ,

I understand that air conditioning removes some moisture from the air, but just how much of an effect does it actually have on oral moisture? I was hoping to find some sort of studies with actual measurements of some sort.

QualifiedKitten ,

I foster and have 2 resident cats, so I do introductions a few times per year. I highly recommend Jackson Galaxy's guide. I've linked part 1, but there's 5 parts, the rest are linked within. It's worth reading the entire thing, because he does a great job of explaining why he recommends each step, which is helpful if you need to modify things a bit.

You need to figure out a room in your house that can be The Boy's basecamp. This is where The Boy is going to spend most of his time until Anya can tolerate him, and hopefully isn't a "high value" space for Anya. Without knowing either cat, I'd say you should plan for a minimum of 2 weeks of very carefully managing the process of introducing them to each other, and probably at least a month before things really settle in.

Also, make sure The Boy gets neutered ASAP, if he isn't already!

QualifiedKitten ,

Glad to hear things have settled down a bit! Feel free to ping me or PM me if you need to bounce any plans off a real person, particularly when it comes to modifying things to work with your situation and/or gauge when to move on to the next steps. I'll be keeping an eye out for your updates either way.

I absolutely can't stand minty or cinnamon toothpaste, and have really struggled with brushing my teeth because of it. It drives me absolutely insane that so many of the flavors I can tolerate are only available in fluoride free formulations and/or get discontinued.

QualifiedKitten ,

Ouch, that must really suck! I'm not dealing with actual physical pain here, just hate the minty fresh feeling in my mouth. Does mouthwash cause pain for you? I've never really used it, but briefly wondered if I could use a fluoride free toothpaste plus a fluoridated mouthwash, but I think I ran into the same issue with limited fluoridated flavors.

QualifiedKitten ,

Huh. I see quite a few cinnamon options online, but I wouldn't be surprised that it's harder to find in physical stores. They really seem to be cutting back on options everywhere lately. I found a brand that I like, so I just order a few tubes at a time from their website.

QualifiedKitten ,

I haven't tried it, but will keep it in mind. I'm currently using the Hello brand toothpastes. They seem to be a little less sweet than most other kids toothpastes, which is a big plus for me. I like their bubblegum and orange flavors best, and the blue raspberry isn't bad either. They have some other flavors without fluoride, so you have to pay attention though.

QualifiedKitten ,

Not even. Looking at the 2023 Q4 subscriber counts listed on Wikipedia that's about 500 million devices, so the total fine amounts to less than 50¢ per customer.

Someone please tell me I'm calculating that terribly wrong, because I'm feeling quite angry at such a meaningless penalty.

QualifiedKitten ,

Oh, I definitely got the South Park reference!

I just got curious about the math anyway, then very, very angry. Another source indicated something like 300 million people with cell phones in the country, but it wasn't clear how many of those are customers of the affected carriers.

I can't sit on the couch anymore without one (or both) of these goobers requesting a blanket fort. If they're desperate enough for a fix they'll even share ( programming.dev )

I would recommend everyone try this. Just sit down, bend your knees, throw a blanket over, and show them the entrance. Just be warned they will not leave unless you make them

QualifiedKitten ,

I have one of those perches that mounts on a window with suction cups, and sometimes I close the curtains over it. My cats absolutely love hanging out in the little "tent" it creates. They don't ever cuddle with each other, but I've caught them peacefully hanging out in the "tent" together.

QualifiedKitten ,

Sorry to go slightly off topic here, but do you have a male tortie?? Those are quite rare, because it requires 2 X chromosomes to produce the tortie coat.

QualifiedKitten ,

FYI, the catnip that comes with scratching toys is often pretty shit quality. If you really want to treat him to the nip, get some high quality stuff. From the Field and Yeowww! are two brands that seem to usually be pretty high quality, and silvervine is a related plant that may be even more potent for some cats.

https://yeowww.com/our-products/catnip/

QualifiedKitten ,

If you want to be extra safe, stick with stuff specifically intended for cats. My local pet store carries these small, cooked fish fillets that have only 1 ingredient.

https://applaws.com/us/products/salmon-filet-treat/

QualifiedKitten ,

Maybe you're thinking tabby? Brown tabbies are often referred to as the "standard issue cat", and are commonly found as both XX and XY cats. Torties are black/brown and orange, and their coloring is the result of having one X chromosome for black/brown, and a second one for orange.

My apologies, I just find their genetics so fascinating!

QualifiedKitten ,

Yup, just my random tangential anecdote here, but I consider myself very lucky to have a decently paid job that allows me to work from home. I started fostering kittens a few years ago and have found myself quite passionate about it. The problem is that it takes lots of time and a good bit of money and is unpaid. The organization I volunteer for covers medical expenses, but everything else is coming out of my own pocket. I guess they technically offer to cover food, but it's a lot of hassle (and frequent upset tummies and/or cats refusing to eat) to actually utilize their food supplies.

People have suggested that I get a job at the shelter or as a vet, so I could get paid to work with animals, but the work is totally different, likely pays less than my current job, and the in person nature of those jobs would severely limit my ability to continue fostering.

  • When listening to new music, I'm constantly recognizing how heavily they sample older songs that I remember listening to when I was a kid.

  • A night out with friends often ends at 9 or 10p because we're all tired.

  • A night out with friends often includes a lot of discussion of various health issues and encouraging each to see a doctor.

  • I'm finding myself more and more avoidant of new technology. Or maybe it's just that I'm getting more concerned about maintaining a little sliver of privacy?

QualifiedKitten ,

In your opinion, how should they be crediting it? I'm having trouble trying to imagine a good way that it could be credited within the song, and I can't imagine very many people actually pay attention to the credits for music, especially when so few of us are buying physical copies anymore.

I've definitely experienced feeling annoyed at the new songs, but some have grown on me, and hearing the samples often leads me to add the original to my playlist. I've actually been having a lot of fun trying to see if I can name the original artist & song title whenever a new one pops up.

QualifiedKitten ,

The bird pictured is very likely male. Male birds tend to be brightly colored, while females and juveniles are often "dull-colored", such as brown or grey.

All numerical dates are represented on a 12 hour clock.

Only if you use mmdd date format. The majority of the world uses ddmm.

QualifiedKitten ,

I'm so sorry! It's so tough when they just don't have the strength to pull through, even with all the support you can give them. If they don't make it, at least you know that you gave them their best chance at survival, and that they were able to experience love, instead of dying alone in the cold.

QualifiedKitten ,

How the heck does a plant that literally has the word "California" in its name become an invasive plant in California?

Edit: Ahh, looks like I misunderstood. I thought those were the AKA names, but they're actually suggested alternative plants.

QualifiedKitten ,

My team is currently hiring, and I got to listen in on the conversation with HR when they were developing the job posting. The job posting includes requirements that the team knows they are unlikely to find, especially finding all of them in a single candidate. The posting calls them requirements, but really it's more of a wish list. If you come across listings where you meet half of their requirements (wish list), and think you can learn some of the others, you should apply.

QualifiedKitten ,

Holy fuck no! That's not normal, and I can't possibly believe that's legal.

Note: my experience is based on living primarily in liberal cities in the US.

QualifiedKitten ,

I generally browse via kbin.social, with lemmy.world as my backup, but since Ernest has gone MIA, things have become quite laggy and the frequency of errors is getting to be too much, so I've been exploring other instances and apps. One of the key things I'm looking for is an alternative that provides keyword filtering, so I can block out the majority of posts on certain topics. The Thunder app has keyword filtering, so I've been using that for the past couple days, and I'm definitely enjoying myself more and engaging more.

I've had to block a lot of communities from my lemmy.world feed since they're in languages I don't understand or are porn (I don't want porn popping up while I'm killing time on the bus!), but it's like whack-a-mole, so I'm really looking forward to instance blocking!
