"is the world better off without me" checklist:

  1. Are you Adolf Hitler?
  2. If previous answer was no: Are you Joseph Stalin?
  3. If previous answer was no; The world is better with you.

Well, accepting boundaries wasn't exactly his strong suit, was it?

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Yes and no. It's a circular relationship. The proverb is known to have already existed in Ancient Greece. The pantheon (the version that existed before Xerxes torched the place) was apparently inhabited by tons of owls, especially it's roof construction. Since the pantheon was a temple to Athena, people assumed Athena held Owls holy and the owl became linked to Athena, and since Athena was the goddess of wisdom, Owls became a symbol of wisdom. Since the city and her patron goddess are related by name, Athens is linked to owls as well.

But for the meaning: It's to be taken literally. There were many owls in Athens, so they'd not exactly need any more.

You keep telling us about the 90s. The dish had been around for 30 years by then. Enough time for the idea to travel back to Turkey, don't you think?

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Because on Reddit (and here on Lemmy) people use up and downvotes exclusively to rate the quality of a post, not as a tool to show disapproval without having to be able to actually articulate why. I like when social interactions go exactly as intended - like in this case - and don't devolve into two people arguing with silent mobs behind them.

/s for everyone who's as blind to sarcasm as this shitty AI from Google.

And next you know, someone cites them and concludes that coffee cures cancer.... Or causes it when drunk at exactly or above 41.33456 degrees Celsius or when.you drink more than 4 but less than 3 daily. Or was that chocolate? No! Red wine! It was red wine!

Just out of curiosity: the article states finite amounts to pay each year. Do you Brits pay one sub or do you pay for consumption (eg per Liter)?

Wait till he learns that wasps are a protected species (at least in parts of Europe) and killing them is technically illegal.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Okay, I think we are running into a language problem here. A wasp is what you muricans call a Yellowjacket, what do you mean when you say wasp? A hornet? Something completely different?

No matter: both wasps and hornets are protected. Why would you cede territory? I mean, they can be aggressive but they won't like murder you. Anyway, if you got a nest of those bitches on your property, you call either a specialist who will relocate them or the fire department. They will do the same.

Just my subjective take, but you can add a "for women" after everything people like this say to better get the real meaning:

Carson, who is often mentioned as a potential Trump VP, writes in his new book that the U.S. should end no-fault divorce laws.

... for women

Why exactly are we giving Nazis the power to poison language, emojis, what have you for the rest of us again?

I think we should do the opposite. As soon as some symbol becomes a dog whistle, we should all rush to use it for it's original meaning as much as possible, thus preventing the dog from hearing the whistle where it's supposed to be used as such.

Wait; he was pissed that F5 wanted to treat something as a security issue where he “and the developers” (citation needed) wanted to treat it as a normal bug. So, the “evil corporate overlords” wanted to fix something via hotfix-release, while he wanted the fix to be shipped later with a regular release?

So the company wanted — just so I get this straight — to fix a thing sooner, and therefore they are evil. They wanted to provide something that benefited users sooner and… how exactly does that make them worthy of scorn? guys, help me out, what am I missing here?

Three women contract HIV from dirty “vampire facials” at unlicensed spa ( arstechnica.com )

Trendy, unproven "vampire facials" performed at an unlicensed spa in New Mexico left at least three women with HIV infections. This marks the first time that cosmetic procedures have been associated with an HIV outbreak, according to a detailed report of the outbreak investigation published today....

@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Well, I think this points more towards the rise of LLM driven spell checkers like Grammarly than to the rise of fraud with LLMs, apart from the blatantly obvious examples that are more telling about the culture in countries like China. If they are so lazy that they just spam out u edited ChatGPT output, how many of their "findings" were just made up over the years before that? This is like stealing. Most people don't start stealing jewelry, they start by shoplifting and become more brazen and blatant by getting away with it. So: what did those."scientists" start out and get away with? How many studies are just lies over fabrications made up by propaganda bureaus and we didn't even notice? How many patients got treatments stemming from those fabrications? How many studies went nowhere because they based on something that was just made up? How many things go wrong because someone wanted to make China look cool and just made up "science"?"

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

And how science bullshit websites gobble their bullshit up. Look at the technology communities here on Lemmy. There is not one week without some spurious claim by Chinese scientists who apparently revolutionize batteries two times a month at least, each revolution more hilariously beyond everything physically possible than the previous one.

Yet, most ppl talk about how awesome this tech will be when it's finally in use, blabber about the genius behind the discovery and go into borderline conspiracy mode, suspecting "big oil" or whomever to stop this one like they supposedly stopped all the others. Physics is what "stopped the others", you gullible tech-freak! Reality stopped the one before that! Big oil or pharma or whoever are by no means without guilt when it comes.to stoping innovation, but those things are just made up. It's usually not even very thought through. It's just obvious bullshit.

The GOP’s “Election Integrity” Lawyer Was Just Indicted for Election Subversion ( www.motherjones.com )

The attorney, Christina Bobb running the Republican National Committee’s “election integrity” effort has been criminally charged by the state of Arizona for her efforts to help Donald Trump steal the 2020 election. This turn of events highlights the Orwellian meaning of the phrase “election integrity,” as used by Trump...

Nonono, you don't understand! He was at Brandon's heels, and now they try to smear him with the evidence they have against him, but he never had against Brandon! But... Uhm... When are they going to warp?

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

While this is hardly a surprise after the streaming market became a clusterfuck of proportions hardly imaginable, that will lead to more enshitification. Over the course of the coming years, those services will incerasingly try to "re-gain" subscribers in this weird roulette of subscriptions, so they will all count on exclusives, fracturing the market even more.

The only people untouched by this will be the pirates, as always. You hit "go" in your sonarr-application and some time later, the thing you wanted to watch just appears in your library.

Not to forget, making choices for the very weakest we have: Children that are too sick to be vaccinated. Your “uneasiness” towards a little jab millions of people have survived absolutely fine might take someone else's little wonder away. Because you circle jerked a bit on facefuck or shitter.

Absolutely. Yet, neglecting the sick in a Facebook-fueled self-righteous frenzy of flawed “uhm akchually” is even more disgusting in my eyes than endangering the other healthy children is.

Supreme Court weighs Donald Trump case, abortion bans, homeless camps in blockbuster week ( www.usatoday.com )

Most notably, the high court will weigh if and when a former president can claim criminal immunity for acts committed while in office as Trump, who is currently on trial for allegedly concealing hush money payments to an adult film actress, fights three additional indictments over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and...

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

From the outside, the US increasingly looks like an autocracy lead by those "judges" in the supreme court that apparently can not be touched in any way and somehow get to decide just about everything.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Yep, if that happens, the judiciary breaks down. If I do not need to respect the judgement of the supreme Court, why do I need.to respect the judgement of any court?

If this takes root among law enforcement (this seems to have already started big time) and among the general public, public order becomes impossible to maintain.
