Yeah, but this court picks up stupid cases that Fox News prime time is complaining about.

8-1

Whenever we see a ruling like that, we all immediately know who the 1 is before reading the rest of the article.

I was a bit bummed that Loren Taylor narrowly lost in 2022. Thao beat him by .6% when round two of rank choice voting was tallied.

Thao is from the Oakland Hills, and that’s the part of town with more money and higher voter turnout. Taylor, also a Democrat, is a black man whose family has been in Oakland for 3 generations, and he has an impressive education.

I feel like Thao got the vote because people in the Hills thought she would prioritize their needs. IMHO, on paper, Taylor was better equipped to empathize with Oakland’s marginalized communities and was better prepared for the administrative needs of the jobs.

Yeah, Oakland is a great city that was starting to come up again, but it’s been back sliding over the past eight years.

I will say this though, the last 6 months have felt a little different here. In a good way. Doesn’t quite feel like the Wild West right now.

She’s praising the team for recruiting based on skill, not color. A 1/5 of Germans believe the team isn’t white enough.

I had to travel to Austin for work a few weeks ago. Got off the plane, checked into the hotel, took a shower, decided to use mother nature’s melatonin to help with the jet lag… then, boom. Upload your driver’s license.

So I had visited some sites that were hosted outside US and didn’t give a fuck about Texas’ stupid laws.

These laws are not only authoritarian, they’re fucking useless.

Her fans don’t read.

She’s absolutely hiding this so people don’t mock her trash sales numbers.

$90 million would’ve been impressive and would’ve rivaled what New York does.

California only does about $30m, and Texas is around $15m. I guess Ron wants Florida to be in last place among the biggest states.

She was great, but that interviewer was pretty terrible.

True. Republicans famously love funding public education.

If only there were states that passed similar laws that we could look at to see how things played out.

Oh wait. We do. And none of this shit happened.

Traditionally, before Trump, former American Presidents were called “President,” “Mr. President,” or “Former President.”

That said, good journalists are refraining from using present-tense “President” labels for Trump because of his election denial bullshit. They’re calling him “former” when they do refer to his previous job.

Given the context around the bad joke, it seems like he was going for sarcasm, but it just came out like trash because he’s old and no longer on top of his game.

Imagine saying this 15 or 20 years ago when we still had lots of WWII vets alive. He’d be done.

Perfect Dark was the mediocrest of the rare games.

That’s definitely not a popular opinion.

Not until there is a democratic majority in the house. Impeachment starts there for federal judges.

simplejack ,
@simplejack@lemmy.world avatar

State has nothing to do with it. She is an appointed federal judge. If she’s going to be removed, she has to be removed federally.

More specifically, impeachment proceeding for her removal would start in the House of Representatives… which is currently controlled by the GOP.

simplejack ,
@simplejack@lemmy.world avatar

And you need the house to kick things off. And the house is controlled by the GOP.

simplejack ,
@simplejack@lemmy.world avatar

My money is on him just being on probation or being fined. The judge has already said that he was very reluctant to throw him in jail because he’s a former president.

I don’t agree with that perspective, but he already didn’t throw this guy in jail after his actions routinely threatened the court the family members of people involved in the case.

Maybe Trump will -finally- go to jail for something, but I not holding my breath.

simplejack ,
@simplejack@lemmy.world avatar

So, basically, the conviction has changed nothing for this poll.

simplejack ,
@simplejack@lemmy.world avatar

Although that tracks with the republicans that didn’t like him before the trial.

So, I gather that stupid popcorn buckets are officially a thing now.

Example: the first few weeks when the term “fake news” was in reference to Trump disinformation, not in service of Trump disinformation.

simplejack ,

The argument is usually

  1. we need more democrats or people caucusing with them in office if you want to see more progressive legislation getting passed.
  2. electing more democrats is MUCH easier to do in the swing states. Electing someone more progressive in a Trump +40 state is going to be damn near impossible
simplejack , (edited )
@simplejack@lemmy.world avatar

Nuance.

Does Biden have enough people caucusing with his party to win the majority leader gavel and prevent Mitch McConnell from dictating what gets brought to the floor? Yes.

Does Biden have enough progressives to get more progressive stuff passed? No. Two conservative democrats block that.

Arizona will be good place to fight for one of those seats, since Sinema is out and that is a swing state. West Virginia is NOT a swing state, and left leaning people need to look elsewhere for additional progressives. WV is redder than Superman’s underwear. The fact that they’ve elected anyone with a D is an outlier there.
