it'd be cool if we could like vote for shit. But like, also fix the fucking voting system.

Would like to see more talk about that alongside voting itself. People seem too content with the shitty system we have. And i get it, it's a kill or be killed world out there or whatever the fuck, but like, we should have standards also.

Currently our standard is "literally fucking doing the bare minimum possible" and i honestly just cant fucking take this shit seriously anymore.

KillingTimeItself ,

dude holy shit this post is like if you asked chatgpt to write a dissertation on this shit in a sociological tone, but without fucking punctuating it.

KillingTimeItself ,

dude this comments section is weirdly intellectual for a lemmy post. I feel like i've stepped into a debate on animals rights with a college student and ben shapiro.

I get it, fuck this guy, but not like fuck this guy that much, but also like fuck this guy. That's all that had to be said.

KillingTimeItself ,

you could always engage in something like i2p. Less shit to be found there, but a pretty neat little place on the internet.

KillingTimeItself ,

just sell me a fucking bluray without encryption and maybe i'll consider buying them for fucks sake.

KillingTimeItself ,

DVDs are almost good, they still have encryption but its so shit you can just brute force it and it cripples. And somehow that's legal, but decss or whatever it was wasnt. Gotta love IP

KillingTimeItself ,

well i mean yeah, anything to the left of the left most position on a scale would be, well. Left.

KillingTimeItself ,

you a PDA type? Damn, that's unfortunate.

KillingTimeItself ,

i have only ever had one post of mine be deleted, and that was a post talking about suicide. I don't exactly agree with the deletion, but hey i don't make the rules, it's their community.

KillingTimeItself ,

dude im as left as they come, when it comes to free speech, i believe that it should exist, and that i should also be free to beat the ever living shit out of someone if they have a bad opinion.

But that's just me practicing free speech, who knows what my actual opinion on the topic is. Holding "extremist" views as a method of articulating my points is one of my favorites. You can literally just say shit, and nobody will care. It's incredible how little other people care of your existence.

JUST TODAY I was going to buy WinRar. I've used the software forever, for free, and I just thought... I appreciate this, they've never given me grief, and I'm going to pay them.

And I went on their page to subscribe for a lifetime membership, and they wanted 20 bucks, which I was okay with, but it does not include Major Updates! I guess I'll buy it and just click the do not check for updates button but that seemed kind of, I don't know....

KillingTimeItself ,

my friend, let me enlighten you to the ways of 7zip.

KillingTimeItself ,

and im sure the US loses even more grid production capacity when it's flooded due to the inevitable warming of the ocean too huh?

KillingTimeItself ,

ok so technically, a watt is directly convertable to a joule, which is a unit of energy. So he isn't wrong. But he is also wrong because he is using name plate production capacity, rather than the total produced capacity, that or he is simply fucking up the numbers. But lets be honest, homie is NOT doing the math.

KillingTimeItself ,

"renewables are unsustainable"

"ignore the fact that we produce oil from the middle east because our locally produced oil is too clean to be refined into usable products for the US domestic market"

KillingTimeItself ,

also hot take: denim is just a shit product.

It's the modern era, im sure we can produce MUCH more resilient fabrics and cloth items than denim.

KillingTimeItself ,

yes, and this twitter post, (or wherever it comes from) is definitely not representative of the original sites layout in any substantial manner.

KillingTimeItself ,

in this scenario it wouldn't be speed, though, it would be speed over time. Speed is velocity.

Watts are just joules but arbitrarily defined. Joules are a unit of total energy. A collective amount of work potential. Watts are an in situ measurement of those joules doing work.

If we want to talk about confusing units, W and VA are the units to be talking about.

KillingTimeItself ,

i feel like you wouldn't need a dump load for solar, due to how it's setup. At best you just dont do anything, and worst you disconnect the panels entirely, that could be bad for the panels though idk.

It's different with typical generation because it's almost always converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. Which means if you load dump, suddenly the RPM of the turbine driving the generator, and likewise, the generator, is going to vastly speed up. Which given the fundamental mechanics of how those work, is going to fuck shit up. Dump loads exist as a really easy solution there.

But with solid state generation, i'm not sure it would really matter. Unless you're running a decentralized grid maybe.

KillingTimeItself ,

pumped hydro is pretty slick but incredibly dependent on geology and ecosystem.

Thermal storage is a similar vein, you can even use water, we do use water for this even. Compressed air as suggested, i believe there's a mine somewhere in the US that's used a compressed air storage plant. And of course, motion, flywheels go hard i hear, but i find those to be less preferable, even if high energy density. I imagine those would work better at scale.

KillingTimeItself ,

the other arguably more effective option for home use is dumping it into heat. Heating up water is a great heat storage solution for radiant heating for instance. Getting that energy back out is arguably harder, but hot water is also pretty useful, so.

KillingTimeItself ,

i mean, conceptually it's simple to store, you put it in a container, the tricky part is doing it effectively, in a way that won't create a massive bomb. And also at density.

KillingTimeItself ,

wait until you figure out how we solve this problem...

wait for it...

You just don't produce that energy.

KillingTimeItself ,

Somehow internet populists have become convinced that liberalism = the government never does anything. Ask literally any economist and they will tell you government intervention and regulation are needed in many things.

ah yes, the classic laissez faire interpretation of libertarian.

KillingTimeItself ,

If the grid allows negative prices, grid storage becomes a profitable business opportunity.

in fact, if the price of electricity on the grid changes at all. Storage becomes a point where money can be made.

KillingTimeItself ,

ah yes the physics concept of "post scarcity"

Power plant operators are known to have dreaded this inevitability. There will be no more electrons.

KillingTimeItself ,

some clocks are bound to grid frequency. It's the easiest most accessible way to clock time semi accurately.

KillingTimeItself ,

tell that to the big hydrogen storage industry, im sure they'd love to sell you a subscription for hydrogen storage vessels :)

KillingTimeItself ,

that's how we've been doing it for the past 2 centuries, it'll be how we continue to do it for the next 2 centuries.

KillingTimeItself ,

solar panels are typically pretty warm already. There are even panels that allow you to push water through them to keep them cool.

I wonder if that would be more effective than dumping resistive heating into water. I suppose it could still be bad for the panel, i would assume panel manufacturers would have data on this, but im too lazy to look it up because whatever site they have is probably a shitfest that i wouldn't be able to navigate easily.

KillingTimeItself ,

yeah that checks out i suppose. One of these days i will get around to looking into it out of curiosity.

KillingTimeItself ,

sit your wife down in front of vim, and make her use it.

It'll make more sense immediately.

If not, divorce.

KillingTimeItself ,

The philosophers religion.

This is definitely some shit Nietzsche would crack up high as fuck on opium. Hell im pretty sure he did.

also, if we're going by traditional religious figures. Satanism. Though modern satanism is very different. I would argue that this is more accurately described as "christian satanism" or "christo-satanism"

KillingTimeItself ,

Nietzsche is a character. Man has done a lot of things in his life. You can basically interpret everything he said in numerous ways. I was mostly pointing out that Nietzsche was probably the most apt example given this scenario. op literally said "like a toddler who fries little ants with a lens"

Anyway, i found the philosopher in the comments, my point was made.

KillingTimeItself ,

well no see you misunderstand, this is satanism from the view of classical christianity (i'm definitely using this term wrong, i just think it's funny lol, don't read into it). I.E. satan is "an evil god" which even through classical christianity, is not accurate. But i would really recommend you see what certain christians think of satanism lol.

They lack the mental capacity to properly formulate any other religion, so they just replace jesus/god with satan/devil and call it a day at it's simplest.

KillingTimeItself ,

i suppose the concept would be that from the view of christianity, that jesus would be the same, and that satanists would worship the devil, as depicted in christianity.

KillingTimeItself ,

dude even the fucking nazis used nietzsches shit. To argue that it "CANNOT" be misconstrued is probably one of the fucking statements of all time.

KillingTimeItself ,

no, they don't, but like i said, this is what they think satanism is to them.

It's not about the fundamentals of religion, it's about how they perceive what they believe to be the "anti religion" think about it. If you're a christian, and you've told your entire life that god is good, and satan is evil, and that christianity is about christ and about what he does. When presented with the concept of satanism, doesn't it seem apt that it would essentially be christianity, but loosely applied to what christianities concept of satan is?

It's less about how religion works, and more about a perverted concept of religion.

KillingTimeItself ,

sick. cool. So uh. How long until power generation happens now?

Ah who am i kidding, it'll be at least a decade, probably more like two. Three including manufacturing and building all the plants.

KillingTimeItself ,

thats the LEAST of my concerns lmao.

Gonna need one hell of a setup to even produce that level of heat.

KillingTimeItself ,

it's definitely one of the ideas of all time. i just wish people would stop pretending like it's "just right around the corner"

Meanwhile germany is burning more coal than it ever has to generate power because they no longer have nuclear energy. And gas is expensive.

KillingTimeItself ,

i like this meta, i agree.

KillingTimeItself ,

its right 100% of the time 60% of the time

KillingTimeItself ,

yep. Given how long it'll take to develop fusion power, multiple generations of people will have worked on it in practice, and many more in theory.

KillingTimeItself ,

It's also just kind of how these things tend to go. I mean even the the funny international one ITER. Has had this exact issue, they keep pushing back deadlines over and over again. Which is only really surprising if you aren't familiar with the tech, it's highly complex. But it's a great example as to why this stuff happens.

KillingTimeItself ,

we said "yo stop fucking ruling us nerds" and they went "lol ok, but only if you beat us in war" and then we did.

I mean to some degree, you aren't wrong about violence working effectively, that's definitely accurate.

KillingTimeItself ,

though to be fair, i don't believe war and violence are the same thing. War is an excuse to commit violence, violence is sometimes the result of attempting to gain rights.

KillingTimeItself ,

but was #1 in women’s chess by a fairly large margin for literally decades (basically from the end of the 80’s forward). She’s been inactive since 2015, but she still holds the highest peak ELO rating in women’s chess of all time (and is the only woman to ever cross 2700).

and my point is that these stats wouldn't change, because you would be sorting them exactly the same, the difference would just be your competition is no longer one party only. Though i suppose you could make the argument that having a womens league in the event that your female league size is literally 1/10 the male league. Seems like a skill issue to me though.
