Vermillion also comes from Latin, Vermiculus. Mainly used in Portuguese as vermelho for red.

GreatDong3000 ,

Googled it. It wasn't because of worms in general. It was from Vermiculus which is the diminutive of Vermis but also was how they called a very specific worm, at some point in time the only way they knew where to get red pigments from was by crushing this worm.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

GreatDong3000 ,

This is the fediverse and that is their instance. You just move to another instance and mute them if you are desatisfied with them.

GreatDong3000 ,

Man do you know how many instances exist? I hate this idea of trying to coordinate defederation across all bigger instances all at once. You have the option of migrating to an instance which is already defederated from them, or hosting your own instance and defederating from whoever you want. You can also mute them. Don't come to a decentralized network with the expectation of imposing centralized decision making behaviour?

GreatDong3000 ,

The point was the other way around, we are not supposed to believe people with basic needs met don't work.

GreatDong3000 ,

Only if you pour too much, I had success with a single drop

GreatDong3000 OP ,

You are right, we should be able to build a mega laser cluster capable of projecting ads on the surface of the moon.

GreatDong3000 OP ,

Omg I would love this so much

GreatDong3000 OP ,

Cool we can turn this into a new gig work app. The uber of ads. You open up the app and pay people small amounts to name drop something in a conversation. You could pay like 50 cents per person to 200 different people in your area to name drop your small business, that shit would slap. Then we could start using this to make people say anything for 50 cents each time they say it so we can spread fake news and gossip. I like this version of the future so much.

GreatDong3000 OP ,

One ad break between each floor or pay for direct lift that is a killer idea.

GreatDong3000 OP ,

Great idea. We can also set a timer for the wifi on your phone to be disconnected automatically and you have to watch an ad before the time runs out to postphone it.

GreatDong3000 OP ,

We could end up engineering birth marks with arbitrary shapes like the Nike logo which may be passed on to offspring

‘In the US they think we’re communists!’ The 70,000 workers showing the world another way to earn a living ( www.theguardian.com )

The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the globe’s largest industrial co-operative, with workers paying for the right to share in its profits – and its losses. In return for giving more to their employer, they expect more back.

Corporate socialism? Honestly never heard that. Market Socialism is the form of socialism that seeks to have publicly-traded companies abolished and replaced by co-ops. Mixed with state owned companies in the case of natural monopolies and basic services (transport, electricity, education, health, etc).

Market Socialism is very much aligned with OG Marxism, so I see how red-scared people may call it communism.

GreatDong3000 ,

People downvoting cause they have no idea how this shit works

GreatDong3000 ,

Oh it was funded with tax/university money so that means a 3rd party private company, which had nothing to do at all with the funding/research, gets to profit from it gottcha.

GreatDong3000 ,

That's why huge instances are bad, they can't moderate all those users (I am on a bigger instance myself tho don't judge me).

Capitalism illustrated ( media.mas.to )

Cartoon about a cat and a pig.
The cat is scruffy, the pig wears a suit.

Cat: Can I buy a house?

Pig: I already bought all the houses.

Cat: Well how much to buy one off you?

Pig: More than you could ever afford.

Cat: Is the rent cheap at least?

Pig: No it's double the mortgage so I can buy more houses.

Cat: We truly live in the best economic system possible.

The pig is now talking to a police dog while pointing at the cat.

Pig: Yes officer that's the one that was annoying me.

The police dog looks angry as he holds his baton in his hand.

No, big corp with millions of users they cannot moderate defeats the purpose of a fediverse.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed ( mastodon.social )

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

Thread showing meta hid a comment that mentioned Pixelfed
ALT
GreatDong3000 ,

You can search for threads and literally see these comments yourself buddy

GreatDong3000 ,

The what?

GreatDong3000 ,

Honey blocking all mentions of Pixelfed is not at all like blocking one instance, it is blocking the entire platform. It would be the same as blocking all mentions of Lemmy or all mentions of Mastodon, which would not block ONE instance, but ALL INSTANCES.

GreatDong3000 ,

Other people care, I certainly don't care if you care or not doe and I didn't ask for that spontaneous bit of information. You don't care? Uh, ok... I guess.

GreatDong3000 ,

Youtube was blocking comments mentioning Fediverse and ActivityPub 2 years ago way before all the exposure the Fediverse got last year. Facebook was blocking links to mastodon instances also before all that. There is absolutely no way a very specific word such as Pixelfed would be blocked "accidentally", how do you propose such accidental block would even be possible? Oops, intern smashed his butt against a keyboard and set a filter that happened to catch Pixelfed by accident? Come on.

GreatDong3000 ,

That's exactly why Threads is incompatible with the Fediverse. Any huge server that is impossible to moderate for admins is detrimental to the network and failure to properly moderate is the number one reason we should be looking at to defederate from instances.

Automatic "spam" protection is the exact thing which co-opted e-mail. Big corps with the largest e-mail user base use algorithms that automatically assume the worst about any small e-mail server. If you spin up a small server you are assumed to be spam unless unless unless, which ended up with e-mail being centralized in the hands of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Apple, despite being theoretically decentralized too.

Is that what we want for the Fediverse? 4 or 5 huge instances automatically defederating from all small instances unless they fit some criteria defined by the big corps, which they can change anytime?

GreatDong3000 ,

I'll copy and paste my reply to someone else here:

To summarize, how big Threads is and how they decide to moderate the content matters for anyone who doesn't want the Fedi to end up like e-mail.

GreatDong3000 ,

Imagine Reddit does this next lmao one day you open up and all your real life social media are linked to your u/Lick_My_Fuckhole profile, your coworkers see you as "people you may know" on their profiles. Neat

GreatDong3000 ,

If I wasn't trying to get away from Meta I wouldn't be on fucking lemmy I'd be on facebook. The whole point of me being here is I am trying to get away from them and other big tech platforms :)

You come to the fediverse for a reason.

GreatDong3000 ,

Yup, me on the fedi running away from big tech platforms, now meta stalking us even here bro wtf

GreatDong3000 ,

We who? Speak for yourself please

GreatDong3000 ,

I've heard people run it for single users easily even on free tier hosting, like Oracle's.

GreatDong3000 ,

Spiders more civilized than some of my coworkers

GreatDong3000 ,

I think fediverse platforms could have the option to call for a vote in defederating.

Meaning, idk, users who have been active for the past X months on the instance get notified about the admins wanting to defederate from some instance, then the users get to check out the instance themselves and vote yes or no to defederate.

To be clear, I am not saying this should be "mandatory", I am saying instance admins could have the option to call for a vote if and when they want to.

So you could decide to join an instance that vows to go the democratic way if you want to. Nothing would bind the admins to always call for a vote except their own word tho. Or you could not care about it at all and join an instance that also doesn't care.

I also would like to get notified whenever the instance I'm in defederates from another instance, and have an easily accessible list of all instances that we have defederated from.

GreatDong3000 ,

Cool, that's good to know. Thanks!

GreatDong3000 ,

They are calling it TikTok bill as propaganda, in reality this bill is not specific against TikTok, but to ANY APP/WEBSITE that has at least 20% ownsership from ANYONE which resides or has business headquartered in CHINA, RUSSIA, IRAN or NORTH KOREA *

* The list of countries is of course subject to future expansion.

GreatDong3000 ,

Spanish tortilla.

It is just a huge potato pie with only potatoes, onions, eggs and olive oil. Look it up if you never seen it.

GreatDong3000 ,

It's easy to make the hardest part is flipping it without destroying it. If you have a double-sided pan that's easy too.

GreatDong3000 ,

Would it be possible to have consistent karma on Lemmy? With instances being able to defederate from one another I thought that would be impossible unless there was some centralized karma counter.

GreatDong3000 , (edited )

Afaik upvote count on Reddit isn't even real anymore. It is still somehow rooted on the real count but their algorithm tampers with the count in undisclosed ways.

GreatDong3000 ,

Hi am noob why systemd bad? I use Debian, is fucked?

Honestly I've been hearing about this for a while now but never bothered to check, I'm too lazy for that.

GreatDong3000 ,

Is this community related to the reddit sub of the same name? Like the mods are the same people?

GreatDong3000 ,

Ohhh, I see. Thanks for answering!

GreatDong3000 ,

Ya that sub used to be much better before all the mod changes I think last year or 22 don't remember exactly. Now there are a bunch of people there defending capitalism and corporations whenever people make diacussion posts it is hilarious.
