seed bee

pelletbucket OP ,
@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

now I'm sitting here thinking about it, from one perspective, you could consider that particular bee to be a slave to the rest of the bees

pelletbucket OP ,
@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

that's why it's all about the human perspective. the first person to give it a name lived in a world of kings and queens, but if they've lived in a world with no kings and queens but the world that had slaves, they might have called it the slave bee. there are infinite iterations, hence my question

pelletbucket OP ,
@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

I tried googling "queen bee in Arabic" but I can't tell if it's giving me the Arabic term for queen bee or if it's just translating the words lol

I mean that's a good question but there's no reason to apply it just to leftist governments

the palm tree out front dropped its pollen branch (idk what they're actually called), and it was a lot of fun watching the tiny pollinators have a field day with it. I have to cut it down before it makes a huge mess, but I usually give them several days to party

there are some Britton's wild petunia across the street that are the only plants outside enjoying this heat wave, they're blooming like crazy. vibrant purple flowers

the sage and amaryllis in my front flower bed are spreading out like crazy, and three different snake plants that I've propagated have started producing babies

pelletbucket ,
@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

oh they grow all over the place down here, I just heard somebody say that propagating them was hard so I figured I'd give it a shot. turns out it's really easy so I've got like four of them now, though my backyard has probably 200 ft² of them growing naturally.

I've always fantasized about selling my props to local plant shops, but I never have a plan when I start propagating something. I found out how easy sage was to propagate, bought one plant and now I have a dozen and I don't know what to do with them

I order out pretty much every day. for me, I stick with Uber Eats because subscribing to Uber One does save me money over the course of a month, eliminating delivery fees (but not service fees) for a large number of restaurants.

now I prefer to order from a restaurant that delivers itself, when I'm in the mood for pizza, I call the place across the street, if I want fried chicken, I order from the Jewish deli across the street (they seriously have the best fucking fried chicken). etc.

Uber Eats is pretty good about refunds when orders are wrong. the drivers are hit or miss, but that's going to be true of every service. the most annoying thing is when they block my fucking door

the main drawback is that Uber allows the drivers to take multiple orders at once, so you have to keep in mind how to make your order so that things don't get soggy. I keep oil and vinegar in the fridge, and order my sandwiches dry. if I'm getting a gyro, I order it dry, and I have a pot of tzatziki in my fridge. stuff like that. Taco Bell will never hit right when it's delivered, even if you're really stoned. Taco Bell needs to be eaten fresh

do things to make it easier for them to find you. make sure you've got a super obvious house number that's visible from the street. even if it's daytime, turn on your porch light when you're expecting a delivery. I don't know if it actually tells the drivers that I'm signaling for food delivery, but my brain tells me it helps them find me

I think it would be really cool if food delivery companies gave you a little Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device that you could put outside your house that'll turn green when you're expecting an Uber Eats delivery or something like that

Does Trump being found guilty actually matter?

Since he can still run for office and become president while in prison, is this actually going to do anything to stop him from being president? Obviously it's not gonna sway anyone who's gonna vote for him, so is there any actual way this keeps him from office, or at least has some positive effect for us? I wanna join the...

pelletbucket ,
@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

no. if he gets prison time, he will lose his right to vote during the period of incarceration, but that will be restored once he's released. that's if he gets locked up

if he is sentenced to time, and actually probably even if he isn't, they're going to do an immediate appeal, and most likely he will be out on bail during the appeal process. again, that's only if they were planning on locking him up in the first place

but no, there are only three qualifications for being president:

  1. Be a natural-born citizen of the United States.
  2. Be at least 35 years old.
  3. Have been a resident of the United States for 14 years.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

so why are they using it at the end of a sentence if it's not to indicate trailing off?

pelletbucket ,

I know that they're weird, but they're all doing it. there must be a reason. they must have been taught something in school

he's not talking about parents of autistic children. he's talking about parents of autistic children who make that their main personality trait, walking around referring to themselves as "autistic moms", intentionally using confusing language so you can't tell if they're autistic, or if their child is autistic. sort of like Munchausen by Proxy but you don't have to fake it

rice is only going to absorb water if it's directly touching the water. if it were good it absorbing humidity, you wouldn't be able to store it almost indefinitely in burlap as we've been doing for centuries.

italian has prendere un granchio, lit. meaning, "to catch a crab".

It indicates a gross mistake, the achievement of a much lower result than hoped for or, more rarely, purchasing something believing it to be of much higher value than it actually is.
This expression, among the most common used in Italian to indicate a mistake, has its origins in fishing , particularly sport fishing. If you lower the line into the sea until you reach the seabed and touch the bottom with the hook and the bait, it may happen that a crab bites instead of a fish . As soon as the crustacean is hooked, it immediately begins to struggle violently to free itself from the hook, giving the fisherman the impression that it has instead hooked a large prey.
Fishing for a crab with a rod is normally a source of disappointment for the fisherman, since it is a useless prey, which in some cases can even damage the line. The origin of the phrase was born from this disappointment, generated by the expectation of a large fish.

everybody's feed is an echo chamber. each person has access to something like 1% of the total videos posted, so two feeds will be unrecognizable. all the videos I get are about how to help Palestinian families, or short history documentaries, or a published linguist talking about interesting words, this guy who collects license plates (I don't care about license plates but his channel is great), this guy who collects stamps and helps people evaluate the sets that they find in grandad's closet (I don't give a shit about stamps but the history that he talks about alongside them is great). the Green Brothers, if you're still into them. plus all the major news outlets are on there, as well as quite a few politicians. woodworkers, clay artists, stonemasons, glass blowers, all showing their art daily

I've been blocking anybody who does undeclared advertising for like a year, and they just don't show me that shit anymore

Telehex failed (I guess they've been trying to raise money on Kickstarter since at least 2015) because it offers no real advantage over a regular folding allen key with interchangeable heads. it's only good for 3, 4, 5 & 6mm heads, so you're paying an absurd amount of money for something that you could replace with one of these for a lot less money in the exact same form factor. plus, you're introducing multiple possible points of failure; there's no way a Telehex would survive as many uses as something significantly cheaper. same reason the universal socket didn't stick around

it's bringing us first-hand accounts from struggles around the country and around the world. it's the reason we had first hand footage of what was really happening in palestine. you get updates from the front lines in Ukraine faster than the news does because you're following the javelin gunner that made the shots. it's the only reason I know what's going on in the country of Georgia right now, it's the only reason I know that there still finding whatever polyvinyl chemicals in the soil of East Palestine Ohio. it's probably going to serve you dancing girls at first, but once it gets to know your tastes, you'll be served videos from archaeologists, biologists, artists and professional divers that have retired to a Caribbean island, who take you along as a member of their team gets the bends through the whole process.
