Airbnb undermined team that removed extremist users, whistleblower claims | CNN Business ( edition.cnn.com )

Jess Hernandez worked full-time as an investigations analyst for Airbnb’s dangerous organizations team from May 2022 to November 2023, researching extremist networks as part of the company’s work to keep dangerous individuals off the platform. But she says she was terminated in November 2023, shortly after her team was...

Fascism is not a "political view". Fascism is the extinction of politics. It sits outside the bounds of political discourse.

Well, yes, but the individuals involved are not the main point here. The point is the earth is getting hotter really quickly and humanity needs to pull it's head out of its ass and stop causing it.

As this trend continues we're going to see more and more situations where previously safe choices have suddenly become unsafe and situations where there are no safe choices. Focussing on individual "bad choices" by people in developing countries is, sorry, idiotic and tragic.

Climate change will eventually affect you or someone you care about and when it does there will be some dufus on the internet going "duh, shouldn't have bought a house in tornado alley" or "don't drive through floodwaters, fool" as if it was your fault. Maybe then you'll remember this post but probably not.

Damn I thought The Rock had finally entered politics but it turns out his name is Dwayne Johnson :(

"Moderation tools are nonexistent on here. It also eats up storage like crazy [...] The software is downright frustrating to work with" - Can any other instance admins relate to this?

After a year online the free speech-focused instance 'Burggit' is shutting down. Among other motivations, the admins point to grievances with the Lemmy software as one of the main reasons for shutting down the instance. In a first post asking about migrating to Sharkey, one of the admins states:...

@rimu@piefed.social avatar

When I started working on PieFed I was all enthusiastic about the idea of moderation tools. But when it came time to actually code that functionality it was like pulling teeth. Just. Sooo. Boring. It took weeks longer than it should have, for that reason. This was really surprising to me because I'm deeply passionate about moderation and 'gardening' a community.

That's the thing about open source, people just do the fun stuff. There's always some fun stuff to do which distracts from the boring-but-necessary.

Harvard Scholars Suggest Pollsters Ask Questions to AI Simulations of Voters Because Real People Won't Answer The Phone ( futurism.com )

Instead of asking humans who they would vote for, try to understand the nuances of their thoughts and concerns, let those messages bubble up to candidates so they can adjust their campaign to meet voters' demand, instead of that, why not just segment humans into a bunch of shallow stereotypes (the socialist Millennial, the...

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yeah, I think it's that one. Does Discover pull it's content from flathub.org?

It says "by Signal Foundation" on it and 900,000 people have installed it so it seems good enough to me.

I wish they were able to find better examples of the courses and the content (not just the summary from marketing materials). The examples they provided were really tame.

in China, law enforcement is designed to protect the state and the Party rather than the people, journalism is prescribed to create national unity rather than act as a check against the system, and the law is intended to protect the regime rather than its citizenry.

Very succinctly put!

In the Constitution of China you'll find a section where it explicitly states that the interests of the group outweigh those of the individual. It's baked into the legal bedrock.

Yeah, I read the whole thing. It was a good story but I felt that when it came time to "deliver the goods" they fell a bit short. For example, this: https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/final-image-global-south.png. That is under the heading "Clearly authoritarian", which seems pretty strong for such a boring sounding course.

I stand by my earlier comment.

The headline had me hoping for things like "Xinjiang - how we incarcerated 1 million people for only $5k pp / year" or "Integrating vassel states - lessons from Hong Kong" or "The Tibet Journey" or "Propaganda for fun and profit Steve Bannon edition".

Nope 😴

I enjoyed this book on sociopathy in society https://www.amazon.com/Sociopath-Next-Door-Martha-Stout/dp/0767915828

I'm not 100% sold on the contagious idea but certainly every latent socio and narc has had a masterclass in recent years which would tend to embolden them.

I made https://www.chorebuster.net which does that.

It's is not self hosted or FOSS but it has a one-time lifetime license or a very cheap subscription. Free 1 month trial.

Best way of playing Wipeout these days?

So...after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch...I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series...was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?...

rimu ,

You can play the original PS1 version if Wipeout in your browser

I don't know if that's the 'best' way, but there it is.

a huge backlog of more than 5,600 orders

Apparently some people with money think there is going to be a big expansion in air travel.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yes, it's completely possible.

Kbin has it, which it calls "Collections" - see https://kbin.social/magazines/collections. Anyone can add a collection which can be subscribed to by anyone. It is very flexible and crowd-sources the work of organizing the communities into collections. I like it.

PieFed calls it "Topics" - see https://piefed.social/topics. They are arraigned into a hierarchy and are created by the the instance admin. This could give a better experience to the end user but puts more work onto the instance admins.

Why the National Guard took so long is an interesting question but the more important one is why didn't the FBI, etc notice the absolute state of the maga-verse in the weeks leading up to Jan 6th? All their plans were out in the open, even I knew what was going to go down and I'm just a random internet person on the other side of the world not the NSA or whatever.

They had weeks to prepare but instead got caught with their pants down. It was completely negligent. Heads should roll.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

Sorry you stumbled into the wrong instance. Fortunately, other instances already offer alternative communities that are more active and moderated differently.

This could have been avoided if the UI included a warning about communities with problems. Like how PieFed does: https://piefed.social/post/89659

IMO getting a bit into the psychology of why people want to believe this crap is pretty key. Narcissism, cognitive bias...

Check this out https://github.com/rimu/no-qanon. Go into the 'sources' folder and start clicking around. A lot of the disinfo sites are in separate files but https://github.com/rimu/no-qanon/blob/master/sources/default.txt contains most of them in a big disorganized pile.

Also take a look at https://www.reddit.com/r/QAnonCasualties/ to understand the human cost at the individual & family level.

In the early days, trance rarely had vocals or if it did they were just another instrument among many. The idea of trance was to help the dancer get into a certain mental state which is beyond words and having too many vocals tends to pull things down into the concrete and breaks the spell.
