If I have a USB powered device, could I leave it plugged into a portable power bank (like the kind you charge your phone with) as a power outage backup?

Basically as the title says. We have semi frequent power outages where I live. The noise machine in my daughter's room goes out and wakes her up. If I were to buy a USB powered one, plug it into a power bank like one of those 10000ma ones you get for charging cell phones, would it have continuous power. Basically like a cheap...

Cort ,

Both of my USBc power banks have passthrough charging and would work for this. That's the feature you need to look for.

However, keeping a battery bank charged to 100% isn't good for longevity, make sure you get a good name brand one so it doesn't catch fire.

Edit to add: the ecoflow & jackery power banks can also charge their batteries while running something. They can do 120v/240v and run the current nose machine, but they're more expensive

Cort ,

Honestly I thought the movie was fairly good for being an origin story. Kinda disappointed it didn't get a sequel

Cort ,

I think the GPU being separately upgradable on the 16" pokes a tiny hole in your argument. But I generally agree, there's not too much that is saved or retained when upgrading. But for some people it's worth it, if they're reusing the ram, SSD, Wi-Fi card in addition to the parts you mention, AND they're not too rough on the case, screen, and keyboard/trackpad.

Cort ,

Now that I think about it there may be a way to bring him back, did I ever get around to telling you the story of Darth Plagueis the wise?

Cort ,

Depends on how much they paid in the 90s. Panels were 10-20x more expensive back then. And it's a 1kw array so like 40mwh over its 30 year lifespan.

Cort ,

It was never viable, you're forgetting manchin & sinema in the Senate, where they confirm judges.

Cort ,

That's weird to see avocados in packaging. In my area they just stack them on a produce shelf like onions, no packaging or lasers required

Cort ,

Fuck, I forgot about that. Good point!

Cort ,

Guilty of a felony yes, but technically not convicted

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates ( www.theguardian.com )

When you picture the tech industry, you probably think of things that don’t exist in physical space, such as the apps and internet browser on your phone. But the infrastructure required to store all this information – the physical datacentres housed in business parks and city outskirts – consume massive amounts of energy....

Cort ,

I didn't downvote but wine turbines are not easily recyclable due to all the fiberglass and resin. They're finding new uses but lots still get buried in landfills when they're decommissioned

Cort ,

Yeah it looks like a transflective LCD with an (optional) almost orange internal light. Would it make a decent e-reader or note taking device, sure, but it's not e ink.

Cort ,

They're different names for slightly different but similar animals like the Germans using Kaninchen Vs Hase for rabbit vs hare

Cort ,

Nah, they're super easy. I could get it at least 3 out of 4 times when I was a kid.

Cort ,

7 grams for the metric folks out there

Cort ,

I think the one and only benefit would be that they can have carts going both directions at the same time using the existing 2 rail system, without building a second pair of rails. I'd love to see some sort of bike add-on that would let me do this with a bicycle.

Cort ,

Lol, not all of them do. All least according to the ebikes sub on Reddit.

Cort ,

I don't think you're wrong about any of the rules or laws, and I don't generally like to conflate electric motorcycles with ebikes; my point was that persons fleeing the scene of a crime may not be following those rules and laws for ebikes.

Cort , (edited )

Sun Capitol did the same to Marsh. Sold off all the really valuable properties and then folded after they got their money out

Cort ,

I was a little disappointed they didn't show letters that were removed from the modern Latin alphabet but existed in the 2000 years since Rome, like thorn.

Cort ,

Also math

Cort ,

Not voting for RFKjr but technically he was nominated by the American independent party

Cort ,

Damn, no 2nd season announcement yet? It was a great show. If you haven't seen it go watch. Now. It's like a mildly creepy adult adventure time. Just bizarre and full of wonder, but still able to carry a great storyline. Seriously, go watch it.

Cort ,

If only it were a problem dewormer could fix

Cort ,

You can always add a fluoride mouthwash to your routine if you're worried.

Cort ,

exposure to liability for aiding and abetting or criminal conspiracy?

Cort ,

Price. If the 4090 cost $899 they wouldn't be writing this article

Cort ,

I could see that happening if these are used in gas hybrid cars, or ev taxis, or maybe grid scale energy buffering

Cort ,

Probably on the land where that can't grow citrus anymore due to the blight

Cort ,

I would assume both. They transfer basically all the heat generated into the water and only heat when water is being used.

Cort ,

I didn't see this was the onion sub and my first thought wasn't there's no way she said that. It was huh, and her base is letting her get away with it?

Has ethernet become illegitimate? A librarian flipped out after spotting me using ethernet

I plugged into ethernet (as wifi w/captive portal does not work for me). I think clearnet worked but I have no interest in that. Egress Tor traffic was blocked and so was VPN. I’m not interested in editing all my scripts and configs to use clearnet, so the library’s internet is useless to me (unless I bother to try a tor...

Cort ,

I see a lot of downvotes on your comments on this thread and I wonder if it's due to differences in nationality/geography/jurisdiction. In the USA I know we give free smartphones with working Wi-Fi to people with low incomes as a part of the lifeline program. Some of the libraries I've been to even have staff on hand to help low income people find out about these sorts of benefits, and even help them sign up. Maybe they don't have this sort of program where you're from?

And I know most people DO carry their phones with them wherever they go these days assuming they haven't forgotten it somewhere.

Am I missing something? To me, in my area, these limitations would be a choice the user has made.

Cort ,

Yeah from what I've seen of Jeff geerling's testing it can use all of a 2.5g and about 3.5 of a 5gbit adapter

Germany just now approved new laws that make setting up solar on your balcony super easy ( www.tagesschau.de )

Just 10 years ago, landlords could ban you from putting solar cells on your balcony because it makes their building look "messy". Now Germany is really pushing forward to let everybody put solar modules on their balcony with these new laws. How is legalization of balcony solar cells in your country? Is setting up solar modules...

Cort ,

Translated by Google:

In the future, private individuals will be able to operate mini solar systems as balcony power plants without complicated registration

This is the coolest part. As I understand it you'll be able to export 500w to the grid without requiring approval of your provider. The new units just plug into the wall and back feed power into your house to reduce your bill.

Depending on how the law is written, I can imagine people putting a battery between the solar and inverter so they could capture more energy and export the maximum 500w all day & night

Cort ,

Well let's do some back of the envelope math.

Conservative estimate: 6m^2 about 6000w of sunlight x 20% panel efficiency x 4hrs/day = 4800wh or 9.5 hrs at max 500w inverter output.

Liberal estimate: 6m^2 about 7200w of sunlight x 25% panel efficiency x 5hrs/day = 9000wh or 18 hrs at max 500w inverter output.

I think this would be worth it for an apartment dweller who doesn't have access to the roof or a whole field. And producing the power when and where it's used reduces transmission costs.

Cort ,

I've never understood why this isn't the responsibility of the utility to prevent back feeding at the meter when the grid is down.

Cort ,

I think I was more advocating for automatic switching at the meters when grid power isn't sensed at the meter. The same type of sensing that goes into larger solar inverters to prevent back feeding during power outages today. 20-40+ years ago your argument about having to go home to home manually shutting off connections would have made sense, but these days technology is advanced far enough that it can be done automatically without human intervention, as soon as the grid goes down. Then brought back up when grid power returns.

Cort ,

Trump's team is trying to paint the picture that all of this was standard operating procedure.

Trump lawyers: totally cool, totally legal, and certainly not an unreported in-kind donation to his political campaign.

Cort ,

Just don't practice on Rudy Giuliani

Cort ,

Lmao, I was on this site 2 nights ago just looking at the graphs.

Cort ,

Huh, Scotts seems fairly similar to English. At least enough that I could understand most of it.

Cort ,

Well the new brothers refuse to print when toner is low. Old ones would still print after giving the toner cartridge a shake even if the prints looked shitty.

Cort ,

Ugh, my 602 middle click is starting to go out at work. I have a 604 at home and it's just not the same

Cort ,

By a nickel you mean 5k/yr not .05c/hr right? Right?!

Cort ,

I think this was specific to tetrapods, though I don't know if there are any land vertebrates that aren't descendants of tetrapods.
