With this week's data, we're seeing plenty of Covid at all three county sites. Let's start with the West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant: the Sars-CoV-2 7-day rolling average more than doubled since last week. The last 7DRA number was calculated on 6/4.
WSPT is one of three King County(-ish) sewersheds in this dataset. You can find overviews, individual sewershed results, and a breakdown of variants for the state wastewater surveillance program, along with other metrics like case counts and hospitalizations for Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses, at https://doh.wa.gov/data-and-statistical-reports/diseases-and-chronic-conditions/communicable-disease-surveillance-data/respiratory-illness-data-dashboard#WasteWater. If you go to the page and click "learn more" in the statewide view tab, you can find out lots of details about how these data are calculated and how to interpret them. The dashboard gets updated every Wednesday (generally).
Note: when the state switched over to new data providers in September, they also removed the previous historical data from the graphical interface. That's because the two providers used different methodologies that made direct comparisons difficult. Unfortunately, it also removed valuable context for interpreting the results. So, keep in mind we're just seeing what happened in September 2023 until now.
For three decades, DJ Riz Rollins has been behind the DJ pulpit in clubs across Seattle as a venerated fixture at gay, hip-hop and electronic music dance parties. Regardless of what he's playing - whether it be funk, soul or house - whenever Riz is on deck, the dance floor turns into a place of communal liberation.
Today in Labor History June 1, 1981: Two Filipino longshore labor organizers, Domingo & Viernes, were assassinated in Seattle, Washington on orders of U.S.-backed dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In 1986, as a result of ongoing protests, President Ronald Reagan told Marcos to “cut and cut cleanly.” That evening, Marcos and his wife Imelda fled to Hawaii aboard a U.S. air force plane, after 20 years of rule, with an entourage of 90 people (mostly servants), with 22 crates of cash valued at $717 million, 300 crates of jewelry of unknown value, $4 million worth of unset precious gems, $200,000 in gold bullion, $1 million in Philippine pesos and deposit slips for $124 million in banks in the Cayman Islands. Plus, countless crates of shoes. The Marcos hold the Guinness record for the largest ever theft from a government. Today, their son, Bong Bong Marcos, rules over the Philippines, with Sara Duterte as his vice-president, daughter of the brutal previous president, Rodrigo Duterte, who has been linked to the death-squad murders of over 1,400 alleged drug dealers and street children.
Just popping up to share that we now have confirmed dates for the West Coast leg of my Lifehouse tour! It would make me beyond happy to see you on August 1st at Elliott Bay in Seattle (w/Dean Spade!), August 3rd at Page Against the Machine in Long Beach, August 6th at Green Apple’s 9th Ave store in San Francisco, or August 8 at Powell's in Portland – and hopefully break bread with you afterward. Feel free to share with anyone you think might be interested! #mutualaid#climate#anarchism#books
Oh, and a very important follow-up request for folks in #Seattle, #Portland, the #BayArea and the #LA basin: if you work with or know of any #mutualaid efforts that would like to present themselves to my audience, set out literature, etc., please let me know as soon as possible. It’s my great hope to use each one of these book talks to share a little bit of shine with local organizers in every city I’ll be visiting. 👊
The West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant Sars-CoV-2 7-day rolling average continues to bounce around the levels its been at for weeks, with maybe a very slight uptick that’s hard to see on this graph. The last 7DRA number was calculated on 5/14.

Both the Seattle Times and KUOW are running big stories today about the just released Bumbershoot lineup. That’s cool, but Bumbershoot is months away.
This weekend is the Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center with tons of live music and arts available for your cultural enrichment. They don’t sell tickets but do ask for a donation on entry. Full schedule here:
Along with my two other friends, I'm hosting a West Seattle Pop-Up Plant Sale on the Sunday (5/26) of Memorial Day Weekend! Stop by from 10am-2pm to snag indoor and outdoor plants. Lots of parking, near transit, and around the corner from the West Seattle Farmer's Market.
If you find yourself in the greater Seattle-Tacoma area this weekend and you're interested in cool plants, come to Blue Poppy Day at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden. Meconopsis 'lingholm', the Himalayan blue poppy, is renowned for its incredible color--and is famously difficult to grow. This place has just the right conditions, and they have thousands! They also have hundreds of species of rhodies in bloom. #gardening #bloomScrolling #PNW #seattle #Tacoma https://rhodygarden.org/events/blue-poppy-day-2024/
#Aurora last night from 30 min east of #Seattle. Absolutely stunning for hours! Such an amazing shared experience we all got to have (irl and as a shining example of the global #mastodon community). 💚🩷💜♥️
Oh no, the #UW#Seattle encampment might get attacked tomorrow.
This is a crappy piece of "guidance" from UW administration, saying basically "we asked the fash nicely not to beat up kids, but they say they're still coming, and we asked the encampment to leave, and they won't either, so I guess both sides, and maybe don't show up on the quad"
If they were hoarding anything but wealth we'd recognize how pathological it is but NO we put them on the covers of magazines & kiss their asses
🤦🏻♀️ #smfh
Joe Biden is holding a fundraiser tonight in Seattle in an hour(4PM today). Joe tried to be sneaky and didn't release his itenerary until the last minute today.
