After re-upping here recently to stay in touch with an old friend, I also logged on to Bluesky again. And there I said,

It’s such a weird phenomenon, this oversaturation of social media community options. Like, we all had a nice thing that then wasn’t so nice anymore, and the resulting diaspora has both reinvigorated some conversations and robbed us from others.

I guess I agree with @futurebird: this feels like a time in history when finding your people is paramount.

My 18 year old cat likes to curl up, knead me like a kitten. But she does not like to be observed doing this, she waits until I'm asleep.

This is when I dream about something soft & humming & a little prickly burrowing into me. "I suppose this is my fate" I think in the dream. And I'm happy that being excavated isn't as unpleasant as I thought it would be.

But, then later there is silky fur under my half-awake hand: in a haze I see a cat stop & pretend to be cleaning her paw.

I don’t buy the theory that psilocybin somehow caused human civilization to develop. My issues:

  1. How could something used only by a few even today have such a big impact?
  2. Some people find themselves in altered states naturally; why are the mushrooms needed?
  3. is this solving a “problem” that doesn’t exist? It’s not mysterious it took time for complex societies to form. Life is hard, full of set backs. Couldn’t it be for once the weather was nice & not everyone got eaten by bears?

@futurebird this just reminded me of the multitude of brilliant story ideas and worldbuilding snippets you used to post on twitter. I hope you saved your archive!

Part of the fun and what I love about keeping ant colonies is how you, with your big brain and fancy tools will be fully challenged to keep them contained, entertained and happy. If there is a way out, they will find it, if there is a way to exploit a new object? They will solve it. All it takes is one ant to stumble on "pile sand grains on top of the water feeder and it will slowly push up the lid" and they will be out.

But then they don't even go anywhere. They do it just because they can.

@futurebird just for you, my friend. I’ve looked for you on Bluesky and Signal and tried every old email over the years… I am so SO glad you reached out.
Comics Twitter tried Mastodon for about a minute, then moved to Bluesky, mostly. And then I got overwhelmed with keeping up socially and ignored everything/one for awhile.

@futurebird Agreed on all accounts. Damn, I’ve missed you.
