I left code debugging behind when I left grad school. But I found something similar in civil engineering: Quality Analysis and Quality Control (QA/QC).

I was reading one of my Japanese graded readers (stories for language learners) on the flight (since even in my 40s, being strapped into a seat is a great homework aid), and I accidentally replied to the flight attendant bringing around food in Japanese.

I may now have started an irrevocable chain of events where I’m not addressed in English again for the whole trip 😨

All I wanted was a normal book on Arthropleura. All I found was... this.

Listen everyone loves a giant millipede... but I think some of these book mills have misunderstood what that means...

At least they used one of the reconstructions with a correctly sized head. And no silly jaws or anything. Arthropleura was a herbivore.

(A whole book on Arthropleura was too much to hope for. I'll need to go back to collecting papers.)

I’ve bought a cheerful lime green basket for my exercise bike, so I can drop my controllers into it when cycling through the virtual worlds of holofit! It also takes my phone which is handy, as I often listen to an audiobook at the same time, lose track and have to hit the 30s rewind button 😅 (Also, yes, much entertainment is needed to get me onto a bike with any regularity…!)

That's clever. I certainly understand. I finally worked out biking by watching Star Wars cartoons on a big screen with subtitles by experimentation. It was the right level of visual detail and plot.

For my talks, I draw a lot of my slide deck, with several slides used to illustrate a concept. I love the result: it's engaging and pretty, and I feel people remember images faster than words.

However.... it takes me bloody ages!

I've been designing two talks with a large number of new slides and it's taken me about a 1.5 weeks to get them together as each talk is close to 100 slides (~2 slides / min).

It's hard to justify this quantity of time to work, but it's also why I'm asked to speak 🤔

A second example slide, comparing the atmospheric content of the Earth and Mars.

In 80s music, I'm always going to mention "That's All" by Genesis.

I did not get Phil at all when I was a teen hearing his two albums that we all later learned were about his marriage falling apart (hello also "Tunnel of Love" by The Boss).

Forward 20 years. This song hit like a truck in the wrong lane when I ran into some trouble later on life and heard it one random radio moment.

E-bikes are very cool and I'm glad they are getting popular.

However.

There is a big difference between a crash at 12mph and one at 20mph.

Your ebike can give you injuries normally only found in motorcycle accidents. And there isn't enough advice on what constitutes sufficient maintenance for ebikes.

If you don't get balding tires fixed on a regular bike you could fall off and bruise or break a leg.

At ebike speeds that same fall will shatter your leg in dozens of pieces.

I’m listening to “Wideacre”; historical fiction by Philippa Gregory.

The protagonist is evil. An utter psychopath. Admittedly, life for a woman in the 18th century is rough, and the opportunities Beatrice’s skills warrant are passed to incompetent men. But the body count is unpleasant!

It’s a very long book and a stressful read. Frankly, I want to stop but I also want to know the outcome and I’m not sure a synopsis will be satisfactory.

In short, I’m in a hostage situation with an audiobook.

    I admit there is something in my head that goes a bit softer - a failure of my capability to judge both situations the same as I should.
    I find myself feeling bad for both of them where, when it's a male authority figure, I simply have felt disgusted and felt no inkling of compassion for him.

    This is a far cry from the comments you related here, though. That's just gross. This kid is likely going to have trauma and challenges with intimacy for the rest of his life.
