Another mound of the same red-stemmed feather moss, this time with sprigs of redwood sorrel growing amongst it. The sorrel has small stems and clover-like leaves growing down.

A very slender young tree sapling covered in the same light green feathers moss. The sun is behind, making the sapling itself dark but the moss bright, and in the background we also see the sun highlighting some other mosses with sprigs of redwood sorrel growing amongst them. The sorrel is out of focus but catches the eye because of the brilliant green.

I still ID moss as just...moss. I have no idea how to tell them apart, and neither does iNaturalist because it was telling me some weird stuff with this photo.

Macro photo of a Brood XIX Cicada

A macro photo of a Brood XIX cicada sitting on moss covered pavement. The pavement is about 50% covered in moss, it's beautiful. The cicada is facing towards the left, angled slightly away from the photographer. Their wings are beautiful and translucent with black lines segmenting them, which transition to orange the closer they get to the body of the Cicada. Their head is a dark bluish black, with big bulbous red eyes. Their legs are the same shade of orange as the front of their wings.

    Found on a morning walk: urban mosses.

    Kleine grüne Sporen mit roten Stängeln auf einem Moosbett. Die Schärfe in der Nahaufnahme liegt auf dem Moos, der Hintergrund ist unscharf. Im Vordergrund ist noch etwas grauer Mauerbeton zu erkennen. Small green spores with red stems on a bed of moss. The focus in the close-up is on the moss, the background is blurred. Some gray wall concrete can still be seen in the foreground.

    Portraits of some of the recent lichens I've met. My guesses as to IDs:

    • Flavoparmelia caperata
    • A nice moss that looks like asparagus tips, with Xanthoria parietina & physcia adscendens (?) growing through / around it
    • Parmotrema, physcia & candelariella
    • Caloplaca species

    Great hike at Big Tree Ridge on Cougar Mountain last weekend. Little one did well on most of the trail, with some rides on yours truly's shoulders
