I guess I’m getting into bryology now. If only I could identify them now. 5 semesters of botany and the moss is “just moss”.

#linux gang, what is your opinion of Pop!OS? I'm uninstalling windows on my gaming laptop as it usually happens some time after I get it pre-installed on a new device. It has an Nvidia card and I usually play light indie games or older ones that I tested on Linux and run just fine. The heaviest game I might play is #baldursgate3 and the other Larian games, as well as D2 resurrected.

A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching: Getting to Know the World's Most Misunderstood Bird by Rosemary Mosco. 5/5

A fun read, recommended by bookstodon that I gobbled in two days! A basic overall introduction to pigeons with fun facts and cute illustrations. From history to anatomy, it really deepened my interest in this otherwise common but fascinating bird.

I've always liked them and had a couple of rescues in my lifetime. This book made me like them even more haha

Yes, the book does touch on them being an invasive species and we're the ones to blame. There was a paragraph about the tragedy of the passenger pigeon and the dodo so that was a new thing I learned. The book does not encourage breeding and even discourages feeding them in cities because we have enough it is.

As an European reader their invasiveness wasn't my main concern. Where I'm from other columbids suffer more from humans shooting them (especially wood pigeons) than from competition with feral rock doves.

@bookstodon I'm in a pigeon mood. Could you recommend me books about pigeons? Non-fiction preferred but fiction including accurate facts about columbine birds is also welcome!

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

4.5/5

I saw this on bookstodon and it was the cover that grabbed me. The story was even better - the dark vibes, the illustrations, the world building using the annotations, the characters, the feeling of despair and impending doom... Yeah. The ending was really satisfying, bummer I took so long to read it (that's a "me" issue, not the book's fault). Also that prompted me to read more about starlings. Amazing birds, one could say the parrots of the Old World.

My only gripe with this book is how the main characters are "ugly". They're not. They're beautiful. Or maybe I didn't interpret it correctly and it's how they're perceived by the others with their more obvious cosmetic flaws. Either way I loved the book.
