What's wrong with moss in a lawn? Why are we supposed to get rid of it? I'll have it. Send me your moss. Send me all the moss.

I had some pots that weren’t doing anything, so I did a “dump it out and look”. Mostly things were growing but slowly. Two had literally nothing except moss on top. I’m pretty sure it was intentional rather than attrition. Moss is cool?

This has been your Chaos Gardening update.

Hello, ! I am a desert-dweller, so never expected to be blessed with some mosses, but check out this beauty that came home with me in a plant I bought yesterday!

I finally made the trek to meet Bruunidun. She’s a giant making her home next to Puget Sound in Lincoln Park in West Seattle. Idun is playing a troll sized flute to call home native .

Go ! And trolls!

    Help me and folks…

I thought I had read some article a while back (within last 5 years?) that was challenging the concept of lichen as a “pioneer species” for breaking down bare rock.

    Am I just imagining this?

A very fine morning in north Georgia. If you want, I can show you the tidily dismembered squirrel we found.

19/04/2024 - Friday evening visit to Bennachie. A few mosses we saw on the way up. There were a lot! Really good fun trying to id them. Very tricky.

    I think we saw

    Five-ranked Bogmoss
    Common Haircap Moss
    Juniper Haircap Moss
    Northern Peatmoss

Common Haircap Moss. Tall for a moss. Green and spikey.
Juniper Haircap Moss. This one is tiny. Green moss with a brown centre.
Northern Peatmoss. Red carpet of moss.

Just some trumpet cup lichen (Cladonia fimbriata) growing on a cobblestone I salvaged from Thomas Street during the construction of the REI Flagship store back in 1994. This is a common lichen here west of the Cascades. Grows on just about any substrate - wood, bark, soil, asphalt, roofing, fiberglass, brick, and in this photo a street cobblestone probably Wilkeson sandstone.
