I had some pots that weren’t doing anything, so I did a “dump it out and look”. Mostly things were growing but slowly. Two had literally nothing except moss on top. I’m pretty sure it was intentional rather than attrition. Moss is cool?

I finally made the trek to meet Bruunidun. She’s a giant making her home next to Puget Sound in Lincoln Park in West Seattle. Idun is playing a troll sized flute to call home native .

A forest floor, dotted with large moss-covered rocks, and covered with fallen leaves and branches. A tree that fell in a storm years ago was sawed to clear the trail, leaving a long stump angled up from the ground. Since then, a split opened along the bottom, looking like a mouth, and shelf fungi have grown, looking like two eyes, one slightly larger than the other. I did not add the stick in the crack that looks like a cigar hanging from it's mouth, but salute the person who did. "Let me tell you, kid" it seems to be saying. Penny's Preserve, Blue Hill, Maine

    I thought I had read some article a while back (within last 5 years?) that was challenging the concept of lichen as a “pioneer species” for breaking down bare rock.

    Am I just imagining this?

    Moss growing on a drainage grate. The moss is growing in puffy blobs on the sides of the grate.
    Some moss but mostly light green lichen is growing on a rock.

    19/04/2024 - Friday evening visit to Bennachie. A few mosses we saw on the way up. There were a lot! Really good fun trying to id them. Very tricky.

    Tree that was probably growing over top of downed log which is now completely gone.
    Some type of polypore? White rounded shelf like fungus on dead (standing) tree trunk
    Two trees that had shallow roots on rocky, mossy terrain and finally knocked over in winter weather

    A little’un for

    Photo of a smallish waterfall tumbling down a wooded hillside through mossy granite boulders. Ferns sprout from the ground, still scattered with fallen brown leaves, and on and between the rocks. The trees all around are greening up but blue sky is just visible through the branches at the top of the slope. To the below right of centre, a large clump of ferns marks the edge of a footpath over which the stream also flows before falling again to the river below and out of shot. The little stream is swollen by much recent rain, making it more than a hop-skip over on the path.

    The cutest window box I’ve ever seen – exclusively full of moss – in front of a shop on the main street in Saranac Lake.

    Another view of the mossy window box, with lots of clarity and detail on the sporophytes. They sprout from the green moss at the bottom, and their stems are bright red, and the tips are yellow-green – almost like a three-striped flag. We see some out-of-focus buildings and a car in the background.
    One more view of the window box, looking up from the soil level. Again, we see the spongy green moss on dark soil, with waves of red sporophytes with green caps. Above, we see blue sky and white clouds, as well as their reflection in the shop window.

    Just some trumpet cup lichen (Cladonia fimbriata) growing on a cobblestone I salvaged from Thomas Street during the construction of the REI Flagship store back in 1994. This is a common lichen here west of the Cascades. Grows on just about any substrate - wood, bark, soil, asphalt, roofing, fiberglass, brick, and in this photo a street cobblestone probably Wilkeson sandstone.

    Seen on Baker Mountain in the Adirondacks.

    Looking up a large stone face of a hillside covered in a variety of mosses, different shades of green and different textures. We see and hear a water drip. The camera pans down and to the left to show some of the extent of the moss.
