Well yes, I could have a pristine lawn, but then I wouldn't make discoveries like this wee cutie in there.

This woodchip pile just keeps giving, I've seen a few lovely fungi friends emerge from it now. Today it was the turn of these wavy wonders.

A top down view of a crinkly crop of fungi. The fungi is light beige and looks like cracked eggshells. It's emerging in waves from a pile of light brown woodchips.

I'm going to miss mushroom season in NZ this year, having jumped straight from early Autumn to a northern hemisphere Spring.

Here's a clump of Inky Caps from last year that I never got around to tooting...

Scarlet Elf Cups! Slightly nibbled but not by me, although apparently(?) you can eat these, which I did not expect xD

These were everywhere, covering logs and the mossy ground. At a distance I assumed they were bottle caps or discarded orange peel, then close up they look red candle wax shaped into tiny bowls for magical creatures.

Another perfectly round, slightly nibbled red bowl nestled in the moss and twigs

After planting ramp starts for a few hours I started hiking home, keeping an eye peeled for morels. I almost walked past this devil's urn (Urnula craterium) in my morel frenzy. Glad I didn't.

Washington Post: Using AI to spot edible mushrooms could kill you

"Now, a new assortment of AI-powered mushroom identifiers are popping up in the Apple, Google and OpenAI app stores. These tools use artificial intelligence to analyze photos or descriptions of mushrooms and compare them to known varieties....With its high stakes and frequent mess-ups, mushroom identification is a bad candidate for automation, but companies are doing it anyway..."
