I got three mushroom growing kits from up the road. I hope they work, it being winter and it’s cold. They’re in a heated area of the house (front hallway outside my office) 1. Lions Mane 2. Elms Oyster 3. King Oyster. Wish me luck.

16/06/2024 - Today we met a Blusher mushroom on our travels. Whilst taking a quick snap I noticed ants moving underneath it, carrying larvae. What a magic thing to watch.

I took a video on my little camera, it's a bit fuzzy as these ants are small and my knees weren't that happy with the bending down. Plenty grumps getting back up again!

Another nine days. You can see the mushrooms flattening slightly and getting dramatically darker.

Same tree and mushrooms from the first photo but now it is 9 days later and the mushrooms have flattened and doubled in size. Less blubby and more plate like. The previous golden yellow has darkened to caramel brown and the white edges have yellowed. The bottoms are still white.

Seven large, flat shelf mushrooms growing out of a standing, dead hemlock. The largest is bigger than my outstretched hand. The tops of the mushrooms and where they attach to the tree are amber brown and they lighten as they get closer to the edge with yellow being the final color. At the base of the tree is a bright green carpet of moss. In the background are green shrubs, ground cover and larger trees.

    For , a few alternate shots of mushrooms I’ve found over the last few weeks.

    1. Split Gills [Schizophyllum commune]
    2. Swamp Beacons [Mitrula elegans]
    3. Varnish Shelf [Ganoderma tsugae]
    4. Chicken [Laetiporus sulphureus]

    Closeup of 4 inch water and muck in a bog. Growing up out of a bog are 2 mushrooms that look like matchsticks or Q-tips. The base are dirty white sticks with a bright yellow-orange blob on the top. Each is about 2 inches high. The top of the bog has a glass or ice appearance with dark mounds where the mushrooms come up.

Each has a band of colors - closest to the attachment on the tree is a shiny maroon, then dark orange, then lighter shades of orange, then gold, then yellow and finally white. The mushrooms are about seven inches big and only the top can be seen. At the base of the tree is a carpet of green moss and the tip of my shoe.
    Several outcroppings of orange cauliflower like mushrooms growing from a dead tree. Each clump ranges from about 5 inches high to 10 inches. In the background are hemlock trees.

    I've finished sculpting and painting two more , although the photos don't adequately capture their 3-dimensionality!

    A 4-panel figure depicting 2 mushrooms sculpted from Milliput (epoxy resin) and painted with acrylic, and the 2 original mushroom photos which inspired the sculptures. Depicted are 1. Turkey-Tail consisting of several brown striped clusters of shelves; and 2. Non-Inky Coprinus which are delicate off-white mushrooms in which their gills make them appear vertically-striped. Sculpted mushrooms are on wood backings, and the Non-Inky Coprinus is emerging from green moss.

    Some cute little mushrooms growing in the side of an old tree stump. Makes me think of a little mossy cave that the mushrooms live in, and they're peering out from the front to see if it's raining...

    Fairy rings are caused by an individual fungus growing underground. The fungus sprouts lots of small threads, called mycelium, in a circular shape. When it is time to fruit the mushrooms pop up out of the ground at the edge of the circle, creating the fairy ring.

    Little drawings on brown paper... artist's quality of course, I don't mean old grocery bags! The colour really helps me to bring out the lights and darks and gives a nice simple and clean background.

    After the rain. This cute little grouping is just too easy to anthropomorphize.

    Three mushrooms surrounded by cedar and other leaf debris. They have beige stalks and dark beige caps. They don't appear to have gills. The back left one is tallest, and the back right one is also pretty tall, and the one in front is much shorter and is leaning to the left. It looks like a little kid with two parents.
