Another nine days. You can see the mushrooms flattening slightly and getting dramatically darker.

Same tree and mushrooms from the first photo but now it is 9 days later and the mushrooms have flattened and doubled in size. Less blubby and more plate like. The previous golden yellow has darkened to caramel brown and the white edges have yellowed. The bottoms are still white.

Seven large, flat shelf mushrooms growing out of a standing, dead hemlock. The largest is bigger than my outstretched hand. The tops of the mushrooms and where they attach to the tree are amber brown and they lighten as they get closer to the edge with yellow being the final color. At the base of the tree is a bright green carpet of moss. In the background are green shrubs, ground cover and larger trees.

    A very large tree stump in an old growth forest. The trunk has broken off the base of the stump about 10 feet above the ground. The forest floor behind the stump is now exposed to sunlight and a small patch of ferns are illuminated on the right of the stump. Small mushrooms and moss and ferns adorn the base of the stump.

    I've finished sculpting and painting two more , although the photos don't adequately capture their 3-dimensionality!

    A 4-panel figure depicting 2 mushrooms sculpted from Milliput (epoxy resin) and painted with acrylic, and the 2 original mushroom photos which inspired the sculptures. Depicted are 1. Turkey-Tail consisting of several brown striped clusters of shelves; and 2. Non-Inky Coprinus which are delicate off-white mushrooms in which their gills make them appear vertically-striped. Sculpted mushrooms are on wood backings, and the Non-Inky Coprinus is emerging from green moss.

    These wonderful little Q-tip sprouty things are Swamp Beacon [Mitrula elegans] mushrooms, and up until yesterday I had never found one. In fact they aren’t listed in many of my guides or fungi websites I visit. They mostly grow on fallen conifer needles IN BOGS… so you can see why they don’t get a lot of press!

    Closeup of 4 inch water and muck in a bog. Growing up out of a bog are 7 mushrooms that look like matchsticks or Q-tips. The base are dirty white sticks with a bright yellow-orange blob on the top. Each is about 2 inches high. The top of the bog has a glass or ice appearance with dark mounds where the mushrooms come up.
