Oakland Animal Services, where I got Benson, is having an open adoptathon! They need to free up some room in their kennels and these dogs have been in the shelter a while.
It's been about a year and a half on my journey with #mastodon and the #sfba.social instance. Here's my thoughts so far:
The moderators on my instance are doing a tremendous job keeping it clean and inviting.
Following hashtags has been a great easy way to see posts about topics I'm interested in, however I dislike people spamming their posts with every hashtag and those posts making it into my feed.
Adoption is still not where I thought it would be and I miss not having my personal connections on here.
Mainstream social media platforms like #Facebook and #Twitter first got users on there and then the big media platforms followed to get access to the users. I wish that would happen for mastodon too. Once we get the majority of the people on here, it will become a more natural place for discourse. Currently it still feels like a small group of people that are not connected to the rest of the world.
We are thinking hard about the non-profit we want to start to fund #sfba services. (After OCF’s shutdown announcement this has become our number one priority.)
If you know of online communities that run such a model successfully, please give us a hint!
If you have ideas about things to consider when planning non-profit memberships, governance, votings, etc. please tell!
We want to keep overhead low, so we can focus on our community and don’t get buried in bureaucracy. We want to continue focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area.
It’s a miserable day to be outside in SF, which makes me worry for our neighbors who have nowhere to be but outside. Asked around and there’s this mutual aid effort a friend of a friend is involved in! SFNeighbors on Venmo for contributions. #sfba#sfStorm
