"We know from medical and social science research...criminalizing homelessness is bad public policy. Driving homeless people further into the justice system does not reduce homelessness. [It] deepens the problem by destabilizing individuals and families, driving unsheltered people into more desperate and unhealthy conditions to avoid punishment."

Just saw a floor plan that made me cringe. Either UCI's graduate housing has a "typo" or they have some apartments with a split bathroom such that the sink is in a different room than the toilet and shower.

Split bathroom's are fine, but the split needs to be sink and toilet in one room and shower in the other. Otherwise, eww...

@SRLevine toilet in one room, and both sink and shower in the other, is a very common setup in old San Francisco apartments

Sign the petition to save the Richmond–San Rafael bridge bike path! https://secure.everyaction.com/2A3aX75jUkSrTH6pp2-zog2

Yes, MTC voted to recommend closing it on weekdays, and that's bad, but the Bay Conservation and Development Commission would have to actually approve this - and we have a better shot there because their mandate is to ensure public access to the bay.

Incredible example of lying with graphs from Caltrans. The bike lane pilot on the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge reduced collisions, but they made it look like collisions increased.

Specifically, they divided collisions by vehicle miles traveled. But California's goal is to reduce vehicle miles traveled. So they took two good things achieved by the pilot, and made them cancel out to look like a bad thing.

Screenshot of the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom's website listing things called for by a climate plan, including: Light-duty vehicle miles traveled (VMT) target of 25% per capita below 1990 levels by 2030

Really I'm of the view that a hard fork of mastodon is (probably) not the right solution, but it's likely my view on that is for different reasons than a lot of other people who have talked about it (and also substantially similar in some respects, but with some core differences).

But if you want to do the work and it energizes you then go forth. It just seems to be more hassle than I suspect it will be worth versus just building a ground-up implementation (which is already plenty of work).

@hrefna I admin a server based on one of the existing forks (Hometown)

It has one single maintainer, who has been too busy with other projects to update it, so we're stuck with the feature set of Mastodon 4.0, while 4.2 is out and 4.3 about to come out with many improvements. Thankfully, said maintainer did find time to quickly backport critical security patches, but I'm beginning to wish we had just stuck with vanilla.

it might seem weird to toot this from carfree dot city, but go VW auto workers!

would i rather they were making buses and trains and e-bikes?—obviously, but as long as there are cars, the people who make them damn well deserve a union. labor is entitled to all it creates

Reviving the War on Drugs in SF is not going great: "the crackdowns have[n't] prevented overdose fatalities, reduced street violence, [or] improved neighborhood conditions... At best, enforcement strategies have improved some blocks at the expense of others, while creating turf wars that have increased gun violence. We need to use a comprehensive strategy with evidence-based solutions." - @deanpreston

what if we hired way more police, except they were unarmed, trained to drive buses, and their sole responsibility was operating buses? kinda think this smart public safety idea has been overlooked

I am strongly considering moving away from Mastodon in the medium to long term future because of Eugen's absolutely abysmal handling of the spam situation and lack of prioritization of proper mod tooling.

It’s a miserable day to be outside in SF, which makes me worry for our neighbors who have nowhere to be but outside. Asked around and there’s this mutual aid effort a friend of a friend is involved in! SFNeighbors on Venmo for contributions.
