I was thinking of getting an air fryer, but I was missing additional applications. I think you might have convinced me.

scrion , (edited )

I'd also decrease the damage a bit if actually used as a bludgeoning weapon.

scrion ,

Couldn't watch, so I got a summary. Maybe it's helpful for someone else:

  • Bluefin is introducing a new "Stable" tag for their Fedora distribution, in addition to the existing "GTS" (Grand Touring Support) and "Latest" tags.

  • The Stable tag will provide a middle ground between the aggressively updated Latest Fedora and the more conservative GTS version.

  • Stable will use the latest Fedora release, but with a slightly older kernel that has been more thoroughly tested and vetted by the Bluefin team.

  • This is intended to cater to enthusiasts who want the latest Fedora features, but with a bit more stability and reliability.

  • Bluefin will be publishing weekly updates for the Stable images, rather than waiting 2 weeks between updates like the Fedora CoreOS team.

  • The Stable images will also use zstd chunked compression to reduce the amount of bandwidth needed for updates.

  • Bluefin is unsure whether the Stable configuration (latest Fedora, slightly older kernel) or the GTS configuration (older Fedora, latest kernel) will ultimately feel more stable in practice

  • The Stable tag is a response to user feedback requesting access to the latest Fedora releases, rather than having to wait for the GTS version.

  • Nvidia driver updates for the Stable images will also be provided on a regular basis.

  • Bluefin is interested in exploring this middle ground between aggressively updated and conservatively updated Fedora distributions.

I don't care if they participated in a satanic ritual, Christian mass or if they summoned Yog-Sothoth, that has nothing to do with school, there should be no way for people to be expelled for something like that. And to top it off, it was a fucking dance ceremony.

At the time, her private school’s teachers were mostly white people who would often discuss the satanic nature of Apache traditions

Jesus fucking Christ...

scrion ,

That's not how it works in most places, working hours are fixed and breaks are typically mandated by law anyway, so you don't get to go home early just because you skipped lunch.

Plus, a healthy and tasty meal, subsidized by the employer, certainly beats me shopping for the ingredients and cooking when it comes to price and time invested. An actual problem is rather having access to a place that provides food like that.

Hey it's me, Jeromy Gride. I'm dying.

scrion ,

However, because the Catholic Church has not allowed removal of any portion of the skull for dating, the year of the woman's death has not been determined as of 2024.

🙄

scrion ,

You can be angry about both things, the world isn't black and white. Leave the fucking stones alone and blow up corporate headquarters for all I care.

scrion ,

Yes, makes total sense. Fatherverse sounds fine to me.

scrion , (edited )

lspci will read the vendor and device id via PCI and use that to determine what the device is. You might want to make the output a bit more digestable / useful via lspci -s 03:00.0 -k -nn, but I'd assume the ids that match an 2070 will show up.

Could you please take the card out and provide us with a few pictures from different angles, maybe getting a good look at the actual chips?

I'd like to rule that out before chasing rabbits here.

Also, you could always run nvidia-settings, which will show information about an NVIDIA card using a different access method.

I'd still like to see the pictures of the card though ;)

scrion ,

It's absolutely overkill for many applications, with its integrated fuse, and that's why I love it. It is indeed objectively best.

scrion ,

We'll get along just fine. But I will remember the kid's face if they're cool.

scrion ,

Do yourself a favor and order those filters ASAP. This stuff creeps up on you and before you know, you're wheezing like crazy walking up 3 steps. Or you skip that step and go directly to the cancer stage.

I have been around a few of cases like this and man does it suck to see it happen. I moved shops and now have an easily accessible spot for PPE, literally no effort to grab a mask, protective glasses, whatever. It makes all the difference.

scrion ,

Really all of them? Camel fur? Natural latex? Lyocell? Sheep wool? Pinus cembra shreds? Horse hair? Kapok?

All I want to say is: there is a whole world of relatively unknown pillow stuffings available. This is mostly useful for people with very particular requirements or allergies.

I tried all the regular ones (cotton, different grains, down feathers) plus camel fur, latex and Kapok. Latex was great, durability was mediocre compared to the price though. Kapok became flat pretty fast.

I arrived at the same conclusions as you did: shredded foam. I'd go with natural latex, which has about the same properties and can be manufactured in an eco-friendly, sustainable fashion, but that led to me spending $120 on a pillow that didn't last a third as long as a foam pillow for $22.

Edit: I'm also biased because I want my pillow to be washable. That helps with all kinds of allergies, plus the dirt you see coming out of the pillow... Jesus.

scrion ,

See, that's what I wanted to say. I had no idea such a thing existed - you learn something new every day. From what I just read now it's a synthetic gel core with a polyester case that has somehow been coated with Aloe Vera extract?

Is that what you are referring to? If so, I'd definitely like to try the gel core, but I'm not at all convinced as far as the case is concerned - the coating would wash out anyway, and I hate Polyester with a passion.

Taking out the gel core and replacing the case with cotton or linen is something that would I try though.

scrion ,

You'll be even more disappointed when you find out that "Aloe Vera Microfiber" is indeed coated polyester, with a few percent of Aloe Vera extract:

https://www.comatex.cz/en/fabrics/aloe-vera-microfiber-fabric/

http://www.azyhometextile.com/sale-polyester-peach-skin-aloe-vera-microfiber-fabrics-57485532.html

Honestl, I'm equally disappointed - I was keen to learn about a previously unknown fiber.

scrion ,

Love it. I assume this was created with some app filter?

scrion ,

There is a ton of ways to solve this, but I believe what might help you the most is a tool that allows you to a) solve these kinds of problems repeatedly, with variations in the setup and b) helps you re-learn the basic math.

Therefore, I suggest you setup your problem in Geogebra:

https://www.geogebra.org/math/angles

You can introduce an interactive slider to vary one or more parameters (e. g. extension of the linear rod) and immediately read all other values, like lengths and distances.

This article answers most of the questions I had when looking up the Cantarini weapons after reading the original post:

Glamour to ghost town: the fate of one Cypriot beach resort – in pictures ( www.theguardian.com )

Once a glamorous destination that attracted the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Abba, the Cypriot resort of Varosha was abandoned on 14 August 1974 when Turkey invaded. For 50 years, the town has been deserted, but in 2020 it was opened up to tourists.

scrion ,

The article says it has partially re-opened in 2020. Has anyone visited recently? Any updates?

scrion ,

Question is, is this KNORRIG, or a completely different pig?

scrion ,

The artist / writer literally mentions their joke in the bonus panel and they'd "die if they stopped being funny".

The funny part is supposed to be: my wife is single.

scrion ,

I was confused too, but the blog mentions his pronouns as he/him, so that's the interpretation I also arrived at.

scrion ,

That's actually close to a regular working day. 4-5h of core work, 2h of correspondence (e. g. Zoom meetings, bullshit emails), 1h of various breaks, e. g. lunch. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

[Somewhat solved] NES outputs 4.6V on controller port instead of 5V which prevents Blueretro from functioning properly

EDIT: Thanks everyone for you help, that has been very instructive. I think I just have a very poor quality cable adapter. Given that Blueretro is mostly an opensource DIY project, I’ll make a cable adapter myself instead of trying to fix what would obviously not function properly....

scrion ,

Let me chime in with a few thoughts, can't go into full detail since I'm currently traveling and on my phone:

  1. It should be possible to power the BlueRetro using the controller port only. IIRC, the controller pins providing power are directly connected to the internal NES regulator, so with enough headroom to spare, you should be good to go. Eventually, this will depend on the firmware of the ESP-WROOM module used by the BlueRetro (max. current draw for the ESP32 should be around 250mA with all peripherals enabled and transmitting, I'd expect the BlueRetro to use quite a bit less in normal operation). That's also what the 8BitDo is doing, running at around 100mA.

If you look at YouTube videos, you'll also find one or two people running the BlueRetro directly off of the port.

  1. Where did you get the level shifter cable from?

  2. I'd also like to know the results of your voltage measurement in operation

  3. If push comes to shove and you decide to replace the LDO, the TLV1117LV made by TI would be a potential candidate, should be a drop-in replacement with better specs (price is about $0.30)

scrion ,

I don't see why this kind of behavior should be excused if exhibited by a company vs. an individual. Would you also not fault your friends "for trying" to be an asshole to you in day to day life? Are humans not making the strategic decisions for that company?

scrion ,

I just want to point out that, when browsing fragrances and sort from worst to best, you have to get to page 7of 18 to even reach "Moderate Hazard", so 30% of tested products were classified as "High Hazard".

This is consistent with information available elsewhere:
https://www.bcpp.org/resource/right-to-know-exposing-toxic-fragrance-chemicals-report

https://health.osu.edu/health/general-health/how-fragrances-affect-health

I was baffled that quite a few people were not aware of how harmful many fragrances are.

scrion ,

I would be honestly upset at the tragic death of the Tim the pencil.

scrion ,

It's a YouTube video, there is a high chance it will feature promotional content - which is fine, a good video is hard and often costly to make. If there are no financial incentives or at least ways to reimburse the creators, we could only rely on hobbyist documenting their efforts, which would not fulfill all requests and needs for content.

I would also not expect a written description of the ball in what is clearly meant to be an entertaining video.

That being said, I found the video pretty underwhelming. The ball is still impossible to construct and they get around that by simply constructing a completely different, geometric entity, which also happens to be a promotional feature foe the team making custom soccer balls.

I'm with you that the ratio of actual entertainment and promotional content feels off in the video. The guy was on Adam Savage's channel a while ago, building some kind of mirror/LED nested cube, which I found a much better introduction to what he is about than this video. Or maybe I don't actually like the guy that much and Savage canceled that out, who knows.

It's mostly to ensure that the potatoes are slowly heated amd therefore evenly cooked.

If we look here, which cites a likely source as being The Farmer's Almanac, they mention even heating, as well as the cell walls hardening by starting the vegetable in cold water. (I assume the FA is just some Facebook account, but I don't have an account and have blocked all FB related domains, so I can't chase the actual source that led to the propagation of this knowledge / image down any further).

However, I found the same information about cell walls in a book about cooking knowledge by Arthur Le Caisne, with the added bit that the hardening of the cell walls happens due to proteins. However, the conclusion there is to not start out carrots in cold water, since they'll get hard and stay hard after cooking then.

Both agree on the potatoes, though.

scrion ,

Of course it is. I am aware of the publication The Old Farmer's Almanac. However, since I can't check (and really have no interest to) I have to assume whatever page this links to is just some random Facebook account.

scrion ,

Roll a D20 for me please.

scrion ,

You start assembling an assortment of sticks, leaves and a hollow bird bone, patching holes with moss that has already started to turn slightly yellow which you picked from the side of a tree. Somehow, your thoughts veer off and you begin to wonder if you could find a larger bone to turn into a flute.

When you look down again at your creation, you start to curse under your breath - you got distracted and manufactured a copy of Windows ME.

I opened the door, and there you stood, with the most amazing eyes I’ve ever seen, and they took my breath away.

Since August of last year, I’ve been coming to terms with my divorce, being single, sharing custody of my two children, and starting over in a new home of my own. It wasn’t easy, and it’s been downright lonely sometimes, not having someone to talk to and share my thoughts with....

scrion ,

Exactly. I do not typically talk to my contractors on the phone for hours. I think it's fair to assume that this opens the door to at least try giving it a shot without breaking etiquette.

scrion ,

Your comment was not useless. I learned about a new podcast that I checked out, plus you got to talk about something you liked in a way that made me go look for the episode - haven't found it yet, but found some other, interesting things along the way.

scrion ,

Thanks, miss me with that stuff.

I don't understand how assaulting someone with a mix of chemicals that have long been proven to often carry serious health risks (e. g. https://www.bcpp.org/resource/right-to-know-exposing-toxic-fragrance-chemicals-report/ ) has become socially acceptable when it's not only a serious health risk, people are allergic to it and it's the equivalent of holding a Bluetooth speaker to someone's face and blasting a song at full volume.

scrion ,

I like that Lemmy is still small enough of a thing that Miez is now a well-known cat in these parts of the internet - at least I do recognize and remember Miez.

Get well soon!

scrion ,

You're right about the plastic, but just drop the enlightened snark.

As for pottery, forging, casting etc.: completely different processes, different requirements, "vibe" - may not be possible for OP (ever tried operating a forge in a New York city apartment?), might not be aligned with their skills / interests, financial situation etc.

So, what remains is the question: do you believe 3d printing with plastic should be outlawed or at least strongly regulated as a private hobby?

scrion ,

It is also worth mentioning that while maybe technically true, you'll have no issue getting those trainings in practice if you simply ask for them.

scrion ,

It's the excavation of Pompeji, after all.

scrion ,

That actually depends. Also, no one is forcing you to bread your chicken?

scrion ,

Yes, yes, you're right of course - if we're talking fried chicken exclusively.
