Just curious: Do you know of any sci-fi movies with alien spaceships in which the alien ship controls and stations don't fit the human body at all, to the point where they are totally unusable by humans?

There are some in MIB I think.
Any other?

nazokiyoubinbou ,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@Ailantd Could Farscape count? Humans were able to press the controls, but they were designed to be operated by the many limbed Navigator.

nazokiyoubinbou ,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@Ailantd Only in the most minimal form. Basically just enough to perform a really basic function. They couldn't really control the ship with it.

nazokiyoubinbou ,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@Ailantd I tried to find a picture for you, but it was surprisingly hard to search the Internet. The character's name is just "Pilot" (they sort of bond with the leviathan ships, so basically are dedicated at birth.) Pilot has four arms constantly doing things (so it would take two humanoids to even try to do the same stuff) but also has a connection to the ship able to feel and respond to it in a way that a humanoid wouldn't be able to reproduce. Obviously the connection is not so visible.

nazokiyoubinbou ,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@mattmaison @Ailantd I have a pet theory. I feel that when we make various scifis and imagine aliens and the like, more often than not, we are basically projecting ourselves in some form. Like if you take Star Trek, Vulcans are our more intelligent, logical sides, Klingons are our violent, warlike sides, etc etc.

This is obviously not universal, but I think it covers a surprising amount of ground.

@DecaturNature @futurebird @StillIRise1963 What I keep coming back to is that Trump has said multiple times he intends to form a "special task force" to arrest "illegals" without obeying laws like rights to trials/etc. To my mind it is very clear what this really means. I believe he plans to use arbitrarily declaring anyone he wants as "illegal" and just having the special task force arrest and imprison them solely on that basis. Essentially gestapo

I think stuff like this is leading to that

nazokiyoubinbou ,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@janisf @DecaturNature @futurebird @StillIRise1963 The "arbitrary" in my previous statement refers to that he won't even need to establish any actual reason to even believe they are in some way an immigrant or illegally so or anything like that, just declare it on a whim and therefore it is so.

But yes, others around him will quickly turn that into their own tool of destruction.

    Interesting. Can anyone test if this is a fluke.

    The other day I was complaining about youTube shorts until @mcc reminded me that I could replace

    /shorts/

    with

    /watch?v=

    and avoid it on my own videos. Since then I have uploaded videos and only ever looked at or shared the "/watch?v=" links. Now all of a sudden it's not forcing my short videos to be shorts anymore. It's just putting them in the normal list!

    Like they noticed the other links were not being used? A glimmer of hope?

    nazokiyoubinbou ,
    @nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

    @futurebird @mcc Given Youtube's algorithmic nature I do think this is distinctly possible. You were watching some shorts formerly because you thought you had to, so that was going into your history. Now they're moving back so it's starting to show more of what you're focusing on now.

    As a bit of a side note, IMO it's best to turn off and clear search history and manually control your watch history (remove anything you don't want feeding the algorithm.) This way its recommendations suck less

    It's always bothered me that when people adapt Kafka's Metamorphosis they depict Gregor Samsa as a roach. Cockroaches do not undergo metamorphosis. They are born as nymphs which are just smaller wingless versions of the adult form.

    Kafka writes that Gregor can only enjoy rotten food. Which also makes him not at all roach-like. Roaches strongly prefer fresh vegetables to rotten ones.

    I always imagined him as a beetle. Which implies that the man Gregor was a larvae for all his pre-bug life.

    What kind of entertainment are "Let's Play" series?

    It's a bit like a reality show, a bit like a how to program, a bit like a role playing game.

    Role Playing games are under-appreciated as art forms because they can't be easily mass distributed. I call them "collaborative story telling"

    The "Let's Play" is even more alien to the people who study great literature and movies.

    But they still should be engaged with as art, analyzed like art, valued like art. (preserved for history like art)

    I don't get the point of big streamers or pre-made completely non-interactive videos though. Without the interaction it's basically just a virtual TV show (which is already virtual anyway in its own way.) In such cases there are better forms

    But why is it "popular" ?

    nazokiyoubinbou ,

    @futurebird I wonder if it's just as simple as that it sounds nicer to their ears, lol. More likely it just elicits more positive responses from the humans.

    A “children’s book” about a cop who points his gun at everything because that’s the only thing he knows how to do.

    “Hello” said the hungry caterpillar. The police man pointed his gun at the caterpillar. The caterpillar squeaked and ran away. “I guess he won’t be my friend either” said the policeman sadly. He holstered his gun and walked further down the road still feeling so very alone.

    @futurebird It's like the active shooter drills. Painful that this exists and attempting a solution on the wrong side of the equation since our society refuses to address the correct side, yet really so necessary. All too literally necessary I'm afraid. 😔 Someone actually needs to write this.

    Most spiders couldn't hurt you at all, like not even give you a little itchy welt if they tried their very best, if they could overcome their very realistic fear of your massive size and exoskeleton crushing feet.

    That there are a few who get one over on us is the great exception. We are a terror to these little creatures.

    @futurebird @gretared Is it... safe for a cat to eat a spider?

    I know mine love to chase bugs, but I don't think they eat them. I've never seen them actually catch any though.

    @futurebird @gretared I see what you mean. Most probably are pretty harmless. I always worry though. I've found black widows in my parents' basement and under my own house before, but none inside. Yet. We also have brown recluses in this area to watch out for and those scare me a lot more in regards to a cat eating it.

    @nev @futurebird @gretared Well, I would imagine that stomach acids would negate a lot of venoms, but what about some of the trickier ones like the "brown recluse" spider? Their venom has that weird necrosis effect and I worry it could be dangerous even for a stomach.

    You might have noticed some people publish much longer posts than the usual 500 character limit. There are three ways this is possible:

    -The server owner has customised their Mastodon server's software to change the character limit

    -The server owner has installed a pre-customised version of Mastodon such as Glitch or Hometown

    -The server isn't running on Mastodon software at all, but something totally different such as Friendica, WordPress etc

    @FediTips I really do wish that the mainline Mastodon would allow more than 500 characters though. I understand that a limit was chosen for a reason and should exist, but it's so low it's very hard to complete a thought sometimes. The current system already does a sort of "collapse" where the bulk of the post past 500 characters is hidden until you click on those larger posts and that seems to work very well as a compromise.

    @potungthul @FediTips It's automatically on large posts as far as I know in the mainline Mastodon ource itself at this point. If you're not seeing it it may be your instance chooses not to do it. Though your guess is as good as mine.

    Unless you're defining wordy posts as anything that's bigger than you like.

    I don't even get this one. Naturally new food products should be carefully screened but this simply seems to be about ... being angry that someone else might not want to eat meat? Just thinking a product meets a need you don't share... so it should be banned?

    https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/24/what-is-lab-grown-meat-and-why-does-ron-desantis-want-to-ban-it-in-florida/

    @futurebird I think it might be a bit simpler than this. A lot of con artists, companies, etc have worked for a long time (since the 70s at least?) to convince people than anything that is less natural is bad and thus anything that pretends to be more natural is good. This is especially the whole thinking behind so called "organic" which is actually just terribly wasteful and no better (sometimes worse!) He may not even know why, but he's propping a huge industry that relies on ignorance.

    @futurebird One thing that really bugs me about all this is that even for completely non-vegan people who would gleefully attack animals for fun there is still value in lab-grown meats -- if nothing else there's the simple fact that they can be made more consistent and safer than real meat. It's very unlikely (unless purposefully introduced) they'd get salmonella or etc for example. Also can potentially require far far fewer resources.

    Honestly seems like a great solution going forward.
