I dunno. They say it’s “a Jeep thing”.

lettruthout ,

So yeah, it does turn out that pronouns matter.

lettruthout ,

Not the answer you're looking for but we just put a cap over our double chimney. Our area has terrible pollution problems and, although we liked having fires, we're happier not contributing to the area's bad air.

lettruthout ,

This feels like political theater.
Instead Big Oil should be prosecuted for profiting off the destruction of our environment. For years they knew what they were doing.

lettruthout ,

Right, can we next abide by the rulings of the ICC?

lettruthout ,

Yeah, I hope there's room for many more!

Workers assembling computer-driven robots and flow-forming machines at a new General Dynamics artillery ammunition factory in Mesquite...

...and...

Here, in the Pentagon’s first new major arms plant built since Russia invaded Ukraine...

So the NYT doesn't even try to pretend that General Dynamics and the Pentagon are not the same entity.

Use for excess clean energy at home

I have a 100 W rigid solar panel including a charge controller that I currently only use for camping to charge batteries (also useful in an emergency at home). It strikes me as a waste that I could be generating more clean energy with equipment that I already have, but I don't have anything in mind to use this energy for....

lettruthout ,

Awesome effort! If not done already, you may want to look into venting that outside box. I believe there are examples of the out gassing of enclosed lead-acid batteries causing corrosion of nearby metals. Hilarity ensued.

Houyhnhnms are a fictional race of intelligent horses described in the last part of Jonathan Swift's satirical 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels. The name is pronounced either /ˈhuːɪnəm/ or /ˈhwɪnəm/.[1] Swift apparently intended all words of the Houyhnhnm language to echo the neighing of horses.

🎶 A horse is a horse, of course, of course..

Maybe "Are Trying to Silence" would be closer to the truth.

These Teens Adopted an Orphaned Oil Well. Their Goal: Shut It Down. Students, nonprofit groups and others are fund-raising to cap highly polluting oil and gas wells abandoned by industry. ( www.nytimes.com )

It's a serious policy failure that this is happening; the people paying to cap wells should be the ones who became wealthy by extracting the oil, not a bunch of random teenagers.

And...

"We're the cleanup crew for a party we were too young to attend." - Kevin Gilbert, from a song on the album Thud

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled ( lemmy.world )

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn't rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

lettruthout ,

It's called an "H-type" head. I found some tools for that on eBay but was reluctant to spend any money on something I'd probably never need again, ever. But this video shows a hack using scissors.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA6_S9YkZEc

I didn't have a pair laying around that worked but the video inspired me to MacGyver my way to remove that aberration against all that's good in humanity.

lettruthout ,

Wow, doing a MacGuyver with corporate assistance. I like it!

lettruthout ,

He succeeded for the rich and failed for the rest of us - and future generations (increased debt, doubting climate change, etc).

lettruthout ,

...because the threat of a death penalty worked so well to eliminate the occurrence of other crimes.

lettruthout OP ,

Wow, that seems like a very useful approach. Yeah it's a bit manipulative, but in a kind way. Thanks for sharing this, and the back story!

lettruthout OP ,

Same here come to think about it. That's weird too.

lettruthout ,

Well apparently a lot of people didn't come to hear what he said, they left during the speech...

I've only been to one that was big. It seemed like most people were still in the venue at the end, and it was slow going on way getting out.

lettruthout ,

Vermont and New Hampshire have exchanged places! Who knew?

lettruthout ,

Yes, a much improved alignment!

lettruthout ,

What's probably going to happen if that's fired?

Regulators approve sweeping change to the way most Californians are billed for electricity ( www.latimes.com )

“This will punish people who use less energy,” said Jenn Engstrom, the state director at consumer advocacy group CALPIRG. “This will encourage high consumption and it will increase bills for millions of Californians.”...

lettruthout ,

I am once again wishing Bernie was President.

lettruthout ,

Thanks for referencing and linking the Social Cost of Carbon info. That's a good way to look at this issue.

lettruthout ,

So... SCOTUS decides in Trump's favor, Biden has him assassinated, Biden wins election.

Trump is arguing that this will be OK, right? Right?

lettruthout ,

Then there's the military's 'knife bomb'...

"While other versions of the Hellfire take out targets in the expected ways — through explosive force or with shrapnel — the R9X crushes or slices a target to death. It is essentially a flying bundle of swords that can kill the occupant of a car without harming people around the vehicle."

How SOCOM's secret 'knife bomb' became the prime weapon for killing hard-to-reach terrorists

lettruthout ,

Just guessing: maybe for driving on railroad tracks.

lettruthout ,

Maybe we shouldn't fight it any more. Maybe we should just keep upping the price so much that it would no longer be economically viable for bribe lobby our politicians. Would they keep up their polluting ways if the price was $72M? How about $720M?

lettruthout ,

How about inviting some survivors from the Holocaust that Israel is currently carrying out?

lettruthout ,

'Gotta act fast if we want to continue supporting genocide.

lettruthout ,

Yes, and I think that's why we're seeing such quick and drastic measures being taken against student protesters - too many powerful people know that these protests will be effective if allowed to continue.

lettruthout ,

I wonder if they used a tractor to pull that trailer.

lettruthout ,

It’s a toss up: either chalkboards or dry erase boards. Both are remarkable.

lettruthout ,

“Suffer!!”

  • plague bug from Rapture-Polooza movie
lettruthout OP ,

Yikes! Thanks for that lead. A search on that confirms what I‘m seeing, and explains why my Amaranth has been stunted. This is going to be a challenge to control.
