They yell at us: "Stop being a doomer! You have to give people hope!"

To which I respond with what Greta Thunberg says: "I don't want your hope. I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act!"

Along those lines, I strongly recommend this superb new essay from author and climate campaigner Jonathon Porritt, in which he explains that mainstream climate scientists, by insisting we should always be positive and hopeful, run the risk of becoming the new climate deniers.

Here is a brief summary...

  1. The speed with which the climate is now changing is faster than (almost) all scientists thought possible.

  2. There is now zero prospect of holding the average temperature increase this century to below 1.5°C; even 2°C is beginning to slip out of reach. The vast majority of climate scientists know this, but rarely if ever give voice to this critically important reality.

  3. At the same time, the vast majority of people still haven’t a clue about what’s going on – and what this means for them and everything they hold dear.

  4. The current backlash against existing (already wholly inadequate) climate measures is also accelerating – and will cause considerable political damage in 2024. Those driving this backlash represent the same old climate denial that has been so damaging over so many years.

  5. The science-based institutions on which we depend to address this crisis have comprehensively failed us. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is incapable of telling the whole truth about accelerating climate change; the Conference of the Parties (under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) has been co-opted by the fossil fuel lobby to the point of total corruption.

  6. By not calling out these incontrovertible realities, mainstream scientists are at risk of becoming the new climate deniers.

@wdlindsy Please call them out for who they are, W.A.S.P.s.. No one was opposed to using this term during the 50s, 60s, & 70s until Ray Gun got in office. Not only does it speak to their evangelical hypocrisy but also their racist white nationalism, and their greediest capitalism ideologies. Pull back that white sheet & expose them for all to see. @wdlindsy Would someone please explain to me the concept, image, and actions of the Anti-Christ. How and when would we know him if we should see him? Would he have a silver tongue spewing lies? Would he be falsely vain? Would he demand all adore him and rain down retribution on those that don't? If only there were some book, like a manual or something to guide us. Maybe Mike Pence knows. (Note: I'm an atheist since childhood yet I can see the light.)

@wdlindsy You remember acting Dep AG Sally Yates in 2016 wrote the memo the DOJ would phase out Private Prisons. One of his first acts as AG Jeff Sessions rescinded that order. The Mercer's held a lot of stocks in the two largest private prison companies, GEO & CCA. Yates cost them lots of money. Old donny & Jeff made sure that got it back, & then some.

@GottaLaff @5klp471 I find it irksome when people say "too" as in "There have been too many school shooting" "too many trans people killed" "This has been going on for too long". Sounds like "some" is ok but now it's "too" much. Better to "so" as in "so many school shootings" "so many trans folks killed", etc.. What ya think?

I'm a retired academic (Ph.D. in theology) with a husband who is also a retired Ph.D. in theology. As a gay couple now in our 51st year together, we found ourselves very much unwelcome and unwanted in the Catholic institutions in which we taught.

@wdlindsy I'm surprised & saddened 4 U 2 read this, William. Almost everyone I've encountered here seems "nice". Maybe you saw I started a GoFundMe. Right after I joined here & a platform called Next Door. Some on ND are cold, to me, brutal even. All loving toward strays & wild beasts but me not so much. Of my 5 donations largest came from someone here ($500) I never met. You know ignorance = lack of knowledge in a given field. Lots a people are pretty ignorant. Don't shut down. UR posts R good.

@wdlindsy Come to think of it, couple got on me cause I was inaccurate regarding details of Communism, mutual aid, and stuff. When I asked as a community they provide me aid by donating 2 my GFM, what I got was crickets. Intellectualism and theory but no putting into practice. Oh well, we move on. Keep up the good work. Yes, things are gonna' get much worse. Some will never see their hand in front of their face.

@wdlindsy Yes, past friends & very generous donation from someone here & going deeper in debt w/cash advance on C Card I was able to reach my 1st goal. 2 more to go, Quarterly Maintenance & Real Estate Tax. Still need $4500+. Jerks are everywhere, SM, bars, PTA, grocery, Congress. All men are jerks but not always that kind of jerk. We just get bright ideas winding up to be jerk stuff, DOH! Usually good intentions, not the hurtful, spiteful kind. VULNERABLE NO MORE! UNITED WE STAND!
