"Donald Trump is in a stronger place with the GOP base than he was at this time during his initial rise to power. While he had serious challengers in 2016, he’s waltzing through the GOP primaries this year, largely due to strong support from white evangelical Protestants. ...

There are virtually no prominent voices today in the mainstream white evangelical world making a theological or moral case against supporting Trump."

@wdlindsy Would someone please explain to me the concept, image, and actions of the Anti-Christ. How and when would we know him if we should see him? Would he have a silver tongue spewing lies? Would he be falsely vain? Would he demand all adore him and rain down retribution on those that don't? If only there were some book, like a manual or something to guide us. Maybe Mike Pence knows. (Note: I'm an atheist since childhood yet I can see the light.)

@happycoyote12 I'm not by any means an expert in spotting the antichrist, but assume that he (he's normally spoken of by that pronoun) will be the antithesis of who Christ is in the gospels, while touting himself as the second coming of Christ. I tend to think there may be more than one antichrist over the course of history.

"Through it all — scandals, lewd behavior and crass language, a conviction for sexual assault, four indictments, you name it — Trump’s favorability rating has never dropped below 60% in PRRI polling among white evangelicals, with churchgoing evangelicals generally registering higher support. According to exit polls, their support for Trump went from 81% to 85% between 2016 and 2020. They are not holding their nose in order to vote for Trump. They are embracing him."

@solownh Help me understand, please. The biblical character Dathan?

@solownh@mstdn.party avatar

@wdlindsy

From the Old Testament he challenged Moses' authority and tried to make himself one of the Israelite leaders.

"God kept Dathan and Abiram alive so Moses had worthy antagonists while traveling through the desert. This way, the realms of good and evil could be balanced."

The false prophet prophesy is what is happening between Trump and Evangelicals from a biblical perspective

@solownh Thank you. That Dathan! I assumed that's who you meant, but had to search way back in my memory bank to childhood days to remember much of his story. A good comparison.

@wdlindsy Please call them out for who they are, W.A.S.P.s.. No one was opposed to using this term during the 50s, 60s, & 70s until Ray Gun got in office. Not only does it speak to their evangelical hypocrisy but also their racist white nationalism, and their greediest capitalism ideologies. Pull back that white sheet & expose them for all to see. Peace brother.

@happycoyote12 Yes, with many fellow travelers now who aren't really WASPs but have other ethnic heritages — I'm thinking especially of the very strong representation of white Christian nationalist views in much of the Midwest including North Dakota, where WASPs are few and far between.
