Lemmy is a failed Reddit alternative

I first joined Lemmy back during the big Reddit exodus of last year. I like many others wanted an alternative to Reddit, and I thought that this might've been the one. I made two accounts, one on lemmy.world and another on sh.itjust.works, in the June of last year that I used on and off for about 4 months....

die444die ,

Thankfully they’re super easy to spot and block.

Redoing the spark plug wires on my old truck and pulled off the valve covers and cleaned the rust off and painted them.

They’re looking real pretty now. Excited to get everything put all back together.

Samuel Alito’s Mysterious Absence From Supreme Court Raises Questions ( newrepublic.com )

Samuel Alito was again absent from the Supreme Court on Friday after skipping out on Thursday. No information has yet been provided by the court for Alito’s mysterious absence, which comes as the court is issuing decisions before the end of its term and leaves nothing but questions on his whereabouts....

die444die ,

Yes , I am. The US right is so batshit that I’ve never found one I could even consider voting for. And most democrats in the US are to the right of my beliefs.

But I am pretty cenrterist in my policy beliefs.

die444die ,

The person who filed this suit is the type of person that we should all agree is deserving of being bludgeoned to death and thrown in a dumpster.

I may be being too kind to him though.

People like this make me wish there actually was a Hell, because he’d most assuredly be there and tortured for eternity if there was.

Spectrum Call Center in Charlotte, NC Reportedly Provided Fried Chicken and Watermelon to Employees for Juneteenth ( thencbeat.com )

“We want to acknowledge some feedback received regarding our Juneteenth celebration,” Pezzuto said in his letter obtained by The North Carolina Beat. “Although our intent was to celebrate this nationally recognized day, some of you voiced your concerns regarding the associated food choices.”...

I'm not trying to be an asshole.

Maybe you'll believe from a sistah

This is manufactured outrage

Mhmm. Not trying to be an asshole indeed.

To the commenter below - No, you didn’t have to explain to this asshole anything. They know what they are doing and saying. Considering how easy it is to block people in lemmy, I’m taking advantage of that right now by blocking them.

die444die ,

I don’t know where you’re from, but in my neck of the woods mustard greens would beg to differ.

die444die ,

Was it even a battle flag? I thought the battle flag it was based on was square and the “modern” one was created after the confederacy?

die444die ,

They JUST told you, no one is advocating for surgeries in children. What they are advocating for is what has been done for ages - puberty blockers and therapy until they are of the age to make the decision for themselves.

You keep referring to “surgery” and now “chemical therapy” (I assume you mean hormones), but that’s not at all what is supposed to happen with children, it’s a straw man made up by by the right wing.

You say “it’s our job to give them time to grow into a decision or an identity before making a lasting choice” and that’s EXACTLY what's been happening and is still under assault by these anti-trans laws that keep getting passed in the confederate states.

They don’t want them to exist so they are trying to legislate them away.

die444die ,

And that’s a completely different issue that’s totally separate from the anti trans laws being pushed by the right wing today.

die444die ,

Blockers are still a change. Inhibiting your sexuality at that age drives a bigger rift between you and your peers. More so than feeling a bit different.

What’s your source for this?

Also, I’m not sure I would describe someone going through this process as “feeling a bit different”.

The great thing about blockers is that you can stop them if they aren’t right for you.

To your point about state laws against trans rights there is a LOT to unpack there but I was very clear about my stance of protect and support but do not intervene (in development.)

Am I reading this correct that you seem to think that your “don’t let anyone take puberty blockers” stance is somehow protecting and supporting? And preventing others that from being able to do so is “not intervening”?

die444die , (edited )

What makes you think people are “forcing” them to do this?

You’ve now made it absolutely clear that you are just yet another anti-trans bigot who is pretending to want a conversation, but instead is just trying to weasel your abhorrent views into the public discourse.

You have failed, and everyone here sees through your bullshit.

You are what is wrong with discourse, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Side note to anyone else reading this: it’s SUPER easy to block people like this on lemmy and there really aren’t as many of these chodes as you’d think - I generally only have to block one or so a month and it makes things a whole lot less contentious once you realize you can just block people who are arguing that their hatred is somehow acceptable.

die444die ,

I agree with what you are saying here, I’m just not sure that was the previous posters point.

It may have been, but it reads to me like they are just saying “nuh uh” to the person above them.

die444die ,

I do this too. It was surprising to me that I started recognizing them so quickly.

They all get names now. This year I have a whole family of finches that I call the Murphy’s but tbh they act more like BeBe’s kids, just show up throwing seed everywhere and acting like they ain’t got no sense.

die444die ,

It’s classic attention seeking behavior. Just block them and move on.

die444die ,

100 percent agree. It’s just an attention seeker trying to rile people up. Much better to just block them.

die444die ,

Yeah it’s really tough seeing so much support for hatred. I grew up in south MS but moved to LA a long time ago because it seemed a little more open minded. I can’t say it’s worse than MS, but it sure seems to have regressed a lot. If I could afford to move somewhere better I would, but since I can’t I just gotta keep fighting for good I suppose.

die444die ,

The infrastructure is much better in the US than you’re suggesting. I’ve taken numerous long road trips in my EV (and it’s not a Tesla, so not using the supercharger network) and I’ve never once been stranded or even had to wait longer than a 10-15 minutes before I’m able to plug in and charge on the rare time the chargers are busy, and I’m talking 2000+ mile trips. Could it be better? Absolutely. But it’s nowhere near as bad as you are trying to make it.

die444die ,

Well considering you were responding to someone who was specifically speaking about the US and you didn’t specify that, yeah I think that is a reasonable assumption.

die444die ,

What’s it called when people do this?

Trying to shut down reasonable voices by attacking and then saying that type of comment is going to affect how they vote ?

This feels fake as hell and I see it constantly now.

Am I the only one who thinks statements like this are just attempts at keeping reasonable people from speaking up?

die444die ,

sadly, real Americans saw it enough that they began to think it was a common stance… so then Americans actually started adopting that stance.

I prefer to think people aren’t this dumb and it’s all still trolls. That’s my hope at least.

die444die ,

Which edgy internet atheist are you referring to? I’m not understanding how your comment relates to the person you replied to?

die444die ,

No one suggested any of the things you are ranting about though. That’s why I’m confused. Someone said that they don’t like talking about religion because it seems to them like lemmy users hate all religion. Someone else responded with a comment saying they believe it’s not all religions and it’s really specific things that most people seem to take issue with, and then you came in ranting about how they are the problem. Wtf?

I just don’t understand how you got that from their comment.

die444die ,

Yeah that’s not what I’m doing. You specifically are not making any logical sense, and instead of engaging in conversation, you’re attacking. I was just confused if you misread the comment above you or you replied to the wrong person. Take a look in the mirror at all the accusations you’re hurling.

die444die ,

Yeah I just block jerks like this guy. Makes lemmy a whole lot more pleasant.

die444die ,

There are not many people I’d applaud the death of, but these pieces of garbage are among them.

Just some of the worst humanity has to offer.

die444die ,

This isn’t just about withholding Medicaid. They are also banning healthcare in half of the states for transgender minors, at one of the most critical times in their lives, even though they know this has a high potential of leading to more suicides amongst trans youth. Yes. It’s genocide.

die444die ,

Yeah that guy is just dumb. I checked his post history and decided to just go ahead and block him.

die444die ,

Wait is this an AI hallucination or is there really a pop tart movie?

die444die ,

Oh god. I see. He is making a bold and idiotic statement to get people talking since he has a new movie coming out.

At least he’s not playing a talking pop tart which is what I envisioned.

Still, here we are, talking about him. Ugh.

die444die ,

Why tf are they referring to that hack karoline leavett as national press secretary?

die444die ,

23k is the max annual contribution. The money is taxed upon withdrawal. It’s not “hidden”.

die444die ,

I didn't read this.

Then why are you commenting on it?

die444die ,

This is incorrect. Bush banned new lines of fetal stem cells from being used. This was a step backwards for research.

Read more here:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2744932/

die444die ,

It was a compromise that siad that some aborted corpses were okay.

They stopped any further lines from being created. What do you not understand about this? It was already ongoing research, and they put a stop to it for political purposes. Even if this calls it a “compromise” it meant that no further lines (no new fetal tissue) could be used.

Portraying GWB as someone who was fighting for stem cell research rather than against it is flat out false.

die444die ,

What they wanted was no cell research at all. But that wasn’t politically possible, and it wasn’t because other members of the GOP didn’t want it. So he “compromised” by saying they could still use the existing lines but no future lines could be created. You’re acting like the GOP was okay with this, they were not. This was a compromise because it’s was the best they could do at the time, and it still got some of the research banned.

Sure Nancy Reagan was outspoken about it but it was not the GOP.

die444die ,

Wonder why they never thought of that?! You must be a genius to have come up with such a novel idea as this!!

die444die ,

This is a terrible summary. It switches halfway through from talking about Biden to talking about trump without saying so.

die444die ,

What, pray tell, would you suggest that we vote for then?

die444die ,

“Just about every American has shocked themselves with it once”

Um, no.

die444die ,

Are you saying they shocked themselves plugging something in? Or putting something else into the outlet.

The plug itself is not really easy to shock yourself on, you’d have to intentionally try to do it by putting something behind it to bridge the pins, or have a broken plug or something, so that’s why I am saying this seems incorrect.

I definitely knew some dumbasses that would attempt to creat a power arc, but they were certainly not the majority.

die444die ,

Possible, sure. Easy? Not really.

die444die ,

You are the internet rando here questioning the doctors remedy. Thankfully no one seems to be taking you seriously.
