Seawater intrusion below glaciers may be reaching a tipping point (or have even passed it) suggesting we could be about to see a significant sea level rise.

Aha, say the sceptics, this is 'may' and 'could'... we want the facts.

The problem is that approach to the climate is what has got us where we are... climate scientists have been warning us for years, and their estimates/fears have been largely borne out, the sceptics claims, not so much!

I’ve been thinking back to the days when, as a consultant or as an activist, I was privy to things before they were announced. It never occurred to me to run off down the bookies or do whatever else might have enriched me with insider knowledge. And, for the people calling such a thing “a flutter”, it’s not a flutter. It’s cheating and planning to defraud the bookies. It’s grubby and even if you didn’t know it was illegal you’d know instinctively it was immoral.

The gender criticals kidded themselves they were on the right side of history and shutting down a conspiracy in trans care. As anyone could have predicted, their ideology, snatching the prospect of timely care from young trans people, appears to have produced an actual tragedy.

This is incredibly sad. Yesterday it was announced that my friend for 25 years, Professor Lynn Conway, passed away at the weekend. Love and condolences to her husband Charlie.

The last we spoke was last year by FaceTime from her home in Michigan. A big part was about how she, a trans woman, would escape to Canada if it all went utterly tits up in the US with a Trump return. All I can say is that Lynn has now beaten the bastards and is safely beyond their reach after a long life lived well.

The hotel I’m staying in has three full floors and a partial fourth on the roof with (allegedly) better views. There are two lifts from the lobby. One goes only as far as the third floor, the other has a ‘4’ button. But if you summon a lift from the lobby and the ‘three floors’ lift arrives there is then no way to summon the other one. I asked the reception staff about this, thinking I’d maybe missed something, but it is what it is. They think it’s barmy too. 😂

Notice you don’t see Kemi Badenoch campaigning on Britain’s trade — her principal ministerial bailiwick. It’s understandable. As Business and Trade Secretary she and her predecessors since Brexit have failed to deliver the trade deals we were promised. Exporting is now harder than ever and small businesses have given up trying. So she’s made up a problem that doesn’t exist and, whilst she thinks she’s found a form of words to pretend she’s not painting trans folk as predators, that’s the effect.

I can’t help feeling that it would be incredibly ironic if Victoria Atkins’ outrageous step of outlawing the prescription and possession of a narrow range of GnRH agonists (so-called ‘puberty blockers’) led to desperate families either obtaining old-style anti-androgens with actual documented risks or — shock — going straight to the cross-sex hormones which blockers were supposed to buy time from. Literally ‘unintended consequences on steroids’. Welcome to prohibition.

@kenshirriff I learned this week from Scott Manley that these packages are not ICs in the sense we know (though 7400 series TTL was around from the early 70s). These are packages of a small number of discrete transistors wired up inside. I.e. All the components weren’t fabricated together on a single silicon substrate. These type are attributed to IBM I think he said. It’s very much a product of the space programme.

A climate denial rant is that the deaths from extreme weather do not (yet) show up in a graph of global deaths!

Science is trying to prevent extreme weather deaths from showing up in such graphs. Why don't they get that?

@ChrisMayLA6 I can’t help feeling people would have a more balanced view of what a smart phone can be were it not for social media which (contrary to impressions given) is not the only use case. The device isn’t the evil, it’s what foolish easily obsessed people do with it.

    christineburns ,

@ChrisMayLA6 If the smart phone had never been built then people would ascribe all the bad stuff stemming from internet access to the evil laptop or desktop. And before the public had access to the internet it was common to blame television or pop music. When I was a teenager discotheques and mopeds got the blame. Go back further and the root of social evil was the distribution of pamphlets. I blame coming down from the trees.

Today is St George’s Day. Don’t be fooled by the very British name though. If Gammons met St George today they’d immediately say he was a forriner. That story about slaying a dragon is well-suspect. Dragons don’t exist. The rest of his backstory is confused and he’s either a Greek or an Italian depending on your point of view.
