If you see a new youTube channel with a plain sounding name like "NatureView" or "BrightScience" etc. and there is what looks like a tempting video on a specific education topic "Most Active Volcanoes" or "Incredible Carnivorous Plants"

There is a 50/50 chance it will be a generated voice with stock footage and a script written by GPT.

I am now avoiding videos if I don't recognize the creator, or don't see signs it was made by a person.

So much spam!

@KathyLK @mondoweiss @palestine @israel Palestinians' lands should not have been stolen to create the Jewish state. The mere existence of Israel in the place it is today depends on ignoring the Palestinians whose land was stolen by a colonial power to give to European and American Jews fleeing antisemitism at home. Whether or not you agree that there should be a Jewish ethnostate, Israel was built on theft and murder.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @KathyLK @mondoweiss @palestine @israel So are you disputing that Palestinians were living on what is now considered Israel?

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @KathyLK @mondoweiss @palestine @israel You're evading the question. Palestinians were living in the area now called Israel before Israel was created. They were subsequently kicked out to enable European and American Jews (who were and are just as American or European as anyone else) to move in. We can talk about how we should address this fact, but trying to deny this fact is denying history.

And I never beat my wife, so the question is meaningless.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@KathyLK @nicholas_saunders @mondoweiss @palestine @israel The only way this make sense is if you're implying that European Jews are more Jew than European (i.e. they aren't "true" Europeans). People have been scattered from whatever homelands for dozens of reasons over millenia - does that mean they can just go back and kick out whoever's living there now?

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@KathyLK @nicholas_saunders @mondoweiss @palestine @israel Put another way: Should indigenous Americans be able to kick all other people off their land in the US, Canada, Mexico, etc? What about Maori in New Zealand? How about indigenous Australians?

@Flowermob @nabz123 @ViXY_DBC @mondoweiss @palestine @israel It is simultaneously true that Biden is actively supporting a genocide in Gaza and that Trump would actively be worse - not only for Gaza, but for Americans as well. Both things can be true and people are allowed to be horrified about the fact that we are forced to choose between two genocidal maniacs. The fact that Biden has done some other good stuff does not erase this.

Hey Germany,

So to atone for a genocide you perpetrated 80 years ago (and not only against Jews, but against Romani, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, etc), you're going to vocally support another country committing genocide? I guess any future Palestinian state would be justified in committing a second Shoah then, given all the murder of Palestinians Israel has been committing.

Right?

Here is how I “watch YouTube” first I check that my ad blockers are on, and the extension that hides thumbnails, and the extension that gives videos more neutral titles. I look at my subscriptions and add videos to a playlist. I search for topics I’m currently concerned about. When I have about 90min of video. I shuffle the list and check the order. Then (and only then) do I get to kick back and “watch TV”

YouTube isn’t easy to use this way.
Anyone else do something similar?

Nearly all of the most recent famines have been due to war:

1998–2004: Second Congo War. 2.7 million people died, mostly from starvation and disease
2003–2005: Famine during the War in Darfur, Sudan (200,000 deaths)
2011–2012: Famine in Somalia due to drought (285,000 deaths)
2016–present: Famine in Yemen, arising from the Yemeni Civil War and the subsequent food blockade of Yemen by Saudi Arabia (85,000 children have died so far)
2020–present: Famine in the Tigray War, Ethiopia
2021–present: Madagascar famine due to drought
2023-present: Gaza, Palestine, due to war and food blockade

Current famine in Gaza came on more quickly than any other.

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf What are you even talking about? The reservations are the construct of the US, and we very much tried to extinguish indigenous cultures (look up residential schools, where we *literally had the US army kidnap indigenous children and force them into boarding schools whose whole point was destroying indigenous cultures and breaking cultural transmission of language and customs).

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf Any indigenous cultures that remain today are a testament to the sheer will and tenacity of indigenous folks to hold on to their cultures against all odds and even when the most powerful country in the world is kidnapping your children to "beat the Indian out of them", as the saying went. We owe indigenous folks and African Americans so, so much in reparations.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf We kidnapped Africans and brought them here where we forced them to work on land we stole from indigenous people. We then forced indigenous folks to move to land the US government explicitly deemed uninhabitable (no joke) and kidnapped their kids to try to destroy their cultures. How do you even begin to repair this level of harm and trauma?

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf But they didn't! They were literally kidnapped by the US military at gunpoint.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf No, I'm talking about indigenous children kidnapped by the US military. As for slavery, the sheer scope of chattel slavery (and the permanent nature of it, along with being decoupled from war) makes it very different.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf I honestly don't know what you're trying to defend at this point. It feels like you have (at best) a passing understanding of precolumbian (precolonial) US history and you also don't know much about how the US has interacted with indigenous folks since then. All I can say is that I hope at some point, you look closer into this history because you're mischaracterizing so much.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf Look, I only responded because you said "nobody can stop them from studying Navajo anyway" and that's clearly BS. The US has tried (for centuries!) to stamp out all indigenous people in this country. Then it seemed like you were saying that chattel slavery as practiced by the Europeans and the US wasn't unique because other people had slaves too, without regard to context.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf Now you're trying to change the subject to Russian serfdom, which is also bad, but...completely different?

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf Ah yes, because Christians are the only civilized ones.

GTFO. And maybe read some real history that isn't steeped in Christofascism.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf Just. Stop. Again, maybe actually read some real history books, for your own sake.

chiraag ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@Helgi @immibis @palestine @poligraf So you've decided that you alone have the 'right' view of history, ill-informed though it may be, and that all non-Christians are barbarians.

I'm done with this conversation. All I can say is that I hope you one day reconsider, because you're veering very close to white supremacy (if not already there). As someone who is not white and not Christian, I stand in solidarity with everyone demonized by white supremacists.

> Latomus' three books were subsequently published as one volume: in these it can be seen that the discussion on heresy revolves around the contents of three other books Tyndale had written on topics like justification by faith, free will, the denial of the soul, and so on. Latomus makes no mention of Bible translation; indeed, it seems that in prison, Tyndale was allowed to continue making translations from the Hebrew.

The frustration for many of us with Biden comes from a place of knowing that he could do something to alter Netenyahu's calculus. He could withhold military assistance until Netenyahu stops committing the genocide, or come out publicly against what he's doing. Instead, if reports are to be believed, Biden has stuck to privately criticizing Netenyahu, which isn't working. This is appeasement all over again, but because the victims are brown, everyone looks the other way.

chiraag OP ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

The whole point of spreading the GenocideJoe hashtag is to try to pressure Biden to actually act. We are not your enemies, liberals. We just want Biden to do better. Telling us to shut up about Biden's aiding of a genocide really makes y'all look like you agree with said genocide.

It is fair to say that things would be worse under Trump. Absolutely! But it's unreasonable to try to say Biden should be free from criticism. That's not how democracy works.

chiraag OP ,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

Denying that Biden is abetting a genocide is just as bad as Trumpers arguing that Trump should be free from consequences for Jan 6 and every atrocity he has wrought against the most marginalized people in this country. In both cases, your dear leader should be free from criticism because "it's an election year and the other guy is worse" or whatever. No! Criticizing Biden is fair game, along with contextualizing it within the other options.
