blackn1ght OP ,

Yeah we're thinking of heading to Cornwall, we've always gone to a decent caravan park at the start of September before my son began school, but now we're having to look in the summer holidays and the prices are crazy!

The holiday with friends sounds fun, enjoy!

blackn1ght ,

Can you visualise the correct number of fingers on hands? I fear you might be an AI.

blackn1ght ,

I also wonder what happens as new generations start to become prominent, they might not have the same ideals as their parents and either move away or change the dynamics of the group.

I think your experience is probably similar to a lot of people's that join Lemmy. There's certainly a lot of people on this platform with quite extreme views. Many instances got sick of them and blocked them, and in turn they think we're liberal fascists.

I think most people by now have received bans from the world news community on lemmy.ml, including myself. I wouldn't worry about it!

    blackn1ght ,

I'll never understand how the tankies can claim it never happened when there's so many pictures like this available.

    blackn1ght ,

Yes. They try and minimize it as much as they possibly can. I've seem them claim on here that nobody was killed and that nothing happened at Tiananmen square.

    blackn1ght ,

So because you haven't personally seen it yourself it didn't happen? Ok.

    blackn1ght ,

Who should they vote for then that realistically keeps trump out of office?

    blackn1ght ,

Well according to them they didn't vote for biden, so who's the realistic non trump alternative?

    blackn1ght ,

You can put /modlog after the instance URL, e.g. https://lemmy.world/modlog

    blackn1ght ,

Guess that was probably on an lemmy.ml community?

My only complaint with the modlog is that it doesn't say which moderator performed the action. It just says "mod", so there's no way for a community to make sure particular mods aren't just going rogue.

What's the most interesting traditional or formal politeness behaviour or table manners in your culture? Or for any service personnel, in your restaurant? ( kbin.social )

I love all the ritualized behaviour, secret meanings and unexpected taboos - standing up when someone of higher status stands, elaborate rules for serving and eating, tapping the table to thank the server, never refuse a toast from a superior, stuff like that....

    blackn1ght ,

We don't do that here (UK), there's no order in which people are served their food. It doesn't really matter, as it's "polite" here to only start once everyone has got their food.

    blackn1ght ,

TIL the line to Ponty has been electrified.

This comment thread is making me feel old!

‘If you don’t have money to go to Europe by boat, you try to get there by starting a relationship with a tourist’: Sex tourism plagues Gambia ( english.elpais.com )

Economic inequality is driving European tourists to the African country who come seeking sun, but also sex. Its government’s plans to attract ‘quality tourism’ have failed to take off...

What's Cuba like? How are things domestically there?

    blackn1ght ,

It's never occurred to me it could be pronounced "gen zee".

    blackn1ght ,

I never bother clicking the piped bot links, and I'm not a fan of the tldr bot either as I think there's activity on a post but it turns out it's just the bot.

    blackn1ght ,

Agreed. There's communities where these comments are fine but the science community should be pretty strict about what type of comments are allowed. Every comment section in any community just ends with the same comments.

    blackn1ght OP ,

It was North Korea, but yeah it does sound familiar! I wonder if it could be used to insta cook a pot noodle...

Cornwall, especially the south coast, and the Lake District.

I'd like to see a lot more of Scotland too, I've only ever been to Edinburgh.

West Wales is lovely, around Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.

    blackn1ght ,

Does the lack of a shadow not make it obvious that these are decoys anyway?

    blackn1ght ,

I think it's more to deceive intelligence operators going over satellite images; I don't think Ukraine are flying manned sorties with jets over Russian airspace.

    blackn1ght ,

UAV means Unmanned Aerial Vehicle so it makes sense really.

Protected species takes up residence on busy Preston road ( www.blogpreston.co.uk )

Preston’s crumbling roads have long been a source of frustration, with the large potholes on South Meadow Lane in Broadgate causing particular problems for residents and visitors to The Continental and Avenham and Miller Park. Now, hopes of a bump-free road have been scuppered by the unexpected presence of a protected species....

    blackn1ght ,

I'd find it funny but the fact that the feet are on the clutch and brake peddles ruins it for me!

I have a Matrix client installed for some communication with some users from my instance but I don't really use it. I don't use discord either.

Pretty much just WhatsApp and Telegram, and Slack for work.

    blackn1ght ,

    Yeah it's owned by meta.

Revealed: a California city is training AI to spot homeless encampments ( www.theguardian.com )

Last July, San Jose issued an open invitation to technology companies to mount cameras on a municipal vehicle that began periodically driving through the city’s district 10 in December, collecting footage of the streets and public spaces. The images are fed into computer vision software and used to train the companies’...

This comment is so ridiculous it has to be some sort of bait.

    blackn1ght ,

I still use Reddit, maybe more in recent times actually. I don't like the platform and the app is a massive pile of wank, but there's more "normal" people there who don't spend every waking moment hating America or going on about Linux. I still use Lemmy nearly every day but it's more morbid curiosity now.

    blackn1ght ,

Didn't expect that. Hopefully she'll beat it! Can't imagine trying to reconcile that you've got cancer and then the public are making up conspiracy theories about you and your husband.

William has basically just found out his dad and wife both have cancer, that's got to be tough.

    blackn1ght ,

I think the latest models also have the gear selector (or whatever they're called for automatics / EVs) on the touch screen, so you need to swipe up to put it into drive.

    blackn1ght ,

Or left hand for right-hand drive cars, but yes.

I watch the CarWow channel on YouTube and they review a lot of EV's, and the host struggled with it - it would take him several attempts to get it into drive as he'd swipe up but not all the way so it would never actually engage. I guess in that case a software fix could be applied to make the control more sensitive but it's still fucking stupid to have it there in the first place.

Also for more WTFs, on that same channel, they do these challenges where they drive a bunch of EVs on a route and see which one goes the furthest, which has the closest range to what the manufacture claims it'll do and what happens to the vehicle when it runs out of battery. There was an instance where the Tesla ran out of charge, but they couldn't open the recharging port because the little door is electronic.

    blackn1ght , (edited )

Nope. I don't think we should be giving the state the power to execute people. Plus obviously there's always the chance that they're innocent.

I always find it kind of strange where in the US there's a big anti-government mentality but they're happy for the government to execute people.

    blackn1ght ,

True love when they're both on their phones on social media.

    blackn1ght ,

    What's vehicle registration?

    blackn1ght ,

I think every country in the UK requires vehicle tax information to be resubmitted every year unless Northern Ireland is different? I've not heard someone refer to it to vehicle registration before though, only car tax.

    blackn1ght ,

His constituency as an MP and the Tory party membership elected him leader.

    blackn1ght ,

The country is more than what's happened in the last 12 years or so. There's our way of life, our culture and identity that would all be under threat.

But if you've family and friends who are being bombed or having to live under an oppressive occupier who's turned everyone's lives upside down then I can see why people would be motivated to fight.

I'm hoping this guy is trying to light a fire under the governments arse to improve the recruitment process and also make a u-turn on the reduction of numbers they've been facing.

    blackn1ght ,

Well they were basically only ever really concerned about two things (immigration and muh sovereignty), they didn't give a shit about anything else, they'd even say it would be worth the UK going backwards for decades to get out of the EU.
