Serious question: What's the leftists position on police in the ideal but realistic socialist world? What would make ACAB irrelevant?

blackn1ght ,

Police serve the wealthy, rather than the people

Are there common every day examples where this happens? I'll be honest my exposure to the police is extremely limited and from a UK perspective. Do you mean like the police will prioritise responding faster to wealthy people and are more likely to put resources in solving crimes against them than your average person?

blackn1ght ,

No, I mean by upholding Private Property Rights

What does this mean though? Like if someone breaks into my house then they shouldn't be coming over to investigate?

enforcing racist and anti-poor laws they uphold the brutal status quo

Is this not an issue with the laws of the country rather than the police? I feel like it would be an even bigger issue if the police just became a law unto themselves and decided on their own what they should laws they should or shouldn't enforce.

What's the underlying problem that's causing water companies to go down this route? Has there been a chronic lack of investment over the years and now they aren't keeping up with demand and having to dump it instead of process it?

blackn1ght OP ,

I have to add some jam when I have peanut butter on toast, for some reason I find it really dry.

blackn1ght OP ,

Is it better than pussy?

blackn1ght ,

That's a weird way of spelling "being thrown into a pit of sewage"

blackn1ght ,

I'm literally in this picture and I don't like it :D

Jokes aside, the extreme politics that stem from some instances will only hurt the the growth of the fediverse.

I don't think we should defederate from lemmy.ml but I'd certainly recommend users adding it to their list of blocked instances. Hopefully less people end up using the communities on the instance and its significance in the overall fediverse dwindles.

blackn1ght ,

There's a lot of [Citation needed] tags on a lot of those claims. I'm not denying they exist but it's also a bit of a flimsy source.

blackn1ght ,

If you're new to Lemmy then it won't be common knowledge at all.

blackn1ght ,

I don't know why the lemmy.ml admins don't just defederate from everyone but lemmygrad and hexbear. It's clear that only their extreme views are allowed and they must spend a lot of time banning "libs".

It would do everyone a favour really. We'd have less instance politics and hopefully more content, and make it the fediverse more attractive to the average person.

blackn1ght ,

But they may not know the history of it or why it was made before joining. I certainly didn't, it was more about a decentralised alternative to Reddit, I just joined and explored.

blackn1ght ,

The way comments and users are purged from ml would make Stalin proud!

blackn1ght ,

Maybe politics was the wrong word, what I mean is drama.

blackn1ght ,

I've added it to my blocked instances and I'd recommend others who have an issue with the way the communities on that instance are moderated and the way it's managed to do the same.

Fortunately there are alternative instances and communities that are less authoritarian with their moderation.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

blackn1ght ,

"Be nice and civil" - which is a fair enough rule, but it's always used as a blanket ban. Most of the removed comments weren't hostile or uncivil

The thread was posted into the memes community too so there's always going to be a bit of banter, but most comments that weren't in support of China were removed.

blackn1ght ,

I wonder if they're able to see this?

Warning: NSFL

blackn1ght ,

This thread makes me laugh.

They're getting their knickers in a twist thinking that Biden is escalating and would be the cause for a nuclear war, conveniently forgetting that:

  • Russia invaded Ukraine
  • Russia has been constantly making threats to use nuclear weapons against western nations since the invasion started
  • Russia attacks Ukraine from within their own borders
blackn1ght ,

And the other 10%?

blackn1ght ,

What country are you from? I don't see any fascist comments in your profile, but you do seem extremely pissed off that Ukraine is defending itself from Russia.

blackn1ght ,

They do though? They provide a place to live that you can move into way faster than you can if you were buying it. They cover the maintenance costs, and some even provide properties that are fully furnished.

I agree that they hoard properties for financial gain but they do provide something.

blackn1ght ,

Can't they sell the surplus to neighbouring countries?

blackn1ght ,

This sounds like a weird deal. I feel like they should be paying Germany, not the other way round!

blackn1ght ,

Thank fucking Christ. That's sooner than I expected too!

blackn1ght ,

If you're a landlord then surely you have the power not to do this with your property or properties?

blackn1ght ,

This must have flown right by me, but what was Reddit's attitude?

blackn1ght ,

I was thinking the same thing. I'm pretty sure you need to sign the documentation after double checking what the registrar has put down. We have up to 6 weeks too to register the birth if you haven't had chance to decide on a name yet.

blackn1ght ,

What are the chances that this goes nowhere.

blackn1ght ,

I think you've got some Russian propaganda dribbling off your chin.

blackn1ght ,

I don't think they are, they're more akin to forums.

In my mind, social media is where you follow people and people broadcast their lives. That's the social aspect of it.

With Reddit and Lemmy we follow communities on topics we're interested in.

I do get the arguments for it to be social media but that just makes the category way too broad, as you could argue any site with a comment section is social media.

blackn1ght , (edited )

How is this a controversial take? If you need a wall to keep people in or attempting to emigrate makes you a "defector", or you've built up a huge surveillance network where your neighbours or even partners can report you for bullshit "crimes" , you're an authoritarian state.

blackn1ght ,

How many dicks per hour does OPs mum take?

blackn1ght ,

The US is sliding towards fascism

Who are you voting for then that will help keep Trump out of office?

blackn1ght ,

I couldn't imagine losing any of my kids, absolutely devastating.

But something I'd never do is put my kids in such danger, he had the choice not to put his family on a raft to cross the channel.

blackn1ght ,

The UK currently spends 2.32% of GDP on defence.

Had to scroll quite far down the article to find out what the current % is.

blackn1ght OP ,

....no shit. The moment I heard of this concept years ago it sounded like a terrible idea.

blackn1ght ,

We used to use re-usable cloth wipes for a while with our first. They were OK but honestly wet wipes were so much more convenient, in that they seemed to do a better job of cleaning and also you don't have to faff about storing them and washing them etc.

blackn1ght OP ,

Yeah we're thinking of heading to Cornwall, we've always gone to a decent caravan park at the start of September before my son began school, but now we're having to look in the summer holidays and the prices are crazy!

The holiday with friends sounds fun, enjoy!

blackn1ght OP ,

My only experience of Africa has been Tunisia which I really enjoyed. There's so much of the world I'd love to explore but, time, money, children!

blackn1ght OP ,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend and auntie.

I've heard a lot of people say they enjoyed Istanbul, what did you enjoy about it?

We hired a big house in Wales for our wedding, it was lovely! We stayed in Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, overlooking the valley, it was gorgeous. Huge house, hot tub, decent garden, it was perfect. If I had a group of friends then I'd definitely head back.
