So, my spouse sent me a lengthy article about detransitioning earlier today, and it:

  1. Irritated me.
  2. Made me want to get some stats of my own.

So, the question is: "As a trans person, what are your opinions about detransitioning (DT)?"

Please select any and all options that apply.

Please only answer if consider yourself to be trans, nonbinary, or formerly trans or nonbinary.

Please boost for reach. I want like every trans person on Mastodon in this poll.

Thank you! 🩵 :heart_trans: 🩷

Here's the article in question: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-transyouth-outcomes/

Tattie ,
@Tattie@eldritch.cafe avatar

@alice ok but why the hell is your spouse sending you articles about detransition?

You can tell them this: the most common reason people detransition is lack of acceptance from the people around them. Look them in the eye as you tell them this.

I think both trans people and transphobes have the tendency to monster detransitioners, which is horrible. All they are are people who tried a thing but it didn't work out for whatever reason. Very few actually regret trying!

Every trans or questioning person should be supported, gently encouraged to explore options that they feel might make them happy, and allowed to stop if they don't feel that it's helping. It doesn't matter where you eventually end up, or how many false starts there are along the way.

Your spouse's role is to provide that support. And they are failing. Badly.

"Hey, totally unrelated, and if this is too personal then please just ignore me, lol. What exactly was your experience like, figuring out that you're nonbinary, and roughly when did that happen?
" —Someone I know on Matrix

I responded in chat, but figured my answers might be of broader interest to people who are enby(or Alice)-curious 😋 So here it goes...

⚠️ CW for some slurs and gender stereotyping ⚠️

The short of it is that a couple years ago my kid expressed to me that they weren't sure if they were their assigned gender. To be supportive, I started learning everything I could about being trans. Eventually, they decided that they were okay with their birth gender (at least for now, and maybe forever), but I realized I wasn't okay with mine.

I've always been :_gaysparkle: queer™ :_gaysparkle:, and I've always sort of skirted gender norms (leaning more heavily one way or another as I grew up), but I was raised in a time (the 80s/90s) and environment (latchkey kid with no [living] LGBT+ family members) where transgender people weren't really "a thing". There were "cross-dressers", and "trannies", and several other slurs, but it all got reduced to a "fetish" or "sickness" at the end.

I didn't feel like I had any sort of (relevant) fetish, and I didn't think I was sick, so it must be "something else".

Basically, I didn't have the vocabulary to express that I was nonbinary, or to know it was even an option not to be my assigned gender.

But don't get me wrong, I've never identified particularly strongly with either extreme of traditional gender presentation. Looking back through the lens of what I know now, there were a lot of things I was dysphoric about (and several that still get to me), but at the time I just thought I was weird or that everyone else felt the same and no one mentioned it.

So I didn't mention it either.

Now that I'm older, better informed, and give even fewer fucks what other people think about how I express myself, it's surprising to me that it took so long to figure things out.

So unlike some trans people who strongly associated with their non-assigned gender from an early age, and some nonbinary folk who collect genders like Pokémon, I'm the kind of enby who just gives a lot less importance to which gender I take my influences from—as long as I like the aesthetic or it makes me feel more "me", then we're all good.

So I think I'm probably somewhere around a...um, Alice(?) when it comes to my gender expression 🙃

It's still a work in progress, but as it stands now:

    • I hardly wear makeup 💄 (except nail polish 💅🏻)
    • Most of my clothes are marketed as being for women, but are pretty unisex —save for my cute socks and underwear 🧦👙
    • I like pinks and purples...a lot 💜
    • I like having muscle definition 💪🏻
    • I can't stand body hair 🪒
    • I like my tits, but I'm glad they're small 🧁🧁
    • I've had short hair for most of my adult life, but I'm having fun growing it out again like when I was a kid 👩🏻‍🦲👩🏻‍🦰
    • I dislike most sports, except of course for locksport 🔓 and Bloodsport (1998) 🩸

It feels super-awkward listing off all the stereotypically gendered things about me that I can think of. The idea of a color or a haircut being "for boys" or "for girls" just seems weirdly restrictive and arbitrary.

@alice very important question: what flavour are the cookies? 🙂

I absolutely love the "parent reads up on gender topics for their child's sake" ➡️ "parent realises they're not their AGAB" pipeline; not the first time I've heard of it! 😊 Apparently when I came out it prompted some gender questioning from two of my family members, tho they both decided in the end they were fine identifying as their AGAB.

#trans people: what you want out of #transition is your business and nobody else's.

There is no moral component to what you desire. Do you want to look basically like a cis person of your favoured gender? Or visibly trans? Both are valid choices. Muscular, slim, or chunky? Elegant, tacky, or slobbish? Femme, masc, or aggressively non-binary? Big-titted? Small-titted? Flat as a board? Made up or natural? Alternative or normie?

Basically if it is achievable and safe, go for it. And if your vision evolves over time, that's great too!

The most powerful thing you can be is unapologetically yourself. Let nobody, cis or trans, shame you for your own choice of presentation. You never asked to be at the forefront of some culture war. Your chosen look isn't a comment on feminism or queer rights or race or privilege or anything else.

    You're just you. Be you.

I was talking to my husband today about antkeeping and in the course of explaining a complex colony rehoming (see the "innocent" twins I posted that colony is nearly 2k strong and CRAZY) I happened to say "anytime you open a port to a space that contains ants, ants come out of it."

He found this VERY funny for some reason and is now calling it "The Ironclad Law of Antkeeping: anytime you open something full of ants, ants come out."

I mean... he has a point. I guess.

Which country are you from, and which segment of the population would you say prefers Mastodon in your country?

For instance, in Denmark I would say the Danish right-wingers are very much organised on X, while the apolitical are often Instagram users.

But who is on Mastodon in your country and why?

Here is an old video of my suspected thelytokously parthenogenic colony.

There were fewer than ten of them when I started raising them and I've never seen a male. Their queen died on Feb. 13 2024 ... over fifty days ago. They raised some of the eggs laid by the dead queen into new queens, and now they are laying new egg and raising them to be female workers. I'm astounded and honored to witness the resilience of these little ants!

    • Brush your teeth twice a day. Not once. TWICE.
    • The few things about your appearance you have (some) control over are not very important in romance.
