The ocean is a very large object— but proportionately speaking it’s not very thick — a skin of water yet still deeper than I dare to imagine.

@futurebird I always wonder what ocean weather was like in the era of Panthalassa. Larger ocean, and during much of that time, also a warmer climate. Sometimes much warmer.

@futurebird
Yes and I still find it hard to visualise, even though I know that if you scaled the Atlantic down to the size of a dinner table, its thickness would be comparable to the table cloth, not more.

Same is true for geological rock layers. When I was a student, we once had to draw rock layers of the local mountains with the same vertical and horizontal scale, not (as usual) using a much larger vertical scale. Everything just looked flat!

@Heliograph @futurebird The truly mind-blowing part is how many moons in our solar system have more water than earth. Never ceases to amaze me.

I read this as 'surface tension spider' and it still made sense.

@Hedgewizard @Tattie @Heliograph @futurebird thank you surface tension spider, for keeping the water where it belongs and not in a big orb over North America 🙏

Tired: The earth rests on a stack of infinite turtles
Wired: A giant surface tension spider keeps the ocean from beading up into one huge ball of water.
