You got voted down, but this is absolutely real. I speak multiple languages, but none with the nuance and clarity of context as I do English. I communicate with folks all across the world that are all English speakers, however, the variance in comprehension is so drastic that at times we're really not using the same language, even if we're using some of the same words.

If you emigrate to a country, it's a reasonable expectation that you'll learn the language. The United States doesn't technically have an official language, English is just de facto, but from a practical standpoint it's absolutely occupying that role, and will in perpetuity.

I can absolutely agree with the premise that being frustrated with language barriers isn't racism, it's an actual real and realized impediment to understanding.

Now the big controversy is trans people, but if it wasn't, it would be anti gay sentiment. Gay is seen as comparatively normal even by Republicans because of a few complex reasons, but can be reductively simplified as changes to the Overton Window and what could be described as 'changing goal posts'

SlothMama ,

Lots of places have this, I wouldn't be able to be a Canadian citizen because of it.

SlothMama ,

For some perspective, CD trays, like the PS2 and Xbox had, that retracted mechanically were viewed as sleek and futuristic, and that's why slot loaders like the Wii and PS3 gained traction too.

It was an aesthetic choice, like the move from green LEDs to blue, though that has historic significant as blue LEDs are a relatively recent invention as the were incredibly difficult to figure out, so blue LEDs were seen as futuristic and opulent and used in everything consumer electronics for a while.

SlothMama ,

Literally untrue I promise, even worse, you're extra wrong because the PSX is actually the name of a Japanese specific set top entertainment box that also played PS2 games and was the introduction of the XMB ( Cross Media Bar ) interface that the PSP and PS3 both used.

The small PlayStation did have the official designation of PSOne though.

Didn't Ukraine get invaded during other such drills? Wasn't it a 'special military operation' near the border?

SlothMama ,

No, I don't think you understand, sorry. They might actually if we don't watch carefully, who is to say?

SlothMama ,

This is the kind of detail that makes me think it was initially written by AI and then passed over by a human.

SlothMama ,

Same, both Digg leading to Reddit, and Reddit to Lemmy

SlothMama ,

I can hear the blood flowing in my head, including hearing my own pulse via the same sound.

SlothMama ,

Never heard this, interesting. I usually only hear it in places with low background noise, it kinda reminds me of the sound a CRT TV or something kinda like electricity, it's not really like those things, but it's the closest thing I can think of.

I can also hear myself blink if I have silence in a room.

I also actually do have a thyroid condition, but that could be pure coincidence.

SlothMama ,

Ukraine is absolutely not winning, but propaganda and deception is really important in war. It's important for Ukraine to have the world think they have a chance otherwise people are less likely to assist in a lost cause.

SlothMama ,

It's absolutely a forgone conclusion and your assertions are unhinged. Ukraine is losing eminently, and actively. They have lost, permanently a lot of territory and have trouble keeping the lights on. The economy is entirely decimated and without foreign weapons and monetary aid they would fall within weeks.

SlothMama ,

It's a stupid comment practice where they claim ownership of their comment and place what they think is a binding and effective license against AI using that comment.

It literally does nothing. This is the modern equivalent of making a post on Facebook to assert that you have rights and control of your comments there.

Beyond the tools for editing and deletion you have no such rights in the Fediverse and it's a good way to demonstrate you don't understand how anything works.

Nothing stops anyone or any entity from indexing, ingesting, or scraping federated content.

SlothMama ,

Largely agree but I think there are one it two more camps.

  • People who feel threatened to irrelevance as artists trying to use art as their primary means to make money

  • People who realize that CEOs and higher up people in companies actually do intend to replace human workers as soon as they can, even before it's properly viable.

I'm pro AI, but I largely see the AI backlash as inventing complex moral justification to oppose it when the core issues are it's impact on the livelihood of artists under capitalism.

Obviously AI art is just as valid as human art, and there is nothing inherently special about human creations. We are actually just biological machines and our behavior and output is easily emulatable.

SlothMama ,

Does this irradiate us? I mean, if this is the result of a CME, and the atmosphere is responding to it, isn't a natural conclusion that we're receiving a measurable amount of radiation across the globe throughout this event?

SlothMama ,

You probably could.

SlothMama ,

I watched with no sound and from pure behavior I'm certain he is aware it's there and is likely involved

What animated film or tv show is this? ( i.imgur.com )

For me the first thing that comes to mind is Tales from Earthsea. I don't think it's excellent or anything and has plenty of problems but people act like it killed their dog. While it has its problems that have been covered extensively, I think it has a beautiful atmosphere and art....

SlothMama ,

Love The Last Airbender movie and people basically think I'm trolling when I share that. I've watched it multiple times, I love it, I like it better than the Netflix series even. One of my all time favorite movies.

SlothMama ,

It's so irritating how people try to tell me my opinion on this movie is wrong. Yes, I'm absolutely completely serious, and I know other people that enjoy it too.

Try to spend time off the Internet hivemind and realize that most people's opinions are themselves actually viral.

I also unironically love Forspoken and count it among the best games I've ever played. I think it's not even close to as bad as people claim and the opinion that it's bad it's viral and mited in social momentum.

I form my own, independent ideas on things I like and typically disregard the opinions of others. I am not trolling, I love the movie, it's one of my favorites.

How dare someone vote me down for expressing my opinions.

SlothMama ,

The internet is full of boobs, Lemmy is no exception. Ripley's Believe It or Not, neither is your mom.

Please don't think this is actually hateful porfis

SlothMama ,

For the mom is heavy and full of boobs

SlothMama ,

I've always thought this, and thought it strange we assumed other creatures experienced lesser levels of sentience.

SlothMama ,

I can't begin to describe how much I disagree with this. The speed limit is the limit to how fast you are legally allowed to drive. No lane legally enables you to go faster. The attitudes normalizing speeding are stupid. You're not entitled to go dangerous speeds.

SlothMama ,

Counterpoint. This isn't the law everywhere, and also lots of the laws codifying a left lane as a passing / fast lane happened after I started driving, so from my perspective they're part of a new perspective on it, so my values on this are grounded from a different viewpoint.

SlothMama ,

Y'all are really arguing that driving 10 over the speed limit, which is illegal in every single United State is less illegal than staying in the left lane and it's such a strange modern attitude.

SlothMama ,

Yeah nothing about this seems like it shouldn't be obvious, it takes some time for everything to fail, just like being 'alive' and having a single organ fail, you can be in various states of 'alive'.

SlothMama ,

This has been a thing in the States for about 15 years, it's not new. If it's just now becoming a thing where you live, understand that things like Gas TV, or ads for products or fuel additives were around since the late 2000s and early 2010s

SlothMama ,

Illegal at a Federal level, but legal on a state level is a weird type of ambiguous, but the states it is legal in your won't be raided by local police, and probably Even Federal Police.

SlothMama ,

Borgonzola and Camembert are good alternatives.

SlothMama ,

Pharmacy Tech is not a stable or well paying job to be completely honest.

SlothMama ,

I made $9.35 an hour, licensed a decade ago.

SlothMama ,

That still tracks though, Sim City 2000 was the Pinnacle of the series

A State Supreme Court Just Issued Another Devastating Rebuke of the U.S. Supreme Court ( slate.com )

The Hawaii Supreme Court handed down a unanimous opinion on Wednesday declaring that its state constitution grants individuals absolutely no right to keep and bear arms outside the context of military service. Its decision rejected the U.S. Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Second Amendment, refusing to interpolate...

SlothMama ,

I think this also. I don't think this is good, but it's not without precedent considering how Federal law and marijuana legalization works on a State level superceding Federal.

Truthfully this is just another ruling denying Federal as law of the land.

SlothMama ,

Exactly. A right shouldn't be able to be revoked, otherwise by definition it's not a right.

SlothMama ,

Sure, that's true, that's why there are different types of rights, look up natural rights versus things like inalienable rights. At the end of the day all rights are just ideas and concepts, but still, I think calling it a right and threatening to take it away in the context of his trial is no bueno

SlothMama ,

I think this is goofy. More than half my life I've heard the word transexual and I certainly don't think it's offensive.

SlothMama ,

I prefer transexual if I'm honest though, Transgender feels flimsier. I'm not trying to transcend the idea of what gender you see, I'm trying to transcend the boundaries of biological sex

That is implicitly more powerful to me.

SlothMama ,

I also prefer transexual and wish it hadn't been discarded for transgender. Feels like a euphemism train, but transcending the idea of what gender I am, versus the boundaries of biological sex isn't as strong of an idea or conceptual framework to me.

SlothMama ,

That wasn't the early days though, maybe for you, but that's still pretty recent ( within last 15 years )

SlothMama ,

We're talking about the history of the Internet, which 15 appears ago, in 2008, was already just a little over 20 years old. Basically, 15 years ago, was over half the life of the Internet ago, and not 'the early days'.

Oregon Supreme Court won’t remove Trump from ballot for now, says it’s waiting on SCOTUS ( www.cnn.com )

The Oregon Supreme Court on Friday declined to hear a bid to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot based on the 14th Amendment’s “insurrectionist ban,” saying it’s waiting for the US Supreme Court to rule on the issue....

SlothMama ,

Has a presidential candidate ever been removed from the ballot at the State level before historically?

SlothMama ,

Attitudes about gays and transgenders actually got worse coming from the 1960s into the 1980s. The sexual revolution actually created a generation far more open and accepting, and the culture that lead to things like the Satanic panic, war on drugs, and resurgence of patriotism and religiosity in the United States actually made things worse for gay and trans.
