I agree to a certain extend, but that brings us to the question of how that content is going to be discovered by people not knowing about Lemmy. With search engines being only a shadow of their former selves, and Reddit shadowbanning Lemmy URLs that's probably another issue we should keep in mind

IIRC, Blaze (mod here) got banned under similar circumstances.

Hello,

That's indeed why I opened this community in the first place. For people interested, you can have a look at this post for the details (open the spoiler): https://lemmy.world/post/11446250

Reflecting on the firefish/calckey "moment"

which was about a year ago now, I can't help but suspect it was a small event with wider implications on the dominance of #mastodon in the #fediverse

I think it was the last chance to direct the twitter migration energy into discovering new/different fedi platforms.

And it was blown, with alt-social in a weird steady/waiting state that's smaller I suspect, than what many hoped for.

To me, FireFish got replaced by IceShrimp. Good looking interface, nice features (Antenna) and regular releases.

IIRC, Catodon development is currently halted (https://catodon.social/notes/9rl77swzw25jjq7x).

Sharkey I don't know

There really is a whole *keys forks lore ha ha

Hello,

The two communities you listed seem more adequate to promote existing communities, I've done it in the past when reviving a community.

About keeping activity, don't worry, I'm sure we'll done fine, we are regular posters after all, if there's a group with a high chance of posting, it's this one.

An another note, we could maybe promote those two communities to a wider audience, maybe !asklemmy ?

Blaze ,
@Blaze@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The newcommunities one in particular didn’t take issue with it? That was part of why I was asking, as I didn’t think they would appreciate posts about existing communities, but if they don’t mind then I take it it’s a non-issue.

Nope, see this post for instance: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/11513256

On the last part, it may not hurt to see if different AskLemmy communities would be up for including them in their sidebars, and maybe featured posts with pointers to Lemmyverse and !lemmy411 if they don’t have them already.

Yeah, that would be a good one. I'm not sure how to really do it though, I know the !asklemmy moderation team applies the rules very literally, so they might just flag any post there as "not a question" and remove it

If you look at any profile page, it's the classic Mastodon layout: https://veganism.social/@mascottus

The probably just customized the home page

If you really want something a bit less austere than Mastodon you can have a look at https://iceshrimp.social/

An update regarding the future of m/AskKbin (where we are headed towards) - AskKbin - kbin.social ( kbin.social )

Hello everyone, check out my announcement post linked above and if you don't know who I am, check out my past post to learn more about me and It would mean a lot of you show your support for my future iniatives inside the fediverse!...

I found my latest job there. Some companies tend to mostly post in LinkedIn rather than other job boards. I guess it's probably country dependent

What happens when someone posts to a local version of a community whose home instance no longer exists? I assume local users can see the post, but it doesn’t federate to any other instances?

Correct

Agree with your other point too

But not every instance has the same governance as lemmy.zip.

Agreed

Would you also be fine with some community becoming de facto reference on beehaw.org or hexbear.net or lemmy.world?

No, and that's why I listed SJW and lemm.ee in my OP (to be honest, I should probably change LW to lemmy.zip)

Beehaw is too deferated indeed.

Hexbear comes with their own specific stance.

LW, I feel like they are okay for now. The major issue I see with them is the federation with Threads, but that can always change (and probably will if we get millions of trolls at once)

I guess my idea would be to have a subset of instances that are compatible, rules and federation wise (lemmy.zip, lemm.ee, SJW, Reddthat.com), and spread communities among them, with one reference community on one single instance.

LW centralization is an issue on its own, but that's the subject of another thread already.

Blaze OP ,
@Blaze@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I think it also depends how popular the topic is.

Gaming, as you said, exists on several platforms, with different mods and teams because it's a quite popular topic.

On the other hand, I also regularly browse !android and !android, and they seem pretty similar to me (be it rules or content wise), they are also lacking some activity, so they would probably benefit from being merged, and having one as the reference.

Blaze OP ,
@Blaze@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I see where they come from, but from a new user perspective, it's quite confusing to see too similar-looking communities, more or less similarly active, with more or less the same type of content, and not know where to post

!android is more software development oriented, and !android has the typical lemmy.ml spin to it.

I’m not sure how either side would agree to “merge”, since wanting self-governance was the reason the split happened in the first place.

Indeed, but on that point I'm not sure how the LW is currently moderated. The moderators don't seem that active (it's a trend I've noticed among a few LW communities). If I have some time in the coming days, I might contact them to see if they are still interested in managing that community, or if uniting forces with lemdro.id would make more sense

So currently, just finding a little bit of good visual content (usually accompanied by a link and or mini-review) and posting once on a near-daily basis seems to keep snagging users without having to do anything else.

Thanks for sharing, definitely my experience as well. Usually, if the content is a bit appealing, it will end up in the 3 first pages of Top of 12 hours
