Is everything the worst?

I'm 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can't help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the political...

Schlemmy ,

I'm not saying it's social media, but it's social media.
You're connected to negativity 24/7. The algorithm feeds on negativity because that is what makes us stay on there.

I've got something to change your thinking. At least it helped me 17 years ago.

Hans Rosling - The best stats you've ver seen

I don't want to dismiss the facts. There are terrible things going on but overall we're living our best lives at the same time.

Rutger Bregman | Where do we go from here?

And hey! I'm 43 too. You have a whole life ahead of you. You still can go in any direction you want to go in.

Schlemmy ,

I'm not doing it. No. Bad!

Schlemmy ,

Veritasum is amazing. Recently I rediscovered them with the video about the SAT question everybody got wrong. My mind was blow.

Schlemmy ,

And then you see Adam Savage geeking out, nearly in tears about gauge blocks in his workshop.

Ingress. I was obsessed with it. Couldn't stop playing.

Family trips were awkward. I would make detours and hide the reason but just pointed out there was something awesome they should see.

I also took part in global ops where I met irl with other players to move keys.

When I think about it the real life component of that game is amazing.

Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

I get sick from the sleazeball slimey replies like ''I'm so happy to have been part of project a''. People chiming in to shamelesly self promote on other people's posts.

Schlemmy ,

I'm still a bit confused about the instances and the political alignment of people on certain instances. I'm on Lemmy.ml but apparently people can be quite toxic on that instance.

Having to subscribe to the same subject on different instances feels a bit weird. I always wonder what I'm missing out on.

It also seems like we're missing some critical mass but I'm over Reddit, that's the bottom line.

Schlemmy ,

It's the best app when it comes to functionality. It has it all.

Schlemmy ,
  • You can schedule messages
  • Have supergroups, subgroups, broadcasts, admin roles in groups,...
  • Channels can be configured in various ways. For example, you can post messages and choose the type of previews links render.
  • You can add voting options to posts
  • Members of the channel can only reply in threads so the replies are bundled.
  • You can decide wheter new group members can view chat history or not.
  • Members can be muted.
  • Bots can be built withing the app
  • Chats can be arranged in folders
    *...

I could go on.

Schlemmy ,

I get it. That's why I use Plus messenger. It's a better, more customisable UI. Private chats, groups and channels are on a different page, if you want it.

Unfortunately I use Discord, WhatsApp, Signal, Element (Matrix) and SimpleX all combined because my contacts are spread out. Looking forward to secure interoperability.

Schlemmy ,

I'm on the waiting list. I hope they get e2ee sorted out.

Are we all fucked?

I'm worried for the world. All I've been thinking about is WW3 and this shit makes me want to vomit. I can't even smoke weed anymore without having a near panic attack. I feel unmotivated. I wake up and immediately just want to go back to bed. I'm not trying to spread fear but the Doomsday clock is 90 seconds till midnight,...

Schlemmy ,

It's true, but that makes it even more unsettling. Every petty crime gets blown up by media, every time something happens people start screaming that we need camera's and more cops on the streets. I used to work in the bar scene in our city twenty years ago. There were bar fights on a regular base. Now one bar fight in a year makes the national news.

Schlemmy ,

Bitwarden can generate password phrases. Some other password managers too. In the occasion you have to type out your password a password phrase is a lot easier.

Schlemmy ,

You should indeed use a password manager to randomize the generated password phrases. Bitwarden adds capitals, numbers and other characters to the password phrases.

Schlemmy ,

Those government id based login methods are quite common and very secure. Belgium has a system that used your ID, your phone number and your phone to verify your login. A lot of EU banks have been using a OTP generated by a dedicated hardware that looks like a tiny calculator. The Netherlands has a dedicated app that is verified by your government id and that uses a qr to verify your identity.

Schlemmy ,

Thank God for GDPR. That would be impossible in the EU. ID's can only used in very specific cases that are detailed in the law.

Schlemmy ,

Pflugerville. My mother has lived there for a while. She moved back to Europe when she got pregnant.

Schlemmy ,

Don't. Just don't. Ban this community or you're lost.

Schlemmy ,

True, an addiction adds negative effects to the equation.

Schlemmy ,

75/70 at 23 euros a month. It's cheap and enough for our family to simultaneously stream HD content.
Gigabit internet is available but I'm not really sure it's necessary. My son has 14 ping while gaming. That's satisfactory.

I'm increasingly unhappy with the limits on AI text generation and I have heard that it's not that hard to do it on a laptop oneself. What is the best path forward?

I saw Generative AI for Beginners from Microsoft on GitHub. I've looked at https://fmhy.pages.dev/ai but I'm not sure what I'm really looking for....

Schlemmy ,

By far, Negroni.

1/3 dark vermouth
1/3 Campari
1/3 gin

Add to a low and wide glass with a fair amount of ice. Smoked rosemary and orange peel for extra infusion of flavour and stir.

You can experiment with the brands and types of vermouth and gin but Campari stays.

Is osmand normally terrible?

I just tried osmand. It took forever to locate me and then the map would freeze for minutes, then the blue arrow would finally jump to my location. It seems useless for real time navigation, is that normal? Google maps works fine on the phone (Android) so it's not the hardware. Is there maybe some setting I haven't found?...

Schlemmy ,

Nope. But it can be demanding when using online maps. Try to have your most used area downloaded in your phone.

Schlemmy ,

This hits hard. I was 29. My daughter was 3 and my god, I wish I was diagnosed earlier. After that it still took me several years to get a hold of my life.

supermarket club cards

Hey I'm sure you all know how sketchy club cards are for collecting your data. But I do begrudge paying slightly higher prices just for valuing my privacy. I was wondering if there was any way to sign up to these things whilst limiting the data they have access to. Would it be enough to sign up with fake details and never use...

Schlemmy ,

You could just give them fake personal information. In the end, if they really want they could identify you because you probably pay with your card?

Schlemmy ,

I have reread several books but most of them have several years or decades in between.

Especially Terry Pratchetts' books are better after and worthy of a second read.

Schlemmy ,

I struggle with the abundance of characters from time to time. I've reread some of the books just because I forgot who, what, when...

The tv shows always are a compromise. They just don't have the time to build the characters and have to force some stuff because of that.

I have this guilty pleasure. I've reread 'Interview with the vampire' after seeing the movie and even liked the book pore afterwards.

Schlemmy ,

The best part of rereading those books is the hidden puns and jokes that you only get when you get older. And yes, commander Vîmes and Moist are excellent characters.

Schlemmy ,

Not a brick and mortar store but www.akkuteile.de has what you need

TIL "several nations recognize the right of prisoners to attempt to escape prison or jail, including Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Mexico due to what is seen as basic human nature..." ( www.grunge.com )

Source: https://www.grunge.com/1172545/why-it-is-legal-to-attempt-to-escape-prison-in-germany-and-some-other-countries/...

Schlemmy ,

Yes, but in Belgium as in most countries you still get charged for damaging property or hurting poeple if you do so while escaping.
A few years ago a mother was exempt from charges when she tried to assist her son in escaping because that is what every mother would do if they loved their child.

Schlemmy ,

I'm wheezing. Never heard it before but the image is livid in my head.
