So a lot of folks on here don't boost posts with images that don't have image descriptions, and that's a pretty common thing people talk about.

I replied to someone taking a poll about preferences people who use screen readers and said "I currently do things x way but I'm curious what people will say"

Someone responds to me to tell me that they're disabled and can't do alt text, and so how dare I not boost posts without alt text? What a terrible "ally".

And just... Why?

NanoBookReview ,
@NanoBookReview@zirk.us avatar

@artemis Yo tell those people about and its variations! I'm disabled as fuck so some days I use that and a helpful stranger will write the alt text for me and then I edit the post. I also follow the hashtag so that I can provide alt text for other people when I'm feeling good.

Do birds have a sense of smell?

I ask because I swear a little tiny bird just landed on a branch outside my window and scared itself.

I am writing by an open window and enjoying the breeze and the sun light as it streams in. I have a giant tree that overshadows the window, I think it's called a spruce tree. I love the way it smells and looks it is amazing and a key feature of the purchase.

So this little bird sits on a branch for about half a second and then chirped a sharp and loud chirp and absolutely flapped birdy wings straight away from the window.

I am laughing imagining the bird landing to see what was going on inside that house and getting a wiff of giant swamp panther and just absolutely losing his little birdy mind in panic and fear to dash away.

NanoBookReview ,
@NanoBookReview@zirk.us avatar

@si_irini @mentallyalex Most of them have a pretty terrible sense of smell. I think there's a small handful that can smell okay. I wanna say it's limited to a few species of vulture?

NanoBookReview ,
@NanoBookReview@zirk.us avatar

@mentallyalex @si_irini Oh I once surprised a mourning dove just by standing out in the open. I got to watch it slam on the brakes mid-air and do a 180 when it suddenly realized there was a person standing on the patio.

    I already got one comment claiming solar power won’t work because “night” and another that made up nonsense about batteries.

    Batteries are part of solidifying the renewable energy grid.

    To those that say batteries aren’t clean or are costly, that might be partially true now, but they get cleaner and cheaper every year. Current deployments while maybe suboptimal are simply a step on the path. 1/2

    Batteries are taking on gas plants to power California’s nights:

    @NanoBookReview@zirk.us avatar

    @TonyStark The funny part about grid level batteries is that we already have a large number of solutions at different power and energy levels. We just gotta actually build the things and install them.

    If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

    Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

    @mekkaokereke Those Chinese cars are extremely subsidized and very low quality. People with access to both "Western" and Chinese cars are favoring the western cars, despite being more expensive because the Chinese ones just plain aren't very good. Hopefully they'll get better with time, like a lot of Chinese products have, but their auto industry is still ridiculously subsided. Like, those cars cost roughly the same to make as any other car, and they're losing money selling them.

    NanoBookReview ,
    @NanoBookReview@zirk.us avatar

    @mekkaokereke I've heard conflicting anecdotes about the quality of these cars, but regardless, I hope they catch up.

    Independent of "fair" government incentives, I generally think cars should be more expensive, not less. Cars are still one of the worst forms of transportation from an environmental point of view. We shouldn't be subsiding any of them, we should be taxing the shit out of gas vehicles. Making our own cars cheaper is the wrong environmental play.

    I had like 20 seconds to look out of th bathroom window before POTS made standing too much, but I used them well. First a family of jackdaws playingly flying, then i looked at the water and saw a big goose (Canadian i'd guess) climb on land from the water. She was followed by at least 5 small geese who did the same.

    Couldn't stand there long enough for them all climb on land, but yeah, barely awake and already saw beauty.

    I was feeling a bit lost yesterday, my hands seem to have forgotten how to paint, and everything was looking like a child’s daubings. Who am I if I’m not an artist? Anyway, long story short, but I’m being more philosophical today and remembering that this has happened before, many times, and you have to just go away and do something else and after a bit gently start sketching again with just a pencil or some charcoal or something.

    A guy who shot at a delivery driver for pulling into his driveway is ONLY getting charged with aggravated assault. In Tennessee, the distinction between attempted murder and aggravated assault is intent. If you can't prove intent to kill the victim, it's not attempted murder. The shooter claimed he was just trying to disable the driver's car.

    But like, COME ON, why else you gonna shoot at someone? I say this as very pro gun rights person. Guns are for killing.

    If you really want to get upset about something going on in open source / open data space, I would suggest considering Niantic.

    After years of refusing any communication with , not to mention -any- kind of support. Niantic joined the Linux Foundations @linuxfoundation Overture (for substantial amounts of money), but its customers continue to vandalize OSM, burning lots of volunteer time at multiple levels.
