Face to face with a Wasp Beetle. Although this Wasp-mimicking Longhorn looks and moves like the it impersonates, and appears rather fearsome viewed close up and head on, it is harmless. Photographed yesterday at Brandon Marsh.

Looking down on a Wasp Beetle on a leaf. As in the previous photo, we can see the Beetle's black head with its yellow markings and longish, thick antennae, its black thorax with a yellow band around it near the head (and a further, thinner yellow band near the abdomen), and its six long, jointed, reddish-coloured legs. In addition we get a better look at the wing cases covering the abdomen: they are black, with long yellow stripes.

Head-on, close-up view of a Wasp Beetle, Clytus arietis on a leaf. The Beetle's head is mostly black in colour, with some yellow markings by the eyes and on the mouthparts. A yellow band around the black thorax, just behind the head, can also be seen, as can some of the yellow markings on what little we can see of the wing cases covering the top of the abdomen. Two dark, thick, longish antennae extend from the head, and six long, jointed, reddish-coloured legs from the abdomen.

    I found another stag beetle, she’s trying to climb me like a tree with the determination of a lady on a mission for uppies, her claws are scratchy and I love her :blobaww:

    A close up of an Eyed Hawk-Moth on a palm. The shot is very close focusing in on an exposed hindwing showing the eye. The eye itself starts indigo in the centre with a ring of light blue and then a thicker ring of black to finish. The eye is on a largely buff-coloured wing but to there is a flash of crimson pink to the upper part of the hindwing where the top of the eye is. The crimson pink is partially obscured by the stretched out forewing.

    a large angular-winged moth on the back of fingers. Its wingspan covers all four fingers. It is largely grey with a black head and some dark marking on the inner edge of its forewings. Its wings are large and a little clothes hanger shape, initially slope away from the head before forming a square shape at the bottom wing edge, and then sloping sharply hack up to the head. It has two creamy, feathered antennae. The background is blurred green vegetation.

    Here's the syrphid fly larva I found yesterday. I kept trying to get the eyes in focus but gave up, learning later that they don't have them (never got that memo for some reason). Any guesses on genus? I'm rearing it!

    Ropalidia revolutionalis, the stick-nest brown paper wasp—because it builds long, thin nests out of a plant-pulp paper and is brown; descriptive names are helpful! This one's just starting her nest: each of those cells will soon hold an egg.

    I see these little guys in my garden every summer, hoverflies. Many mimic wasps or bees with markings of black and yellow but hoverflies do not sting.

    A shaky video of green moss tube with a little brown worm inside walking on my finger. There are sounds of trickling water, sirens and if you listen carefully you can hear the cat asking for her dinner (don’t worry I fed her right after)

    The worm is slightly further out, leggies outstretched reaching for something to grab onto. There’s tiny whiskers on its face
    Stretching a bit further, throwing its head back
    The word has turned sideways now, 6 little legs reaching out to hold onto my finger, only a millimetre away almost got it!
