Republicanism under Trump is obsessed with doing actual harm to people who are different from them or do not agree with them politically. Not indifference, but actual injury and death.

It’s a violent fascist movement.

The media coverage of Trump should be full of national security experts who explain that he is a domestic threat and how best that threat can be neutralized by Americans voting in 2024.

But his emails: Trump’s increasingly unhinged calls for violence:

I keep trying to give The Guardian a break but now there’s an article in it implying that Trump and Biden are equally bad cognitively and that Biden has had bad plastic surgery (a rumor first started by the right) as if even if that was true (and people shouldn’t be judged on appearance one way or another) it would impact his suitability for public office. It wouldn’t.

So I’m done with them again. That was brief.

Senate sends package bolstering nuclear power sector to Biden’s desk

The Senate on Tuesday passed a package aimed at bolstering the nation’s nuclear power sector, sending it to President Biden’s desk. The vote was 88-2. While a White House spokesperson did not respond to questions about whether Biden will sign the bill, National Climate Adviser Ali Zaidi appeared to post on X in support of...

@philip_cardella
In my opinion, had we not entertained so much fear over facts material regarding nuclear power in the past, we wouldn’t be dealing with as much extreme weather from undealt with global warming that we are now.

Most people wrongly cite waste and safety. Nuclear waste is a solved problem.

Spent rods are stored in cooling pools for differing amounts of time, usually a year or two. They're then stored in dry casks. Dry casks are completely safe. 1/2

TonyStark ,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@philip_cardella

Dry casks are tough as well, able to withstand a direct bomb blast or any real natural disaster.

Many people who go on against nuclear are basing their opinions on things other than current technology. It’s like watching an airplane disaster movie and basing your flight safety opinion on that.

I’m a numbers person and numbers say this:

Death rates per unit of electricity production:
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/death-rates-from-energy-production-per-twh

It would be wise on our part to at least invest in research. 2/2

TonyStark ,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@philip_cardella Anytime. I don’t think it’s the ultimate solution by itself but should be a part of the mix.

Another overlooked aspect is physical size: nuclear reactors, compared to the amount of energy they output, take up very little physical space. This is in contrast to wind farms mostly, but also solar farms. This is important because it means a) humans have more space to do stuff, and b) because the environment and wildlife will be able to do better with humans taking up less land.

Humane and pragmatic common sense, and we're going to have hundreds of thousands of people able to live more easily in a country they already call home. I wish Biden had taken this tack towards immigration from the beginning in many other ways, but this is a tremendous good that will change the lives of so many for the better and he should absolutely get credit for it.

  1. Protecting women's control over their bodies from right wing zealots.
  2. Keeping an egomaniac sociopath away from the White House.

  4. Not giving Ukraine to Putin.

And in November, I will be voting for Joe Biden regardless. Republicans appointed the SCOTUS justices who overturned Roe. Trump appointed the judge who tried to ban a safe medication in order to punish women. Hardly over for one obvious good ruling that’s the bare minimum.

I agree with finding allies as I boosted this a couple of hours back, but I’ve seen “unity, be quiet” being used as a way to try and shut marginalized people expressing their concerns down.
