To a large degree, the point of RAID is to not care about drive reliability, trust the process. Also, you seem to conflate RAID with backup ("RAID is not a backup"), you want both. In a NAS, you're probably better off with RAID5 + backup.

In a system that can take a drive failure, the current datahoarder zeitgeist is Manufacturer Recertified (Enterprise) Drives, see ServerPartDeals.com if you're a yank, other countries have their own options.

Seriously, U.S., get your shit together. This crap spills out all over the world thanks to cultural imperialism (Hollywood etc.), no beuno.

I'd suggest you move toward a backup approach ("RAID is not a backup") first. Assuming you have 2x10Tb, get a 3rd and copy half of your files to it, disconnect it, and now half your files are protected. Save, get another, copy the other half, now all your files are protected. If you're trying to do RAID on USB, don't, you are already done, otherwise (using SATA or better) you can proceed to build your array in an orderly fashion.

Seeing as no-one's answering the question in terms of privacy (although I agree with their sentiment)

Trust. You have to trust that they will respect your privacy. They actually talk a good game, are probably superior in privacy to the average android (but not GrapheneOS or Linux) in so much as they fend off other entities trying to hoover your data, mostly so they have exclusive access (at least to metadata, actual data may currently even be secure but that can change and possession is nine tenths and all that). At the end of the day, they're a greedy mega-corporation and cannot be trusted if they need to keep that line going up this quarter. I much prefer transparent systems that keep me in control and possession of my data.

I like their hardware, excellent build quality (shame about long term support and e-waste though). Will probably pick up a cheap M1 Air once Asahi linux stabilises.

There's heaps, CO2, ecological health, happiness, life satisfaction, health, wealth equality just off the top of my head. Makes sense to use some combined and probably iterated (perhaps (direct) democratically) metric, one of the reasons we're in this mess is oversimplification to just money as a metric.

RAID is your friend. If you can't afford to lose one, you might have a bad time (applies to all drives anyway). Manufacturer refurbs are your best bet.

That's not a short answer, a good answer, but not a short one.

Just Stop Oil supporters found not guilty in petrol pump case ( juststopoil.org )

On 28 April 2022, Just Stop Oil supporters blocked the entrances to Clacket Lane Services on the M25 by sitting in the road with Just Stop Oil banners. They also decommissioned the petrol pumps by breaking the display glass and covering it with spray paint. This action was taken in support of their demand for the UK government...

During Year of Extremes, Carbon Dioxide Levels Surge Faster than Ever ( today.ucsd.edu )

“Not only is CO2 now at the highest level in millions of years, it is also rising faster than ever. Each year achieves a higher maximum due to fossil-fuel burning, which releases pollution in the form of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,” said Ralph Keeling, director of the Scripps CO2 program that manages the...

And one that could handle a decent sized library (10s of thousands). One of the few places I'm happy to pay for it, Poweramp will let you buy a licence without google services. If you've already bought it and are on GrapheneOS you can enable play services for (3?) days and it stays good after you disable play services. I seldom shill, but here we are...

Nice question, you've got a lot of answers, most being major projects outside the scope of an individual, still, interesting pain points.

May I suggest you edit your OP with a list of viable options for individual devs or small teams to try ?

If you're doing weird shit, partition the 4TBs into 2x2TB, now you have 10x2TB. Or use unraid / mergerfs + SnapRaid.

Somewhere there was an asshole who made a decision, one of our failures as a (global, makes it harder) society is failing to hold responsibility accountable. Do the crime, do the time.

Nothing to complain about, general appreciation post. Boffo people, well done!

It's been around a year since a lot of us quit Reddit, myself included. I'm happy with Lemmy, but I still feel a bit lost online since leaving the old site. Discussion?

Been thinking of making a post like this for some time, apologies if some of this is not completely relevant: this community seems more like it's about Reddit the platform/product than Reddit the social "thing", but I'm sure a lot of people have similar experiences to mine. Maybe on some instances more than others....

Happy you're hanging around. As one of the post-capitalist space hippies, I'm probably awful, but I do value diversity.

MalReynolds ,

I'm still using it for niche interests, via FreshRSS and RedditBridge, there's little alternative to that reach as I always hated Facebook (never joined curmudgeon) and never took to twitter. I keep ratcheting up the votes needed to hit my feed in many subreddits, but that never helps, should work out how to make it weekly, monthly, becoming a chore. Like it here, as a linux scifi etc type, but miss the diversity.

Remote desktop for Wayland?

I only just switched to Linux last month that time I don't know what Wayland or X11 is and I just use Linux like normal without knowing I'm using Wayland (KDE), now since I'm already configured my KDE desktop on Wayland and I don't wanna do it again, so I'm looking for a remote desktop that work under Wayland not locally but...
