"I bypassed the compressor!"

Still sucks that some audience minds associate character to actor a bit too much. Rei's actor didn't do anything wrong, and she deserves future chances.

Katana314 ,

This might actually be a very good idea.

My first thought was to abuse something that rhymes with "Mild Topography". But that would likely lead to legal repercussions for both you and Microsoft. A better solution would be to store hundreds of medical records in your Documents folder. You have a right to store your own medical information. If Microsoft is uploading those to their servers without your consent, and without appropriate HIPAA measures, that smells like an extremely silver-wrapped lawsuit.

Katana314 ,

My god, we just witnessed the King of the Hill “Are y’all with the cult?” meme in action.

Katana314 ,

It’s interesting how much the vote DOES resemble a trolley problem. Generally, the only real point in favor of not pulling the lever is “You’re killing someone, it’s immoral to get involved. Life shouldn’t be in your hands.”

Which is still setting aside all the conscious choice by other human beings that IS happening come election season. Probably the biggest way it diverges is that a trolley is moving under its own “natural” momentum. In reality, it’s as though some Nazis are pulling the trolley along the track to the 5 people.

Katana314 ,

In a world where a large majority of America has recognized it was asinine to ever consider voting for the bad side, it becomes more practical to have third party alternatives.

Katana314 ,

Unintentionally sexual things are okay. Hence why they still serve bananas and eggplants in school cafeterias.

Katana314 ,

But my favorite hobby at home was spooning raw flour into my mouth and washing it down with melted crayons…

Katana314 ,

Not just a weak mind. The weakest mind. I've talked to everyone, and they all tell me, they say: I've never seen a mind so weak. You won't find a weaker mind. (etc for 20 minutes)

Katana314 ,

It just about arguing in bad faith. You start with a conclusion you want in your mind, and then invent palatable excuses as to why that conclusion must be true.

It’s never been a logical route for their thoughts, just premise and emotion.

Katana314 ,

While I agree in the case of big box stores, the complaint isn’t necessarily valid.

For instance, if you said it about Bill Gates, it’d be misplaced. He gives a lot to charity - and does work to locate the best places to put that money to use. He also asks others to give money for said cause.

Katana314 ,

I have a fictional scenario I invented where a blind man is completely confused that “maroon” is a shade of red, not blue, given that it relates to the sea.

Katana314 ,

The issue that caused this topic to arise wasn't of other people having opinions we didn't like. It wasn't even a case of arguing in bad faith, eg deflecting truth, or disguising real intentions by making arguments the owner doesn't believe for some other purpose (those are also bad, but generally don't get such a response).

The issue was specific moderator/instance-ownership censorship. People's posts were being removed without warning when they were making respectful, good-faith arguments - that disagreed with the politics of lemmy.ml. Worse, they were attempting to be stealthy about this removal so that no one victimized by this censorship was aware of it.

For reference, I'm gonna be a Biden voter. If someone posted "Biden is a piece of trash old man" then I'd disagree with them, but they'd have every right to put that opinion up.

Katana314 ,

The complaint is about lemmy.ml. This post is hosted on lemmy.world.

Katana314 ,

I had a calm, respectful comment about China's attempts to censor the Tiananmen Square photo removed for no reason, and without my knowledge. The idea that they're conducting "normal moderation" is laughable.

Katana314 ,

This post is about informing people about the nature of that instance; something many people don't necessarily intend to interface with when they're just exploring their favorite niche topic community which simply happens to be there. We don't want people to unintentionally end up in that crowd without knowing about their principles or lack thereof.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

Katana314 ,

I am one of the removed comments and just found out about it here. Does the Lemmy standard really not send direct messages to users when one of their messages was removed? If it was an actual Rule 1 violation (which of course, it wasn't) I'd like to know.

Katana314 ,

Might be time to pull a "body cam policy" and take the fun out of moderating.

Katana314 ,

I mean, most decent superhero movies I see acknowledge inner city chaos to be bad. As soon as a horrible villain starts throwing fireballs, they’re trying to get civilians out, save people amidst chaos, etc.

There’s maybe another conversation to have on property damage; I think there’s not much story there due to the way insurance works. To us, these chaotic battles happen every summer, but in these worlds they’re rare freak occurrences - just like earthquakes.

Katana314 ,

I’m vaguely aware of that, but that’s also why I never really lined up for Zack Snyder movies on release. He has a uniquely ignorant take on those heroes.

Katana314 ,

The main thing to me is simply the Chinese government’s constant efforts to pretend it didn’t happen.

Contrast this with places like America, or especially Germany. Both countries have done awful things to minorities. They often put attention on those misdeeds to ensure future generations don’t repeat the mistakes. Now, it’s considered patriotic to protest poor government decisions.

Katana314 ,

sorry that was me, I needed to plug in my vacuum and forgot to plug the city back in afterward

Katana314 ,

I hope people realize that that Witcher quote "If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all." was explicitly written to be wrong, and only served as a "Before" of a maturing character arc.

Katana314 ,

That’s the joke. (They’re mocking “quiet quitting”)

Katana314 ,

I’ll say this: Though the result is the same, I feel much more okay with posts pushing a specific third party they’re inspired by than going the same “anybody else” route we take with Biden without actually naming someone or listing policies.

When they don’t name anyone, I’m more likely to agree with you it’s just a distraction unwilling to focus on a genuine plan of action.

Katana314 ,

This is ableism. Biden doesn’t mumble because of his age, but because he’s had issues with stuttering since he was young. To a few kids he’s even been an inspiring image for the fact he rehearses his speeches so well he rises above the impromptu stutters.

Katana314 ,

Biden is ancient and incomprehensible in half of his public appearances.

That’s the opposite of what you said. Are you concerned about what you can understand, or what you can’t?

Katana314 ,

The other important point to make:

It’s normal to view wild ideas like troves of automated users with some skepticism. But consider: Foreign entities would likely have a huge incentive to destabilize domestic elections. If you were them, and had plenty of spare personnel, and A.I. resources…what would you do?

Katana314 ,

Russia already interfered with the 2016 election, so they disagree with you.

AI doesn’t have to be used as an autoprompter. Paid workers can still review their output or use them for prompting.

If I were Chinese, I might suspect the US intelligence committee enacting foreign influence. But locally, they want functioning government so they get paid.

Also, besides the over-the-top insults, note this guy’s account is new.

Katana314 ,

I had a lot of fun with my Vita even without hacking it. It had a longer lifetime than people realize, in part through digital sales and indie games that were planning to do PS3/PS4 releases anyway.

Katana314 ,

I upvoted you for at least naming a potential candidate, rather than vaguely saying “someone else”.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

Katana314 ,

Most people would be fine with this in the case of a home user duplicating one or two copies for his kids to watch and as backups. But we have seen whenever a rule permits something, someone will work out the MAXIMUM way in which they can abuse it for profit. Give them an inch, and they take a mile.

Ideally, we could have laws that are really finely built to be specific to that first scenario. But I honestly don't know how you write those.

Katana314 ,

Even if we didn’t achieve fairness for trans people just yet, it’d be so fun if we took this logical determination of “Even if criminals break laws anyway, they can put friction on the act itself and help them be caught earlier” and push it back to the conservative topic of gun control; where they have claimed exactly the opposite.

It’s still bullshit on bathroom control because the two acts would be less than a minute apart with no likely witnesses. There’s far more demonstrable harm in gender exclusion in bathrooms.

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles ( www.psypost.org )

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it...

Katana314 ,

I just categorize my concerns to semi-autos; size is irrelevant. Australia went so far as to ban just about all of them, even though that’s a very broad category.

Katana314 ,

It’s honestly kind of a suitable explanation for why any evil society is called that - just out of silly rebelliousness.

Like how the evils of Christianity resulted in creation of a “church of Satan” that’s peaches and roses by comparison.

Katana314 ,

This is also an indicator of the world’s best insult as per the comic Basic Instructions:

“I find you argumentative and easily offended.”

Basically no one is allowed to respond to it.

Katana314 ,

It’s also not even that high up compared to some of the buildings dominating the New York City landscape now.

Katana314 ,

I hate that search engine degradation is what’s lead me to use AI more. Instead of searching past pages full of 8 ads for a waffle recipe, I ask Copilot or something: “Give me a basic waffle recipe”.

So much computation to go back to what the web used to be great at.

Katana314 ,

Some people have a hard time believing that the Democratic Party is not one whole monolith that always votes on party lines even when they disagree (that’s the other one)

Katana314 ,

There’s a comedian that pointed out this is why conservative groups garner so much support.

“Do you oppose abortion?” “No.” “Do you hate the gays?” “No.” “Do you think illegal immigrants should be shot?” “Yeah.” “Well, COME ON DOWN!”

Meanwhile, liberal groups after asking about 18 issues: “Are you vegan?” “No.” “Well, I BET you voted for TRUMP!!”

I miss when we could find common ground in politics.

Katana314 ,

Gee, I wonder WHO was taking actions to prevent that from coming out as universal healthcare. And I wonder WHICH SIDE of the aisle they were on.

Katana314 ,

I definitely have a better opinion of people who vote for third party candidates than people who don't vote at all. A major problem with our current elections is that it's far more mud-slinging about the opposition than positivity. If the race becomes a little bit less two-party, candidates might start talking about their advantages, rather than deriding the opponents.

That said, it will still do nothing healthy for this election - it's a long-term strategy, in a world where a bad president can do so much damage in the short term.

Just a quick post about trucks and SUVs

If you ever find yourself tempted to buy a truck and/or SUV, just remember one thing: they're not worth it. They're a societal nuisance. They're a massive pollutant. The maintenance, repair, and insurance will cost you a whole lot more. Aside from the aforementioned pollution, They're overall environmental impact is egregious....

Katana314 ,

I don’t have a source on this but I think I’ve heard that a large demographic of SUV buyers are actually women; people who have all too much experience being vulnerable in city life, and want something that puts them in a protected position.

Katana314 ,

The IRA?? Is this because I didn't pay my taxes?

Katana314 ,

Hey, go pet an alligator.

Studies show most alligators have no carnivorous intentions towards humans, and usually just want to get away. So probably most of the time they’ll just run off at worst. Maybe once in a while they might try biting back to remove a limb, but surely that won’t happen every single time.

Katana314 ,

When I boil down the very moment of his decision, I agree in the idea of self defense. But it's also why I'm generally opposed to filling an environment with high-lethality machines (be they guns, OR cars). It's naive to put confidence behind the minds in control of those objects. Highways, too, have a high rate of deaths; but they at least serve some useful purpose.

Katana314 ,

This meme template normally has the second person say something in reply that upsets the first, but leaves them speechless - so they just lower their eyebrows in frustration.

With no eyebrows, the fourth panel looks the same.

Katana314 ,

For the record, I oppose their choice of candidate. I think we’re better off encouraging voting as a whole, than encouraging people to fully give in to the two party system - even if I’m convinced by those arguments and plan to vote for Biden, I know other people have other perspectives and priorities.

On the other hand, we KNOW for sure that people who oppose voting as a whole are Russian bots or completely reprehensible bastards, and that is a very easy sentiment to stand by. We also know that there is one party that wins more often when more people decide to vote. I’ll let you guess which one.

I’d also say for future elections, putting more and more votes on third parties can warn the two parties that a pure message of “At least I’m not HITLER” is not viable enough.
