Does anyone else ever just realize that you're not even sure why you want a relationship at all?

As I've gained more and more close friends, more than I've ever had in my life, and some closer than I've ever had in my life, I've come to realize something recently. Despite the prevailing feeling like I want a relationship, I don't actually know why it is I want one, nor what I have to gain from one....

This may or may not be the case, as people's experiences rarely map neatly on top of each other, but usually when I perceive others as being too cool to associate with "the peasants", it's usually more of an insecurity on my side than an aura of elitism from the person in question. In my mind, the thought is "they're too cool to hang out with me", not "they think they're hot shit".

Sure all privately-owned cars are problematic, but I think it's ridiculous to suggest that small vehicles have the same impact as massive SUVs/trucks.

Bigger cars are not only more damaging in crashes with pedestrians/cyclists (which you've mentioned but seem to think is unimportant?!) but they also cause more accidents because of poor visibility and longer stopping distances. Also, environmentally-speaking, larger vehicles have a much bigger impact than small cars. Not only are they less fuel-efficient, they also cause more damage to roads leading to more frequent need for repairs.

I agree that ultimately reducing the total number of privately-owned vehicles should be the main goal, but we can also simultaneously strive for smaller cars for the vehicles that are on our roads.

I honestly low-key love it when someone in a car yells out "FAGGOT" when I'm walking down the street. I just give them the gayest little wave and yell back "hey girl!" with a huge smile. I enjoy the validation that I succeed in being visibly queer.

Of course, I live somewhere very safe and decently queer-friendly. I probably wouldn't enjoy it if I felt in danger, but it's typically a bunch of teenagers who are clearly in their edgy phase.

I am a victim of the network effect who wishes to degoogle. What do I do?

This post is going to be a bit personal (and maybe a little bit out of context, it's not just Google software I want to remove) but I'm tired of not knowing what to do about it. I want and have wanted to get rid of a bunch of proprietary software in my life, including but not limited to Google's software, for quite a while now,...

I'm relatively young, but my parents weren't always aware of my whereabouts when I was thirteen. Heck as young as 8 years old they let me bike the 5km to school. I think that trust and autonomy was good for me, especially as a preteen/teen.

Contrast with my younger brother, who our father still tracks via Snapchat in his early twenties. I can say the constant feeling of surveillance has definitely had an impact on his mental health.

Am I a coffee heathen?

So back when I was first living on my own. I of course had no money and I still needed coffee. So I just started doing what I would call cowboy coffee. Where the hot water and grounds are just combined. Then the grounds settle to the bottom. I have had a number of people find this quite uncouth and have tried to make me change....

I'm a pretty big coffee nerd, and work as a barista. I have no patience for snobbery. If someone wants to learn more about coffee, the effects of roasting, immersion, percolation, espresso, I'll gladly infodump to them and share the knowledge I've accrued over the years.

If someone is content with their venti soy mocha thing from Starbucks, or their double double from Timmies, or even store-brand instant coffee, and they don't feel the need to jump into the coffee world, that's fine by me. The idea that you must like a certain type of coffee to enjoy it "properly" is silly to me. I'm not yucking anyone's yum.

This is great news, it's frankly embarrassing that it took this long. I know here in New Brunswick, our Conservative government has done the absolute bare minimum to help out hungry kids, of which there are many (30 000 kids live in poverty in NB, and many more probably suffer from some degree of food insecurity.)

It's such a no-brainer to invest in this, like even if you're a heartless neoliberal ultra-capitalist who thinks the poor should suffer, do you not want your future-workforce-in-training to actually absorb their training? Hungry kids don't learn good.

I switched to Linux, got a new phone to install GrapheneOS on it, and started self-hosting a few things.

I haven't had this much fun with technology since I was a kid.

Do you need to download an anti-virus for Android?

So my workplace is mostly iPhone users and someone asked me what kind of antivirus software I used on my Android, and I said "none" and he flipped out about how unsafe it was. Other people chimed in saying how all androids need antivirus apps and I've never heard of such a thing. I do have ad-blockers and a VPN but never...

As long as you lock the bootloader, GrapheneOS operates the same as stock Android in this regard. If anything, you'd be safer on GrapheneOS because of the extra control you get over app permissions.

A bad trip on shrooms after years of frequenting trans spaces online "to learn more and be a good ally".

Two of my acquaintances had come out as non-binary the week before, and it took drugs for me to unpack why, despite me being extremely happy for them both, I felt a bit of resentment and jealousy.

I do all I can to avoid ads on my devices and networks.

However, I sometimes have to use devices I don't own. Or work-provided hardware I'm not permitted to install anything on. Or I can get exposed to ads if a friend shows me something on their phone, or if I'm in a classroom/work and someone wants to show a YouTube video as part of their presentation.

And even if I somehow managed to never get exposed to ads, it doesn't mean ads don't suck and I'm not allowed to complain about their existence. Additionally, sure uBlock, DNS, alternative front-ends and all other ad-blocking methods are simple enough for computer nerds on Lemmy, but the vast majority of people aren't computer nerds. If I told my friends to "just get uBlock and a DNS-level filter", half of them would look at me like an insane person. The vast majority of people who use computers have little to no understanding of how they work and can't do much more than Facebook, YouTube, and email.

I'm a barista, coffee houses were a relatively new thing in 1700. People from the Middle East and East Africa would probably understand "I make coffee", and maybe some very trendy Europeans as well (Wikipedia says the first coffee house in Europe opened in 1645 in Austria.)

If they weren't familiar with coffee, I'd say I make a beverage with the opposite properties of beer. It's hot and perks you up where beer is cold and dulls your senses.

(Random thought: how did beer refrigeration work pre-industrial revolution? Were our ancestors chugging lukewarm beer?)

Francophones are not prioritized for employment or political opportunities. Do you know which linguistic group is prioritized for such roles?

    Bilinguals.

Do you think a unilingual French speaker would have more opportunities in Canada than a unilingual English speaker?

Of course, people whose first language is French have much higher rates of bilingualism than people whose first language is English, for a myriad of reasons. But I find it illuminating that for all the whining I see from (some) Anglophones about "lack of opportunities because they don't speak French", their proposed solutions always focus on stripping Francophones of their rights instead of encouraging French language education for Anglophones. Many countries around the world have huge percentages of their population being able to speak two (or more!) languages, why shouldn't we strive for that? I see no downsides to increased bilingualism.

I live in New Brunswick, the only officially bilingual province in the Canada, where our unilingual Anglophone premier repeats the same talking points you do about how difficult it is for unilingual Anglophones to advance themselves in our province. All while holding the highest elected title in the province without speaking a lick of French.

I definitely only mention it when relevant (making meal plans) because people's brains just shut down as soon as they hear vegan. Constantly the most idiotic arguments that they'd never use in other contexts.

I need to eat meat because of my protein-deficient Indigenous lion-ancestors and did you know there's no ethical consumption under capitalism so might as well maximize my unethical behaviors, also did you know only 100 companies produce 71% of emissions and they'd totally keep up that production even if consumption went down on a global scale?? Also I only ever eat meat from my uncle's ethical farm, who somehow also provides the meat for every fast food restaurant I go to, I'm basically vegetarian I only eat meat like twice a day!

I've started telling people "I'd rather not have a conversation about it because I've had this conversation hundreds of times, it's never productive and I usually end up rather upset". If they can't respect that, I figure they're not worth my time anyways.

They're fully within their rights to restrict access to their content, just as everyone complaining is fully within their rights to not give up their email to access content.

I realize independent media financing is a huge struggle right now, and the quality of journalism has been in a downwards spiral for decades now. Clearly, the current system is unsustainable, I agree with 404media on that much. I wholeheartedly disagree with restricting access to information as a solution, as that seems completely opposed to what journalism should aim to achieve.

    Evkob ,
    @Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

We don't live in history anymore, we live in the present. Our relationship to information and journalism is not the same as it was in the past, for better and for worse.

In the past, a typical individual would have access to maybe a handful of news sources. You'd pay for the printing and delivery of a physical newspaper and that was going to be the extent of the journalism you were exposed to. I don't think it's realistic to think one should subscribe to every news source they're likely to encounter online. I'd also counter that radio journalism was one of the main sources of information in the 20th century and had no such paywalls.

That said, I'm most annoyed because no one is actually talking about Stract, just about how 404media decided to lock the article

You know how that could have been avoided? If the link actually contained any useful information about Stract instead of being a sign-up page :P

    Evkob ,
    @Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

I have this « job » that I’ve been stuck with forever now.

    How are you stuck?

Unless you're literally a slave (which I doubt), the only way one could be "stuck" in a job is because we live in a capitalist society where you need employment to survive. I had a miserable job a few months ago, to the point where suicidal thoughts I hadn't had in a while crept back up. I just quit. Even if that meant uncertainty with regards to housing/groceries (I still haven't found a job and not going to lie, shit's a bit rough right now).

If you're thinking of killing yourself anyway, why not quit? Why not drastically change your life? What have you got to lose? Surely not your will to live. Either you're going to be miserable (which it sounds like you're already there) or maybe things will eventually get better. Either way, you're not going to get much lower morale than being suicidal.

Best of luck to you, I hope you figure out a way to see yourself out of this. For what it's worth, this internet stranger believes in you. Hope to see you tomorrow.

I started using RSS during the summer. It filled a hole after I quit reddit, since I used to get a lot of my news from the subreddits for my city and my province. There's also the on-going bickering between Meta and Canadian lawmakers/news media groups which means I see way less articles on social media than I used to. Honestly, after adding a couple local news outlets to my RSS apps, I feel better informed than ever before, and I spend a lot less time arguing with people on reddit. Win-win if you ask me.

Anyone looking for good RSS readers, I use Feeder on my phone (Android-only), Fluent Reader on desktop (cross-platform), and I also use the RSS widget of the Renewed Tab addon for Firefox. Both apps I use work locally, and have the ability to fetch full articles in-app (the addon just opens the articles in Firefox).

Something also worth mentioning: you can often find RSS feeds by checking the page's source (on Firefox: right-click and "View Page Source") and using Ctrl+F to search, there's usually a URL somewhere. Keywords to search for: "feed", "RSS", "xml", "atom". For example, if I go to this community's page on lemmy.world, I can Ctrl+F "feed" on the page source to find https://lemmy.world/feeds/c/technology.xml

I love old folk songs, this tune is actually kind of a mashup of two songs, it's the lyrics from Matty Grove (which dates back to the 17th century!) and the melody of Shady Grove, a traditional Appalachian folk song.
