"dedicating the equivalent of 34,000 full-time engineers to what has become the single largest cybersecurity engineering project in the history of digital technology,"

What does this mean? Are they having it done by 50,000 part timers? Or are they just asking bing chat to churn out security solutions for them?

Hey! Welcome to beehaw! It is a smaller instance than kbin, but it's more selective with who is a member so there are pros and cons if you vibe with those that are here I suppose. I also have subscribed to a bunch of communities from lemmy.ca and most of them also say subscription pending, but I still get the posts from those places in my feed so it seems to be working? Idk I would chalk that up to a little jank.

What I did here was just subscribed to all of the communities so that I don't miss out and my feed doesn't stagnate. Idk if that would work for you. It's difficult to make a suggestion for someone looking for "friends and fun" since we don't really know much about what you'd find fun or what kind of friends you are looking for. Hopefully as you make posts and replies you will find your people here!

Fully autonomous self driving cars just aren't ready. They probably never will be unless you give them a dedicated lane and grade separate it. But we already have that, it's called Skytrain.

The way forward is a properly funded transit system not a techbro feverdream.

This is where in a sane world independent journalists would see allegations like these and properly investigate and bring us the truth of the matter. But we don't live in a world where that happens often anymore.

While I think it's funny that the tough on crime crowd is rallying behind a convicted felon it's important to remember that sometimes there ARE people who have been politically suppressed. Eugene Debs ran in 1920 for the socialist party. He'd been convicted for speaking out against WW1 at the time. He didn't win, but he did run.

What I hope is that Trump just doesn't win. His support goes way beyond simple constitutional rights or freedom of speech. These GOP voters are not REALLY saying convicted felons should be allowed to become president. They are saying TRUMP should be allowed to become president. It's populist, slightly cultish, and entirely frightening. Due process means nothing, personality and whatever they personally view as "strength" are what matters to them.

Their morals didn't really change though did they? :( They've always been what they are. It's just that the words that come out of their mouths don't line up with how they act or what they believe, or even reality, a lot of the time.

There was a vote that happened in my youth where two parties ended up with (Edit: NEARLY) identical amounts of votes in the house. In my voting district there was an independent running who was fairly popular with the city and we voted him in. The end result was that during legislation there was some vote where the yes/no vote was split perfectly even between the two major parties and our little independent became the deciding factor Edit: My memory was faulty. He forced it into a tie with his vote and the speaker of the house had to be the tie breaker. But the point still stands that his one vote had a pretty large implication.

This is a very niche and unlikely scenario (it did happen though, look up Chuck Cadman) but it was a very clear indication to me that yes, voting does matter. And every one single vote DOES count and make a difference.

The Media Still Doesn’t Grasp the Danger of Trump ( theintercept.com )

Just like Hitler before him, Trump is benefiting from the fact that journalism is an incremental, daily business. Every day, reporters have to find something new to write or broadcast. Trump keeps saying dangerous and crazy things, but that’s not new. He’s said it all before. His impeachments and the January 6 insurrection...

Yes Louis Brennan designed a gyroscopic monorail in the early 1900's but there's a reason it didn't work out. Every car needs its own gyroscope which is a lot of dynamic components that need maintenance. A regular two rail train is much simpler and cheaper to operate. The idea these techbros have that everything is made better with individual pods is pretty wasteful when we already have better and cheaper solutions to virtually every problem they have tried to invent for us. Are we even super concerned about rural folks taking transit? By definition they are a small portion of the population and have the greatest need for personal transport. Where we need transit adoption is in urban areas with large populations who all want to drive their personal 2 tonnes of plastic and steel right into town and park it (for free obviously) in their own little parking space.

A gadgetbahn like this will only serve a limited population and won't be able to tie into the existing transit network. There might be niche situations where it's not a terrible idea but it is not a good generalized solution.

I hope there's enough of a market for non-ai content that it doesn't come to that. I think we already reached the pushback stage with image generation.

Looking for self hosted digital asset management

I'm looking to be able to store assets that I've created and purchased (both 3d models and images, potentially audio in the future) on my nas and would love to be able to use something to browse them and filter or sort them based on what kind of usage license I have for them. So if I'm doing a commission I can filter out the...

That looks cool for 3d models but it doesn't look like it supports 2d images as well? If I have to use a different program for 3d and 2d assets then I will def be looking at Manyfold/VanDAM

Butterbee OP ,

That looks cool! But my folder is already 18gb and is well over the 10gb of free storage they offer. Also self hosting is out of my price range for them.

Oh you know what I might have clicked on the on premise supported version and saw the price of $695 per month and noped out lol, thanks I'll take a closer look. I see the git repository now.

idk about styles but there are certainly different ways of gardening. There's hydroponic gardening, gardening in containers, having plots out in the yard...

Lazy beginner options could be to go for succulents in containers next to a window, or maybe picking up some herbs that you can grow in pots from the garden store.

I'm still not 100% sure we won't get another frost so I've planted some spring onions knowing that there's a chance they will not make it. I plan to put some marigolds with them this year, and then to put some decorative plants behind them in the harder to reach area of the plot.

Ok so first, my biases. I'm going to write my best guess and then I'll read the article. So.. is it that Portugal helped people instead of simply trying to arrest them or put up anti-homeless architecture so that those better off wouldn't have to see addicts in the streets? Let's go and read now...

WELL. I'm shocked!

"Portugal's leaders responded by pivoting away from the U.S. drug war model, which prioritized narcotics seizures, arrests and lengthy prison sentences for drug offenders.

Instead, Portugal focused scarce public dollars on health care, drug treatment, job training and housing. The system, integrated into the country's taxpayer-funded national health care system, is free and relatively easy to navigate. "

Ok, I'm not that shocked.

Butterbee ,

That's true but it literally doesn't matter what you do the Trumpists will cry foul regardless and facts and reason don't apply to them. I'm just glad the US still has people in positions of power that are willing to go against Trump and actually follow their rule of law. I'm also not American, but as a Canadian I feel dangerously close to what goes on just south of the border and we have our own cadre of ultra right-wingers who are trying to upset Canadian ways in the model of what Trump does. So I'm glad there are judgements against him when warranted even if he'll never pay up and even if the amount he's penalized is a pittance to what he should be penalized and even if his followers cry about it.

"Is there something you don’t understand about dating and want to share your frustration?"

Literally all of it. I do not date full stop. I haven't gone on a date in over a decade, and before that experience it had been another decade. It's almost certainly never going to happen again. I don't understand anything at all about dating. How do you meet people? How do you enjoy time with them? What is even going on?

Butterbee ,
@Butterbee@beehaw.org avatar

It's more to vent than anything! Though I have read the responses so far and I do want to understand how it works for others. Realistically, my questions and uncertainties are something that would take many conversations with a therapist for me to understand how to navigate so I don't expect to learn much aside from curiosity here. I think I would like to find a partner that I'm compatible with perhaps.. but I am not ready and may never be. The dynamics TERRIFY me. Absolutely TERRIFY me.

If it were anyone but Musk's company I might be excited at the prospects of this tech.

Butterbee ,
@Butterbee@beehaw.org avatar

Good rule for life.. NEVER let someone cut you open unless it will save your life or drastically improve it. I was thinking along the lines of quadriplegics regaining autonomy than just futurisms. I could get excited about something that gives people their lives back. Would that ever come out of a company run by Musk? I highly doubt it. But if it weren't him or other tech bros there could be a chance that it could turn into something that helps people.

It's hard to come up with ideas without any context, ESPECIALLY nitty gritty. So instead I'll try to start with a few frameworks that could be built upon. Maybe my ideas are bad. Maybe they are interesting. Everyone can judge for themselves. But I'm going for framework and inspiration here of how to start. I hope someone finds it interesting enough to take a thread and run with it.

You could have a magic system that's based around breaking current physics which might feel grounded (like you know internally that a magic alters quantum wave functions and influences physical outcomes as a result for instance, or just stick with the good ol' air earth water fire that people are already familiar with and will understand immediately). That would put limits on what your magic could or couldn't do and make it feel plausible or at least consistent. It would also be easier to set a power level to since it's already by nature restricted.

You could also choose more narrative inspired system which might be less cohesive but allow for bigger moments with your characters. Just imagine a cinematic moment. Your protagonist is on their last legs. The BBEG has hordes of minions overrunning the towns and cities. One of the protagonists friends embraces them and as tears fall the BBEG prepares to annihilate them. Call back to a scene where you foreshadow this moment and as the protag remembers that scene they find within themselves the strength repel the BBEG. Or maybe they can teleport away with their friend, or maybe they sacrifice themselves to destroy the BBEG in a metaphysical explosion. The specifics of that would be yours to craft but the moment you design would inform the 'magic' required. To make a system like this I would imagine a few different impactful moments that would be super fun to have in the story and their magical effects. Make these just about the top end of what magic can do in your world and then start scaling down to a more reasonable level. And now start thinking about how people would use the scaled down stuff in their day to day lives.

It might be interesting to allow for the balancing and OP-ness of the system to be restricted by sacrifice to the characters. Maybe there's no real limit to magic aside from how much of yourself you're willing to give up. Perhaps giving your entire body and soul could cause a magical effect of a certain power level. Maybe if two people cast it together, sacrificing both of themselves it would be more. The good side could quickly go down a dark path trying to out muscle the BBEG.

You could also go the route of taking inspiration from RPG systems like Shadowrun, Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu. I'm definitely NOT saying copy those systems, but you could take from DND the concept of doing a ritual each day to be able to have access to certain stuff. Or maybe you like the idea of casting spells taking a physical toll on the caster as it does in Shadowrun. Or maybe accessing the arcane drives one made like in CoC.

So sorry I don't think I can get into nitty gritty details but hopefully something in this sparks some inspiration. And if not, at least it can rule some stuff out!

Winter Wonders (3D) - by me ( photos.smugmug.com )

My latest completed project in Blender. We haven't had any snow here yet so I figured I'd make some digital snow instead. It's been a while since I made a snowy scene so it was nice to get back into that again. Also gave me the chance to learn and practice some new terrain tools I got and had been meaning to take for a spin....
