A supermarket trip may soon look different, thanks to electronic shelf labels ( www.npr.org )

Grocery store prices are changing faster than ever before — literally. This month, Walmart became the latest retailer to announce it’s replacing the price stickers in its aisles with electronic shelf labels. The new labels allow employees to change prices as often as every ten seconds....

China Changes Hundreds of Uyghur Village Names as Part of Broader Government Effort to Erase Uyghur Culture in Xinjiang ( www.hrw.org )

Chinese authorities in Xinjiang have been systematically changing hundreds of village names with religious, historical, or cultural meaning for Uyghurs into names reflecting recent Chinese Communist Party ideology, Human Rights Watch said....

Taranum, who only has one name and guesses her age at 34, sleeps here with her three daughters. She was recently diagnosed with typhoid, an illnessmore prevalent during heatwaves when water contaminates more easily. She said at the peak of her illness, she felt like she would die. She’s terrified at the thought.

“I can’t die,” she says. “We are homeless. Who will take care of my daughters?” She shakes her head: “But I can’t complain. Other people have it harder. Two babies died in this heat.”

Absolutely grim. Homeless single mothers stricken with typhoid that say "I can't complain because others have it worse." Remind me again, why are billionaires allowed to exist in a world where this happens?

i gotta say, this AutoTL:DR seems kind of...bad. "she tells NPR" is a pronoun attached to person that is not named elsewhere in the TLDR. Maybe Beehaw should look into banning this one? I'm not sure how to offer feedback to the bot's author.

theangriestbird OP ,
@theangriestbird@beehaw.org avatar

i bring it up because there was a discussion at some point about whether beehaw as a whole should allow bots. I think the agreement was that some users still find them helpful. I'm just questioning if that is still the case, as the summary doesn't strike me as particularly useful. But if others disagree, then i have no beef with it.

Great explainer about the changes, and reasons why it actually behooves Google to continue to allow ad blockers in some form. All that said...this still reaffirms my decision to go Firefox, always and forever, to get the most complete privacy options.

thank you for bringing the alt perspective.

What app are you using to browse Beehaw on Android?

I've been using Sync for a while, but it repeatedly hits an error when I try to submit posts to Beehaw. I have not tried other instances, but I am assuming this issue is specific to Sync. Getting really sick of drafting posts and then having to discard them because the app errors out 🤦

theangriestbird OP ,
@theangriestbird@beehaw.org avatar

interesting you say that, bc i think i'm gonna do the reverse. Sync for browse and Connect for post. Maybe your way is smarter, but i paid for the premium sync so idk. sunk cost fallacy or something lol

"Weaponized Pedantry" should be this Supreme Court's motto. They should get it embroidered on the backs of their robes in Latin.

Alex Jones faces day of reckoning over what he owes Sandy Hook families ( www.npr.org )

It’s a day of reckoning today for Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and a long-awaited culmination for the Sandy Hook families who sued Jones for defamation. Anyone know why this thread shows 6 comments but I can only see the one from Butterbee? Is everyone else defederated from Beehaw or something?

@boolean: my sense is that a decent chunk of bees here are former reddit lurkers looking for things to like or comment on. If you came here from reddit or something similar, i get that it feels a little quiet bc there are just fewer people posting, and you might be used to just scrolling and passively reading and maybe commenting once or twice a day. Beehaw is smaller, so it's a place that NEEDS more posts and comments. On reddit maybe you felt like posting was pointless bc it would go into the void, or someone else already posted or said the thing you wanted to say. Here that is not the case. Please, contribute! I came back this week after some time away, and I've been trying to post bunches to drive discussion. One thing i've noticed is that every post gets some kind of engagement - people are HUNGRY for more to do and talk about here. Personally, it makes me feel more connected to this community than i ever did over my years on reddit. Post whatever in the community that's most appropriate. Everyone here is chill and kind. If a post crosses a line for some reason, people will let you know in the kindest way possible, then you say sorry and it's all cool.

That's a good hot take. Here's another one: maybe the entire Supreme Court should be changed every year or two, with the bench randomly selected from the entire panel of federal judges that meet a certain minimum experience requirement. Hypothetically that should do something for these outrageous bribes and corruption.

Why does the title focus on 3D pipes specifically?

The developer kicked off a screen saver contest among the Windows OpenGL team, with 3D Pipes being one of the entries alongside 3D Maze, 3D Text, and 3D Flying Objects. The team was supposed to vote for a single winner to be included with Windows NT 3.5, but when a person on Microsoft’s marketing team saw them, he said, “You can call off the vote. We’re adding all of them to the product!”

I feel like I hear about 3D Maze way more when people are reminiscing about old screensavers. Just sorta weird titling

Sorry I should have added: I always thought that nuclear had way higher output capacity than other energy options. But I think it's clear that that is no longer the case, if it ever was.

i feel fortunate to have both of my parents still with me. Not sure how far out you are from that loss, but my understanding is that it's a grief that never leaves you. My best friend lost their dad 5 years ago, and they STILL have enough feelings about it to fill an entire poetry book (after previously filling a separate poetry book in the 2 years immediately after).

you're still allowed to be sad about it and have a hard week about it, no matter how long ago it happened <3
